Best VPNs for Algeria in 2026: Stay Private and Connected

Best VPNs for Algeria in 2026: Stay Private and Connected

If you live in Algeria or visit often, you already know the pattern. A WhatsApp call drops after a few seconds, Facebook stops loading on exam mornings, or a game your kids play suddenly refuses to connect. A good VPN gets you around most of these selective blocks. Our top pick for Algeria is NordVPN, whose obfuscated servers connect on networks that reject ordinary VPN traffic.

Personal VPN use is not prohibited in Algeria, although Algerian law still covers what you do online. We also want to be honest about the limits from the start. A VPN helps with blocked apps, throttled connections and privacy on public Wi-Fi, but no VPN can bring back the internet during a full national cutoff.

Below we rank six providers by our review scores, then explain the exam-week restrictions, the legal picture, and how to set a VPN up before you need it.

Quick Comparison: The Best VPNs for Algeria

Every provider on this list offers an Algeria location, but none of them runs a confirmed physical server inside the country. The table shows how each one handles stealth, devices and refunds.

How We Chose the Best VPNs for Algeria

Before we get to the reviews, here is how we judged them. Compared with a general VPN ranking, our Algeria criteria weigh stealth and local IPs more heavily, so we checked every provider against the three things that matter most here. For the wider picture, see our full best VPN rankings.

Obfuscation That Survives Throttling and Blocks

A VPN that works fine in Europe can fail on a network that inspects traffic. We favoured providers with a stealth option you can turn on quickly: NordWhisper, Proton's Stealth, ExpressVPN's automatic obfuscation, Surfshark's Camouflage and PIA's Shadowsocks. When a connection failed, switching protocol (WireGuard, IKEv2 or an obfuscated option) or trying another server location usually brought it back. Our guide on how to make your VPN undetectable goes deeper on the techniques. If a connection still refuses to hold, our walkthrough on how to bypass a VPN blocker covers more fixes.

Servers in Algeria or Nearby Countries

No major provider runs a confirmed physical server inside Algeria. Every Algerian location whose hosting we could confirm is virtual and served from Spain, Germany or the UK, so latency stays close to that of a European connection. That's fine for most uses, because an Algerian IP is only needed for local services. For everything else, servers in France and Spain work well from Algeria and are the natural fallback. Tunisia and Morocco are thinner: Proton covers both through Smart Routing, while most others offer Morocco only.

Speed, No-Logs Privacy and Price

Algerian connections are now quick enough that a nearby server's overhead is rarely noticeable for browsing, calls or HD streaming. We weighed independent no-logs audits heavily, since every pick here has at least one. On price, we compared the long-term rate, the renewal rate and the money-back window, because a 30-day guarantee is what makes trying a provider risk-free.

The Best VPNs for Algeria in 2026

We ordered these picks by our full review scores. NordVPN and Proton VPN tie at 9.0, and Private Internet Access and CyberGhost tie at 8.4. Within each tie we put the provider with the stronger stealth option first, because stealth matters more in Algeria than almost anywhere else.

1. NordVPN - Best Overall VPN for Algeria

NordVPN takes the top spot because it pairs a dedicated stealth mode with one of the longest audit records in the industry. Its Obfuscated Servers category now runs on NordWhisper, a protocol built to look less like VPN traffic, and you use it simply by picking that category and connecting.

We connected through NordWhisper on a restrictive network that blocks standard WireGuard traffic, and it got through where the default NordLynx connection would not. That stealth has a price in speed. In our slow-line test set, the obfuscated servers ran at about 7.5 Mbps against 11.5 Mbps on NordLynx, so we only switch to them when the normal connection fails. On nearby NordLynx servers, our download-speed loss averaged around 5 percent, which you won't notice on a typical Algerian connection.

NordVPN's Windows app with the Specialty servers list expanded and the Obfuscated Servers category highlighted, ready to connect on a restricted network.

