One quiet feature deserves an early mention. Everlink is an auto-recovery layer that reconnects the tunnel when your network changes, and in use it does its job invisibly. Moving a laptop from ethernet to Wi-Fi produced no visible interruption and no dropped connection, which is the sort of thing you only notice when it is missing.
CleanWeb ad, tracker and malware blocking
CleanWeb is the built-in blocker, and it works at the DNS level rather than as a browser extension. That means it applies to every app on the device, not just the pages you open in Chrome. Because the filtering happens before a request leaves the device, ad and tracker domains are refused for apps and smart TV software as well as browsers, and a blocked request is one your connection never has to download.
It is not a replacement for a dedicated content blocker if you are fussy about filter lists, and it does not catch everything a mature browser extension will. MultiHop and Dynamic MultiHop
MultiHop routes your connection through two servers in different countries instead of one. Your traffic leaves your device, exits at the first server, hops to the second, and only then reaches the open internet. Anyone watching the exit point sees the second country, and anyone watching your local connection sees only the first.
Surfshark ships a list of pre-built MultiHop pairs, and Dynamic MultiHop lets you build your own combination of entry and exit country. That flexibility is genuinely useful. The cost is speed. Two hops means two sets of encryption and two legs of physical distance, so a MultiHop route is meaningfully slower than a single hop to the same exit country. Use it when the threat model justifies it, not as your default.
Alternative ID and IP Rotator
Alternative ID is the feature that surprised us most, because it has nothing to do with tunnelling traffic. It generates a complete stand-in persona: a name, a date of birth, an address and a working forwarding email. You use that email when a site demands one, and messages forward to your real inbox without the site ever holding your real address.
For newsletter sign-ups, store loyalty schemes and anything that asks for personal information it has no business holding, it is a good tool. It does not make you anonymous, and you should not use it where a real identity is legally required. As a way to stop your primary email address ending up in fifty marketing databases, it works.
IP Rotator changes your IP address periodically while keeping you connected to the same country. The point is to make it harder to track a browsing session as one continuous identity. It is a niche feature and it can occasionally confuse sites that expect a stable address, so treat it as situational.
Kill switch, NoBorders and Camouflage Mode
The kill switch is the feature that matters most and gets discussed least. If the VPN connection drops, it cuts your internet rather than letting traffic fall back to your ordinary connection unprotected. We forced disconnects repeatedly, and every single time all traffic stopped dead. There was no leak window and no brief moment of exposure.
NoBorders detects restrictive networks and quietly switches to server and protocol combinations that are harder to filter. It turns itself on when it is needed rather than asking you to know in advance that a network is restricted, which is the right design for a feature most people would never enable manually.
Camouflage Mode, sometimes called obfuscation, disguises VPN traffic so it looks like ordinary encrypted browsing. Networks that block VPNs typically detect them by traffic shape rather than by address, and Camouflage defeats that detection. It costs surprisingly little: P2P transfer speeds ran only about 5% slower with Camouflage Mode enabled, which is well inside the range where you would not notice.
Dedicated IP and Smart DNS
A dedicated IP is an address used by you alone, bought as an add-on. The usual reasons are business network allowlists, bank access and avoiding the shared-IP reputation problems that come with hundreds of people using the same exit address.
There is a counterintuitive wrinkle. A dedicated IP can trigger more CAPTCHA challenges rather than fewer, because an address with a single consistent user on a data-centre range sometimes looks more anomalous to a fraud system than a busy shared one. If your reason for buying it is to stop being asked to identify traffic lights, test it inside the refund window first.
Smart DNS handles devices that cannot run VPN software, such as older smart TVs and games consoles. It changes your DNS resolution to unlock geo-restricted content without encrypting your traffic, which means it is a content tool rather than a privacy tool. Surfshark's own materials still describe Smart DNS, though its status has been questioned recently, so confirm it is available before you buy specifically for it.

Speed and privacy both depend on what the network underneath looks like. Surfshark runs 4,500+ servers across 100 countries, and the published server list breaks that down by city. In the United States there are servers in 19 US states, which matters if you need a specific regional broadcast feed rather than just an American address.
Raw server count is the least useful number in this industry. What matters is whether there is capacity near you and in the places you actually connect to, and on both counts the network held up. Our fastest results came from North American and European locations, which is where most readers will spend their time.

