Review of Yidio
Yidio is a free movie streaming platform with a concept similar to that of many pirate streaming sites. Rather than hosting most content, Yidio simply links to it, aggregating free and legal movies and TV shows that you can view via the app or your browser.
If you’re accustomed to websites like YesMovies and 123Movies, you’re also likely accustomed to free meaning piracy. Yidio is a website that works around this while offering a large library of free movies for you to watch.
If you’re considering using Yidio, there’s a lot you should know. For example, not all of the movies are free and many link out to Google Play and iTunes, where you will be expected to pay a rental fee. Most also don’t play in the app; instead, you’ll have to follow a link to the source content where you will watch it on Viewster, Crunchyroll, or another similar platform. The site works as an aggregation service, pulling (legal) free and premium content together from across the web.
How Does It Work?
Yidio offers a small selection of their own content, which is generally available free of charge. The site also works as a content aggregator, pulling movies and media from across the web from free streaming sites like Viewster and Crackle as well as premium ones like Hulu and Amazon Prime.
As a normal user, you can log in and view any free content but not the content pulled from premium sites. If you have the subscriptions from premium sites, you can view those offerings right from the website as well.
While Yidio does not have a very large library of free content, the service provides a simple and legal way to move all of your media subscriptions (free and premium) onto one channel, while giving you access to additional free content from sites you might not have found or bothered to look at on your own.
You can also view recent TV show releases (from websites that stream their content online after airing). With a total aggregate library of 1 million + TV shows, movies, and documentaries, Yidio has one of the largest streaming video libraries out there.
Are all of the Movies Free?
Unfortunately, if you’re looking for free movies and TV to stream online, Yidio can make that difficult. While you can select to filter for “Free” movies or TV shows, many choices in the “Free” filter are primarily available for rent – which can be significantly more costly than just paying for a Netflix subscription.
However, you can sort by the cheapest option to watch – and you can see which movies are free or have a free link just by clicking on them.
Yidio’s interface allows you to filter movies and TV based on filters such as Netflix, Free, trending, or most popular as well as a live schedule. From there, you can sort by over 40 genres and search by name, title, or other details. You can see reviews from IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, including scores and actual user reviews, and add items to a watch list for later viewing.
Overall, the interface is fast and easy to use, but doesn’t really hold up when compared to interfaces like Netflix or Amazon Prime, where you can filter and search with more variables, favorite and star items to watch later, and synchronize across devices.
Yidio’s biggest interface flaw is that most of the films and shows are not hosted locally. Instead, you’ll be linked out to another website or browser tab. On the app, this gets even more annoying as you will sometimes be forced to install additional apps just to open a link.
What About Viewing Quality?
Yidio primarily offers medium quality films and movies, usually right around DVD quality. While you will see HD and even 4K films, these are always premium and typically only available through subscription sites like Netflix or for rent through Amazon or Google. This can be a disadvantage if you’re looking for high quality films, but when we consider that they are free, we can’t actually complain too much.
Yidio also offers significantly better quality than alternatives like Viewster – so that is an advantage as well.
If you’re not a fan of advertisements, you probably don’t want to use Yidio. While free, the site supports itself with a massive number of ads, including potentially risky “download” button ads which can link you to software and apps that you really don’t want installed on your computer. Every movie also includes frequent ads, so you will have to pause your viewing experience quite a bit.
The ads are annoying and you wouldn’t want to click on most of them without an antivirus program installed – but most are fairly harmless. You could also use Adblock – but if everyone blocks ads, Yidio will stop making money and will eventually shut down.
What Else Should You Know?
Yidio allows you to sort videos by “Free” but the filter isn’t always accurate. Sometimes this happens when a free source vanishes or becomes premium – but many of the movies and shows listed in the free section only link out to premium or rental options. Therefore, you actually have to click on a film to see if you can really watch it for free, which is a hassle but not a big one.
Yidio’s biggest advantage is that it offers an easy way to search through over a million TV shows and movies on one app or website. This can make it significantly easier to find free content to watch from dozens of other websites. You can also search on premium sites if you have subscriptions for them and Yidio will point out the cheapest option. It’s also nice to see Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB ratings in one place, which can give you a better idea of what you’re looking for.
How to Watch a Movie on Yidio
Yidio makes it relatively easy to find and view a movie, but it’s important to remember that not all movies are on the platform. Instead, you’ll click on the movie or show, see the Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB scores, and then see a selection of viewing links. If you’re using the app, these links will open up in-app or in browser or third-party app (like Netflix) and if you’re using the browser version of the platform, it will open in a new browser window.
Is it Legal?
Yidio does aggregate all of its content from third-party sites, but all of the sites we’ve checked have been licensed and legal. That means you can use Yidio to search for free content without worrying about accidentally illegally streaming.
The Final Verdict
Overall, Yidio offers an excellent service, making it easy to find and search free and premium movies through one platform. However, with poor differentiation between movies you have to rent or pay for through a subscription and completely free films, the service can be a little frustrating if you don’t want to spend the time checking to ensure it’s free.
Most free movie and TV show quality is high quality (though not HD) or about DVD level, and is better than many other sites – which is a huge perk if you’re using the app to watch the show on your TV.
Yidio can be a great service, but it does come with hang ups, and you should be aware of them before you start using it. If you don’t mind the ads or the links, there’s no reason why you won’t love it.