The Algeria location is virtual: the physical server sits in Spain and hands you an Algerian IP address. NordVPN also offers a virtual Morocco location hosted in Spain. Its physical servers in France and Spain are the natural fallbacks from Algeria. Overall coverage reaches well over 100 countries, though the exact count shifts as NordVPN adds virtual locations.

On privacy, NordVPN has been through six independent no-logs assessments, from PwC in 2018 and 2020 to Deloitte in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. The company was founded in 2012 and is incorporated in Panama. You get AES-256 encryption, optional post-quantum encryption on NordLynx, Threat Protection, and both Internet and App kill switches.

Plans start from about $3.49 a month on the 2-year Basic plan, though NordVPN's promo price moves with its sales and by currency. Renewal costs noticeably more than the intro rate, and the charge lands about two weeks before the term ends, so set a reminder. A 30-day money-back guarantee keeps the first month risk-free, and each account covers 10 devices.

Pros

  • NordWhisper obfuscation connects where WireGuard traffic is blocked
  • Six independent no-logs assessments, the latest covering obfuscated servers
  • Prompt support with accurate, specific answers from human agents

Cons

  • You must switch to obfuscated servers manually in restrictive conditions
  • Obfuscated servers are noticeably slower than NordLynx
  • City selection on mobile hides behind an easy-to-miss three-dot menu

2. Proton VPN - Best for Privacy and Stealth Connections

Where NordVPN hides its stealth mode in a server category, Proton VPN makes it a protocol you can use on any plan, including the free one. Stealth wraps VPN traffic in obfuscated TLS over TCP to resist deep packet inspection. To turn it on, open Settings → Protocol and choose Stealth.

When Proton's default Smart protocol struggled on a network that filters VPN traffic, we selected WireGuard manually first, then OpenVPN. When those failed, switching to Stealth got the connection through. On nearby servers download speed held up well, but upload fell off sharply once we moved to distant locations. That matters if you send large files or make video calls through Europe.

The Algeria location is a Smart Routing server physically hosted in London, and it is only available on paid plans. Proton runs the same setup for Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, and it has physical servers in France and Spain. Paid plans reach servers in 140+ countries and cover 10 devices.

Privacy is Proton's strongest argument. The company launched Proton VPN in 2017, operates from Switzerland, and publishes its apps as open source. Securitum has audited its no-logs policy in each of the five consecutive years from 2022 through 2026.

VPN Plus costs $9.99 month-to-month, or from about $3 a month on the 2-year plan, a price that changes between sales. The 30-day money-back guarantee refunds only the unused portion rather than the full amount, so test it in your first few days. Support is also slower than at NordVPN: live chat can take several minutes, and email replies take about two days.

Pros

  • Stealth protocol on every plan, including Free
  • Securitum no-logs audits every year from 2022 through 2026
  • Swiss jurisdiction and open-source apps
  • Smart Routing locations for Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia

Cons

  • Algeria location is paid-only
  • Refund is prorated rather than in full
  • Upload speed drops sharply on distant servers

3. ExpressVPN - Hands-Off Obfuscation for Beginners

ExpressVPN takes a different approach from the first two picks. Obfuscation runs automatically on every server and protocol, so there is no setting to find before you connect from a restricted network. That makes it the easiest option to hand to a relative who will never open a settings menu.

The stealth layer also costs very little speed. On the same slow test line where NordLynx managed 11.5 Mbps, ExpressVPN's Lightway protocol with obfuscation held about 10.4 Mbps down, far closer to that mark than NordVPN's obfuscated servers got. Connections completed quickly, and the Network Lock kill switch never threw a false positive during our sessions. The only extra step at setup is copying an activation code from checkout into the app.

ExpressVPN's Algeria location is virtual and hosted in Germany, as are its Morocco and Egypt locations. Tunisia is not on its virtual list. The wider network covers 113 countries, with physical servers in France and Spain for European fallbacks.

