Most sites and the big social platforms load normally in Burkina Faso day to day. The exceptions are sharp, though. Mobile internet was cut nationwide in November 2021 and twice in January 2022, and Facebook was restricted. Since then, the media regulator has blocked a string of foreign news sites.
With traffic that often routes through Europe and hotel Wi-Fi shared by everyone on site, a VPN earns its place. We compared five VPNs on privacy, obfuscation and server reach. Our top pick is NordVPN, the only one with a Burkina Faso location.

The best VPNs for Burkina Faso, ranked
All five have audited no-logs policies and a kill switch. The speed results below come from our full reviews, not from tests run inside Burkina Faso.
1. NordVPN: best overall VPN for Burkina Faso
NordVPN scores 9.0 in our NordVPN review and leads because it is the only pick with a Burkina Faso option. Its Ouagadougou location is virtual, so the servers sit outside the country but hand you a Burkinabé IP. Virtual Ghana, Senegal and Benin locations and hundreds of French servers fill in nearby.
On nearby NordLynx servers, download-speed loss averaged around 5 percent in our testing. When we switched to the Obfuscated Servers category, which now runs on NordWhisper, the disguise cost a little speed but needed no extra setup. Support answered promptly, with accurate replies from human agents.
Six independent no-logs assessments back the privacy claims, the latest by Deloitte in 2025. Basic covers 10 devices for about $3.49 a month on the 2-year plan or $12.99 monthly, and the promo price moves with sales and currency. The price climbs sharply after the promo term, and on mobile, picking a city hides behind an easy-to-miss three-dot menu.
2. Proton VPN: best free plan for Burkina Faso
Proton VPN ties NordVPN at 9.0 in our Proton VPN review, and its free tier is the only one here worth using. It has no data cap, no ads and the Stealth protocol. You can't pick a country on Free, though. It connects you to one of 10 auto-chosen countries, none in Africa, and those servers get crowded at peak hours.
When the default Smart protocol struggled in our testing, we selected WireGuard manually and then switched to Stealth, which got the connection through. Download speed held up on nearby servers, while upload fell off on distant ones. Paid plans add Smart Routing IPs for Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Togo, all hosted in London.
Securitum has audited the no-logs policy every year from 2022 to 2026. VPN Plus costs $3.49 a month on the 2-year plan or $9.99 monthly. Support is slower than rivals, with email replies taking about two days.
3. Surfshark: best budget VPN for Burkina Faso
Surfshark competes on price. It scores 8.6 in our Surfshark review and starts at $2.49 a month on the 2-year plan, the lowest two-year price here. Unlimited devices means one subscription covers a whole household.
Setup took us under five minutes from download to a connected server. A large torrent finished only about 5% slower than without the VPN, though uploads lagged. Latency jumped even on nearby servers. We noticed the lag in calls but not in browsing. On heavily restrictive networks, Camouflage and NoBorders connections dropped at times and held best on OpenVPN over TCP.
Deloitte verified the no-logs policy in 2023 and 2025. Renewal runs roughly $59 to $79 a year, depending on term and currency.
4. Private Internet Access: best for customization
Private Internet Access is the tinkerer's choice, scoring 8.4 in our PIA review. Its apps explain each setting in plain language, while protocol, encryption and port forwarding sit one tap away.
In our testing, PIA barely dented download speed, running about 5% slower, but upload fell sharply. Turning on Shadowsocks obfuscation cost about a quarter of our speed, and it only works with OpenVPN. The kill switch cut traffic reliably when a server dropped, and we saw no IPv6, DNS or WebRTC leaks.
PIA costs $2.03 a month on the 3 years + 3 months plan or $11.95 monthly. Its Ghana IP is hosted in Frankfurt.
5. ExpressVPN: best for reliable connections
Where NordVPN and Proton make you pick an obfuscation mode, ExpressVPN obfuscates every server automatically. It scores 8.2 on this page, and our ExpressVPN review has the full test. There is nothing to configure before you connect from a restricted network.
In our testing it held roughly 90 to 95 percent of base download speed, even during 4K streaming. Lightway handled a phone switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data smoothly, with low battery use. Its Ghana IP is hosted in Germany and its Nigeria IP in Spain.
Basic costs $2.99 a month on the 2-year plan, then renews at $99.95 a year. That makes it pricier than rivals for a similar feature set once the first term ends.
Why you need a VPN in Burkina Faso
About 5.42 million people, or 22.4% of the population, were online in October 2025. For them, a VPN means privacy on shared networks, access to outlets the regulator has blocked, and resilience when platforms get restricted during a crisis.