Virtual server locations are used for hard-to-reach regions, where the address is registered to one country while the hardware physically sits somewhere nearby with better infrastructure. Surfshark labels these as virtual in the app rather than hiding them, which is the honest approach. It matters because a virtual location gives you the IP address of a country but not the low latency of actually being routed there.
The whole fleet runs on RAM-only servers. Nothing is written to a disk, so a power cycle wipes the machine completely. This is now table stakes for a serious service, but it is worth confirming rather than assuming.
Privacy and logging: does Surfshark keep logs?
This is the question that decides whether a VPN is worth buying at all, because a service that records what you do has simply moved your browsing history from your internet provider to a company you know less about.
Surfshark's privacy policy states that it does not record browsing history, traffic destinations, session information, bandwidth usage or the IP addresses you visit. That is the standard claim, and on its own it is worth exactly as much as the audit behind it.
There is one nuance worth being clear about, because it is the detail marketing tends to skate over. Your IP address is held during an active session as an abuse-prevention measure, and it is deleted within 15 minutes of you disconnecting. That is not activity logging and it does not link you to what you did online, but it is not the same as the absolute "we never see your IP" reading some copy invites. We would rather have the honest version, and 15 minutes is a short window by any standard.
Jurisdiction and ownership
Surfshark is based in the Netherlands, a country with no mandatory data-retention obligation for VPN providers. That is a meaningfully better position than a jurisdiction that compels retention, because a company cannot hand over records it was never required to create.
The Netherlands does participate in international intelligence-sharing arrangements, which some privacy advocates treat as disqualifying. Our view is more practical: an intelligence-sharing agreement can compel disclosure of data that exists, and the audited absence of that data is what actually protects you. The jurisdiction question matters less than the logging question.
On corporate ownership, the picture has been reported widely enough that you have probably read about it, but Surfshark's own trust materials did not confirm the specifics when we checked. We are not going to state a corporate structure we could not verify at source. If ownership is central to your decision, ask support directly and get the answer in writing.
Independent audits and the warrant canary
Claims are cheap and audits are not. Surfshark commissioned an independent no-logs audit by Deloitte, published on January 25, 2023, which examined server configuration, deployment processes, API infrastructure and the software-defined network rather than just reading the policy document.
That audit is one entry in a longer record. The Trust Center lists Deloitte no-logs audits in 2023 and 2025, Cure53 infrastructure assessments in 2018, 2021 and 2026, and a SecuRing assessment in 2025. A repeated pattern of external review across seven years is far more persuasive than one certificate, because it shows the practice survived changes of staff, scale and infrastructure.
The Trust Center also carries a transparency report on legal and data requests, updated quarterly. Being able to see the volume of requests received, and what was handed over, is the closest thing to a live check on a no-logs claim that a customer gets.
A warrant canary is a related device: a regularly updated statement confirming that no secret order has been received, which stops being updated if one arrives. Surfshark has been credited with maintaining one, but we could not see a current canary on the Trust Center page when we looked. If a live canary is a requirement for you, verify its present status yourself before buying rather than taking any review's word for it.
The Netherlands imposes no data-retention mandate, and the no-logs policy has now been examined by an outside auditor twice. Neither fact is a guarantee on its own. Together with a quarterly transparency report, they add up to one of the better-evidenced privacy positions in the consumer market.
Security: encryption, protocols and leak tests
Encryption is AES-256 on OpenVPN and IKEv2, and ChaCha20 on WireGuard. Both are current, both are used by governments and banks, and neither is the weak link in any realistic attack on you. The interesting questions in 2026 are about protocol choice and implementation.
Surfshark added post-quantum encryption to its WireGuard connections in early 2026. The threat it addresses is "harvest now, decrypt later", where traffic captured today is stored until a future quantum computer can break it. That is a long-horizon concern rather than a present danger, but adding it now is the right call and it costs you nothing.

Supported VPN protocols
You get three protocol options, and the app defaults to picking one automatically. That default is the right choice for almost everyone, but knowing what each protocol does helps when something misbehaves.

WireGuard is where the speed comes from. Its codebase is small enough to audit properly and it reconnects quickly, which is why it is the default nearly everywhere now. IKEv2 handles handovers between mobile data and Wi-Fi gracefully, which makes it a sensible pick on a phone.
If a site or service refuses to work, changing protocol is the first thing to try before changing servers. It resolves more problems than people expect.
DNS and WebRTC leak test results
A VPN that leaks is worse than no VPN, because it gives you confidence you have not earned. There are three common leaks: your real IP address escaping the tunnel, DNS queries going to your internet provider instead of the VPN's resolver, and WebRTC in the browser exposing your local address to a webpage.
We tested for all three across ten servers in different countries, and found nothing. No IP leaks, no DNS leaks, no WebRTC leaks, on every server we checked. Surfshark runs its own private DNS on every server rather than handing queries off to a third party, which is the structural reason the DNS results were clean.
The kill switch results were equally clean. On every forced disconnect, all traffic was cut immediately, with no window where packets escaped unprotected. Between the leak results and the kill switch behaviour, this is the part of the service we would trust without hesitation.
Speed and performance: our test results
Speed is where the marketing and the measurements usually part company, so this section is all numbers. The short version is that Surfshark is fast where you will use it and merely acceptable where you probably will not.
Across the network, download retention ranged from 64% to 95% of base speed on servers in other countries. That is a wide band, and the position within it is almost entirely a function of distance. There is no single honest headline figure, which is why we are giving you the range instead of one flattering number.
Nearby server speeds
On nearby servers over WireGuard, Surfshark held about 90% of base download speed. In practical terms that is invisible. Video streams at the same quality, large downloads finish at roughly the same time, and web pages load without a perceptible delay.
The top figures we recorded were 752 Mbps on a Seattle server, 653 Mbps in Los Angeles, 637 Mbps in New York and 556 Mbps in the UK. Those numbers are far beyond what any streaming service or video call needs, which is the point: the headroom means the VPN stops being a factor in your day.