Its privacy record rests on 23 third-party audits to date and on KPMG's 2025 reasonable-assurance assessment of TrustedServer, its RAM-only server setup. ExpressVPN was founded in 2009 and has been owned by Kape Technologies since 2021.

Pricing is where it loses ground. The 2-year plans cost $2.99 a month for Basic, $4.49 for Advanced and $7.49 for Pro, but they autorenew at $99.95, $119.95 and $199.95 a year. You get 10 devices on Basic, 12 on Advanced and 14 on Pro. There's no free plan, but a 7-day free trial is available through the mobile app stores, and the 30-day money-back guarantee applies to new users.

Pros

  • Obfuscation is always on, with nothing to configure
  • Lightway keeps most of its speed with stealth active
  • One of the most beginner-friendly app sets
  • RAM-only TrustedServer setup assessed by KPMG

Cons

  • Renewal prices are well above the intro rate
  • No Tunisia location found
  • Split tunneling is missing on iOS

4. Surfshark - Best Value With Unlimited Devices

If ExpressVPN is the simplest pick, Surfshark is the one for big households. Every plan allows unlimited simultaneous connections, so one subscription covers every phone, laptop and TV in the house for $2.49 a month on the 2-year Starter or One plan.

Surfshark lists 4 Algerian servers in one location, though it does not say whether they are virtual. It also covers Morocco and Egypt, plus three cities each in France (Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille) and Spain (Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona). In total it runs 4,500+ servers in 100 countries.

Its stealth story needs more care than the picks above. Camouflage mode works only over OpenVPN, the slower protocol, and switches on by itself whenever you use it. On heavily restrictive networks, our NoBorders and Camouflage connections sometimes dropped and failed to reconnect, and they held up best on OpenVPN over TCP. Upload also suffered: on a slow test line, Camouflage mode pushed upload down to about 0.5 Mbps. Away from those conditions it was quick, and a large torrent finished only about 5% slower than without the VPN.

Setup took under five minutes from download to a connected server, and live chat replied in under a minute with accurate answers. Latency jumped even on nearby servers, which we noticed on calls and in games but not while browsing. Deloitte verified Surfshark's no-logs policy in 2023 and again in 2025. Surfshark was founded in 2018 and is based in the Netherlands. Renewal on Starter runs about $79 a year, though the amount varies by term and currency, and a 30-day money-back guarantee applies.

Pros

  • Unlimited devices on every plan
  • 4 Algerian servers plus French and Spanish cities
  • Deloitte no-logs verification in 2023 and 2025
  • Fast setup and quick live chat

Cons

  • Camouflage only works over the slower OpenVPN protocol
  • Stealth connections can drop on heavily restricted networks
  • Latency rises even on nearby servers

5. Private Internet Access - Best Budget Pick With Algerian Servers

Private Internet Access is the cheapest long-term option here, at $2.03 a month on the 3-year plan with 3 extra months, billed $79 every three years. It also allows unlimited devices, matching Surfshark, and offers an Algiers location.

That Algiers location is virtual. PIA's current help centre lists the physical host as Frankfurt, but the company has moved it over time, so the hosting country may differ from what the app shows today. The full network spans 91 countries, including France and Spain.

Setup was quick: we signed in and the app connected to a recommended server with one tap. On nearby servers, speeds stayed at 150 to 200 Mbps or above, though long-haul routes lost more speed than the top-tier rivals did. The app looks dated, but it exposes controls the others hide, including a three-level kill switch (Off, Auto, Always), a choice of AES-128 or AES-256 encryption, and Shadowsocks obfuscation. Shadowsocks is available on desktop and Android but not on iOS, which is the main gap for iPhone users in Algeria.