Internet shutdowns and social media blocks
Mobile internet was cut nationwide on 20 November 2021, after protesters were shot during a protest against a French military convoy. A 96-hour order was extended, and mobile data returned on 29 November, as Access Now's report on the Burkina Faso shutdowns documents. Mobile data dropped again on 10 January 2022 for about 15 hours, and on 19 January the government confirmed it had restricted Facebook. A third cut, during the 23 January coup, lasted about 35 hours.
Since then, blocks have targeted news sites. In April 2024 the media regulator, the CSC, had ISPs block the BBC, VOA and Human Rights Watch websites. It then added nine more outlets, including TV5Monde and Le Monde. That brought RSF's tally of banned international media to 13.
A VPN gets you back to Facebook, WhatsApp or a blocked news site when access is restricted at the network level. It cannot connect at all when mobile internet is cut outright, as in November 2021 and January 2022.
Public Wi-Fi in hotels, cafes and airports
Hotel, cafe and waiting-room Wi-Fi in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso usually runs on one shared password for everyone on site. Encrypting your traffic with a VPN before it crosses that network is the simplest way to stay safe on public Wi-Fi. Keep it on while your phone hops between Wi-Fi and mobile data, so there is no unprotected gap. Our guide to the best VPNs for public Wi-Fi goes deeper.
Streaming and local content from abroad
RTB, BF1 and 3TV live streams are usually reachable on the web, Facebook or YouTube without a Burkinabé IP. French services such as TF1+, M6+ and france.tv restrict replays to France, and every pick has physical servers there. myCANAL checks account country, payment method and IP together, so a VPN alone won't get you in. See our best VPNs for streaming for more.
Is it legal to use a VPN in Burkina Faso?
No law we found prohibits personal VPN use in Burkina Faso, and the regulator publishes no blacklist of consumer VPNs. There is no VPN-specific law either, so legality rests on the absence of a ban rather than explicit permission.
Content is a different matter. Organic Law No. 041-2023/ALT lets the CSC order ISPs to block sites. Freedom House's Freedom in the World 2026 report rates the country Not Free, with a Global Freedom Score of 20/100. A VPN doesn't change what you're allowed to post, so stay up to date on local rules.
What to look for in a VPN for Burkina Faso
Obfuscation. It disguises VPN traffic so restricted networks are less likely to stop it. Every pick has a version, from ExpressVPN's always-on mode to PIA's Shadowsocks.
Servers near West Africa. Most "nearby" locations actually run from Europe. Traffic out of Ouagadougou often routes via Abidjan, Accra, Lagos, Marseille or Paris, so the fastest server isn't always the closest on the map.
WireGuard on mobile. WireGuard is the fastest and most battery-efficient protocol on local mobile data or an eSIM.
A kill switch and audited no-logs. A kill switch blocks traffic if the tunnel drops, and an independent audit backs the no-logs promise.
Payment you can use. No pick lists Orange Money or Moov Money, so check your card works before you commit.
Can you use a free VPN in Burkina Faso?
Yes, but only Proton VPN's free plan earns our recommendation. The "VPN gratuit" APKs that circulate locally tend to carry ads, collect data and run on saturated servers. Some have been tampered with. A CSIRO study of 283 Android VPN apps found 18% sent traffic unencrypted and 38% had malware detections. Our best free VPN guide lists the safe options.
How to set up a VPN in Burkina Faso
Set the VPN up before you arrive, because VPN sites, app stores and card payments can be temperamental while roaming. Our guide to setting up a VPN covers each platform.
- Choose a provider and pay at home with an international card.
- Install the app on every device and sign in.
- Open the app, go to Settings, then turn on the kill switch.
- Set the protocol to WireGuard, and save a WireGuard or OpenVPN profile in case the app struggles on a weak connection.
- Connect once and check your banking and messaging apps through the VPN.
- If it later stops connecting, open Settings, go to Protocol and choose WireGuard or IKEv2, or change server location.
Getting a Burkina Faso IP address from abroad
Only NordVPN can give you one: connect to its Ouagadougou location, and sites see a Burkinabé IP. Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark and PIA list no Burkina Faso server.
If any West African IP will do, Proton's Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal or Togo locations and NordVPN's Ghana or Senegal servers come closest. Banking and mobile-money apps such as Orange Money can ask for extra verification when a login comes from an unusual country, so stick to one location.
How we chose the best VPNs for Burkina Faso
We started from each provider's score in our full reviews, where every VPN goes through speed, leak, streaming and support checks. For this guide we then went through each pick's server list for Burkina Faso and its nearest West African locations, noting which are physical and which are virtual.
We weighted obfuscation, mobile-data performance, audited no-logs policies and usable payment options. We did not run speed tests from inside the country, so the speed figures here come from our standard testing.