Latency on nearby servers ran between 4ms and 10ms, which is low enough for voice calls and online gaming on a local region. One inconsistency is worth flagging: Windows connections sometimes showed a large latency spike even when the download hit was modest. Reconnecting cleared it, but it is a reminder to check ping rather than assuming a fast download means a responsive connection.
Long-distance server speeds and latency
Distance is where the picture changes. On long-distance links we measured 198 Mbps to Australia and 606 Mbps to Japan. The Japanese result is excellent and the Australian one is still comfortably enough for 4K video, so downloads hold up better than you would guess.
Latency does not. Ping climbed to about 225ms on Singapore from a European connection, and at that level gaming on a distant region stops being enjoyable. The download speed is fine, the responsiveness is not, and no VPN can fix the speed of light. Connect to the region you want to play in, or accept that you are not playing competitively.
Uploads are the genuine weak spot. Upload retention falls hard over long distance, dropping to somewhere around 11% to 18% on trans-Pacific routes. Upload results swing widely with the route and the local connection, so long-distance upload speed is the least predictable part of the picture. The practical consequence is that video calls over those routes can struggle even while downloads stay fast, because a call needs upstream bandwidth as much as it needs downstream.
If you regularly join video calls or upload large files across an ocean, test that specific route inside the 30-day window. Long-distance upload performance is the one area where Surfshark's results were consistently disappointing.
Streaming: Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer
Streaming is the reason a large share of buyers pay for a VPN at all, and Surfshark is good at it. We reached 16+ Netflix libraries alongside BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video, and more than 30 streaming platforms played successfully in HD or 4K.
BBC iPlayer is usually the hardest of the mainstream services to reach, and it played across all four UK locations we tried with no buffering. That consistency is what separates a service you can rely on from one that works on a good day. Streaming on four devices at once also ran without any noticeable slowdown, which is exactly the scenario an unlimited-device plan is sold for.

It is not flawless. A "proxy detected" error still turns up occasionally, and the fix is to switch to another server in the same country, which clears it in a few seconds. A handful of services only cooperate after changing server, switching protocol or moving to a static IP. None of that is unusual for a VPN in 2026, and Surfshark recovers from it faster than most because there is enough server choice in each country to have alternatives.
Torrenting and P2P support
Streaming is not the only thing that network capacity buys you. P2P traffic is allowed, and the network is built for it. RAM-only servers, an audited no-logs position and a kill switch that reliably cuts traffic are the three things that matter for torrenting, and Surfshark has all three.
Camouflage Mode is the piece that makes it practical on networks that throttle or block P2P. The cost is small: transfers ran only about 5% slower with it enabled, which is a trivial price for traffic that no longer looks like torrenting to the network in between.
The annoyance is discovery. P2P-friendly servers are not clearly labelled in the app, so finding a good one takes some trial and error. You end up connecting, testing and moving on until you land somewhere that performs, and it is a needless friction point on a service that is otherwise well organised.
Before you start a large transfer, confirm the kill switch is enabled and pick a nearby server rather than a distant one. A distant exit adds latency and costs you throughput without giving you anything back.
Apps and ease of use across devices
Surfshark's apps are user-friendly in the ordinary sense of the word: you open one, press a big button, and you are connected. Setup on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android took under five minutes from starting the download to the first connection, on every platform we installed it on.
The layout is consistent across platforms, which is worth more than it sounds when a plan covers a whole household. Someone who learns the app on their phone can use the one on the family laptop without relearning anything.
Windows and macOS
The desktop apps are the fullest expression of the service. Windows gets everything, including Bypasser split tunneling, the full protocol picker, CleanWeb and the kill switch, laid out in a sidebar that does not require hunting.
macOS is close behind, with one regression we noticed. The macOS app no longer shows server load and ping while you are connected, so checking either means disconnecting first. That is a small thing that becomes irritating quickly, because the moment you most want to know a server's load is when the one you are on feels slow.
Stability was good throughout. It is worth knowing that an update in the 5.13 series was reported to cause system crashes on Windows, and later builds resolved it. We saw nothing like it on current versions, and it is a reason to keep the app updated rather than a reason to avoid it.