PIA is based in the US, which puts off some privacy-minded users. Even so, Deloitte has audited its no-logs policy, most recently in a report published February 24, 2026. Monthly billing costs $11.95, the 1-year plan costs $3.99 a month, and a 30-day money-back guarantee covers new subscribers. The Fire TV app occasionally hit login hiccups that a reinstall cleared.

Pros

  • Lowest long-term price on this list
  • Granular kill switch, encryption and protocol controls
  • Direct APK download for Android phones without Google Play

Cons

  • No Shadowsocks obfuscation on iOS
  • Dated app design
  • Long-haul speeds lag the top picks

6. CyberGhost - Easiest for Beginners and Streaming

CyberGhost ties PIA on score but sits last for Algeria for one reason: it has no obfuscation or stealth mode. On networks that actively block VPN traffic during exam-week restrictions, it has nothing extra to fall back on.

Where it shines is everyday ease and streaming. On mobile, the app connects as soon as you select a server, and the kill switch is on by default. On a close streaming server, HD and 4K streams started quickly without buffering, with latency of around 21 to 23 ms. Disney+, HBO Max and Prime Video worked reliably only on the dedicated streaming servers. Our DNS and WebRTC leak tests came back clean. Two quirks stood out: switching locations briefly dropped the tunnel before the new connection settled, and the macOS app sometimes showed a false "no internet" message.

CyberGhost has the most Algerian capacity of any pick, with 34 virtual servers in Algiers. Nearby, it lists 26 virtual servers in Rabat, 776 physical servers in France and 205 in Spain, out of 9,600 servers in 100 countries. Deloitte Audit Romania issued no-logs assurance reports in 2022, 2024 and 2025. It operates from Romania under Kape Technologies, its owner since 2017.

The 2-year plan costs $2.19 a month, billed $56.94 for the first term. On plans of six months or longer, the 45-day money-back guarantee is the longest here. You can connect 7 devices.

Pros

  • Smooth HD and 4K streaming on nearby servers
  • 45-day money-back guarantee on longer plans
  • Clean DNS and WebRTC leak results

Cons

  • No obfuscation or stealth protocol
  • Tunnel drops briefly when you switch locations
  • Only 7 devices per account

Why You Need a VPN in Algeria

Those stealth options matter because Algeria's restrictions are frequent and tend to arrive without warning. The country is online at scale, with 37.8 million internet users and 27.5 million social media identities as of October 2025, so the blocks affect daily life for a large share of the population. Authorities sometimes block independent news outlets and, more recently, platforms such as Roblox, which Algeria cut off on September 8, 2025, citing child-safety concerns. If you follow other restrictive markets, our guides to the best VPN for Iran and the best VPN for China cover heavier censorship regimes.

Baccalaureate Exam Shutdowns: What a VPN Can and Cannot Do

Algeria restricts the internet during its baccalaureate exams to stop questions leaking, and Access Now's #KeepItOn shutdown tracker has recorded these exam-period disruptions year after year. The method has changed. The 2021 exams brought wide-scale internet shutdowns, while 2022 and 2023 shifted to content blocking with connections kept up. From June 11 to 15, 2023, blocks ran twice a day, from 08:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00 local time. In the June 9 to 13, 2024 session, social media and messaging apps were blocked nationwide.

The pattern has eased since. In the June 15 to 19, 2025 session, restrictions narrowed to partial blocks of Facebook and TikTok on exam mornings. Bac 2026 began on June 7 with more than 876,000 candidates and no nationwide cut. Instead, connections were cut only at exam centres and their immediate surroundings during exam hours.

Watch out

A VPN cannot restore a full national internet shutdown. During a true cut, like the 2021 exam shutdowns, there is no connection to tunnel through, so no VPN will connect.

What a VPN can do is work around content blocks, where the connection stays up but social media and messaging apps are filtered. Exam-week blocking can also catch circumvention tools: in June 2024, Tor tests showed the same anomaly pattern as WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal. So in exam week, follow three rules:

  1. Install and test your VPN before the session starts, since the windows arrive without an official schedule.
  2. Keep an obfuscated option ready, such as NordWhisper, Proton's Stealth or PIA's Shadowsocks, and know where the setting is.
  3. Expect nothing during a full cut, and plan offline alternatives for anything urgent.

Social Media, WhatsApp and VoIP Restrictions

Messaging and calls are the restriction most people notice. OONI network measurements from Algeria recorded anomalies for WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and Facebook Messenger from June 9, 2024, and in 2019 Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and WhatsApp were all reported blocked during the exams.

Outside exam weeks the picture is less clear. Algeria has never announced a standing VoIP ban. Call reliability appears to vary by operator and period, so treat call blocking as intermittent rather than permanent. WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype and Viber calls can fail or drop within seconds on Algerie Telecom, Ooredoo and Djezzy while text messages still go through, and an obfuscated VPN connection can keep those calls up. At other times, calls work normally on Algerian mobile data. For social apps specifically, our best VPN for Facebook guide covers which providers handle Meta's apps best.

An Android phone mid-call in WhatsApp with a VPN key icon visible in the status bar, showing the call timer running past two minutes.

Surveillance and Public Wi-Fi Risks

The government monitors internet activity in the name of national security, and it does not disclose the scope or targets. A VPN encrypts your traffic between your device and the VPN server, so your operator and anyone on the same café or hotel Wi-Fi sees only an encrypted connection. It does not make you anonymous to the sites you sign into, and it does not change what Algerian law says about the content you post.

Watching Algerian TV From Abroad (ENTV, El Heddaf)

For the diaspora, the reverse problem matters. People in France or Canada want to reach Algerian channels such as ENTV, Canal Algerie, El Heddaf TV, Ennahar TV and Echorouk TV, along with banks like BEA, CPA and BNA. Whether a given stream restricts foreign viewers varies, and El Heddaf's stated broadcast area already covers Europe, Africa and the Middle East. If a stream or banking site does refuse a foreign IP, an Algerian virtual location from any of our six picks is the tool to try. The opposite also applies: France.tv, TF1, M6 and Canal+ are geo-blocked on Algerian IPs, so watching French TV from Algeria needs a French server.

Blocks are one question, and legality is another. Personal VPN use is legal in practice in Algeria, and no Algerian law names it as an offence. The regulator has pushed back, though. In October 2019 it said any VPN use outside the regulatory framework violates the law and must be declared, a position that has never been tested against ordinary users. So "not prohibited in practice" is the accurate framing rather than a blanket guarantee.

The bigger risk is what you post. Freedom House's 2025 Algeria report rates the country 31/100, Not Free, and notes that social media users face prosecution for critical comments about the government or religion. The penal code published in May 2024 also penalizes posts criticizing security forces or officials. A VPN protects your connection, not your words, so the same caution applies whether or not you're connected.

How to Use a VPN in Algeria (and Get an Algerian IP Address)

With the legal picture clear, the next step is getting set up, and the order matters. VPN vendor websites can be blocked from inside Algeria, and social media may already be filtered when you land, so setting up at home first is the reliable approach:

  1. Subscribe to a provider with an obfuscated protocol and an Algeria location, such as NordVPN.
  2. Install before you travel, or download from the official app store rather than the vendor site, and sign in on every device you plan to use.
  3. Connect to an Algerian server if you need a local IP, or to France or Spain for general browsing and French TV. Turn on the VPN kill switch so traffic stops if the tunnel drops.
  4. Test for leaks before relying on it. Our guide shows how to test for DNS leaks in under a minute.
Tip

Find the stealth setting before you need it. In NordVPN, pick the Obfuscated Servers category; in Proton VPN, open Settings → Protocol and choose Stealth.

Are Free VPNs Safe to Use in Algeria?

Setup is the easy part, and choosing a provider you can trust matters more. For free VPNs, the answer is mostly no. A CSIRO-led study of 283 Android VPN apps found that 18% tunnel traffic without encryption and over 38% show some sign of malware. About 84% did not tunnel IPv6 traffic, 66% did not tunnel DNS traffic, and 75% used third-party tracking libraries. Free VPNs are also the first connections to get throttled or blocked on restrictive networks, which is exactly when you need yours to hold.

The one free option we'd consider is Proton VPN's free plan, which includes Stealth and a kill switch with no data cap. You can't select Algeria on it, though, and its servers get crowded at peak hours. If cost is the deciding factor, see the truly free VPNs we tested, or use a paid plan's money-back guarantee as a trial.

Using a VPN on Your Phone in Algeria

Whichever plan you choose, you will most likely run it on a phone. Most Algerians reach the internet on Mobilis, Djezzy or Ooredoo mobile data, so the phone app matters more than the desktop one. All six picks have Android and iOS apps, but stealth support differs. Proton's Stealth works on both platforms, while PIA's Shadowsocks skips iOS, and CyberGhost's iOS app omits split tunneling. On Android, PIA offers a direct APK for phones without Google Play. On NordVPN's mobile app, the option to pick a specific city hides behind a three-dot menu, so look there if you want Madrid rather than any Spanish server.

4G coverage is good in Algiers and other major cities but very limited in the Sahara, around Tassili n'Ajjer and the Hoggar. A VPN can't fix a weak signal, so download what you need before heading south.

FAQ

Is it legal to use a VPN in Algeria as a tourist?
There are no known cases of travellers being penalised for personal VPN use. The one public enforcement case involved a business: in October 2019 the regulator cut internet at the VFS Global visa centre in Algiers over an unlicensed VPN, and the French consulate briefly suspended visa processing until service returned the next day.
Is a virtual Algerian server as good as a physical one?
For most uses, yes. A virtual location gives websites an Algerian IP address while the hardware sits elsewhere, usually in Europe. The trade-off is that the provider can move the host without telling you: PIA's current help centre lists Frankfurt for its Algiers location, while an older PIA article listed Madrid.
Why does Algeria cut the internet during the baccalaureate, and does a VPN help?
The restrictions began after the 2016 baccalaureate leak, when questions spread on social media and over 500,000 students had to retake exams. They haven't fully stopped leaks, though, since 77 students were charged in 2021 for publishing exam answers. A VPN helps against content blocks but not during a full cut.
Are WhatsApp calls and VoIP blocked in Algeria?
Not by a standing ban, though WhatsApp is under new pressure. In August 2026 the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications asked Meta to tie every WhatsApp account in Algeria to a number from an Algerian operator and to bar username-only accounts. That request targets account registration, which a VPN doesn't change.
Are free VPNs safe in Algeria?
Proton VPN's free plan is the exception worth knowing about. It has unlimited data, no ads and Stealth, but it picks your server automatically from 10 countries and allows just 1 device. Most other free apps carry tracking or leak risks.
How do I watch ENTV and El Heddaf from abroad?
Try the free options first. El Heddaf streams live on its website, posts replays on YouTube and broadcasts free-to-air on satellite. If a site blocks your foreign IP, connect to an Algerian virtual server and reload.
Will a VPN slow down my internet in Algeria?
Only a little on a nearby server. Median speeds reached 41.21 Mbps on mobile and 37.86 Mbps on fixed lines by the end of 2025, and NordVPN lost only about 5 percent on nearby NordLynx servers. Obfuscated modes cost more, so use them only when needed.

Final Verdict: Which VPN Should You Use in Algeria?

All six VPNs give you an Algerian IP and a refund window, so the choice comes down to how you'll use it. Proton VPN is the pick if privacy and a free fallback matter most. ExpressVPN suits anyone who wants stealth without touching a setting, and Surfshark or PIA cover a whole household for less. CyberGhost is for streaming and simplicity on networks that don't block VPNs.
