Best VPN for Benin in 2026

Best VPN for Benin in 2026

If you live in Benin or are travelling there, most of the internet is open day to day, and no law we found prohibits personal VPN use. The clear exception came on 28 April 2019, when access was cut nationwide during the legislative elections. That makes privacy on mobile data and public Wi-Fi the everyday reason to run a VPN, with resilience around elections second. Our top pick is NordVPN, which pairs audited no-logs privacy with one-tap obfuscated servers and a large server hub in Johannesburg.

Quick picks: the best VPNs for Benin

We chose each pick first by its score in our full review, then by how well its network serves a connection that starts in Cotonou.

The best VPNs for Benin, reviewed

All five have audited no-logs policies and apps for phones and computers. The speed, streaming and leak results below come from our full reviews of each service, not from tests run inside Benin, so a "nearby" server means one near our test location. For this guide we also went through each provider's Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and France locations to see which are physical and which are virtual.

1. NordVPN - best overall for Benin

NordVPN shares the top score in our NordVPN review (9.0 out of 10) with Proton VPN, and it leads here because it covers every need in Benin without a free-tier trade-off. Its Nigeria location is virtual, with the server in the United Kingdom. For real proximity, use its 50+ servers in South Africa, almost all in Johannesburg, or its 300+ servers in France for French-language services.

Performance is where NordVPN earned its place on our bench. In our full-review testing, download-speed loss on nearby NordLynx servers averaged around 5 percent. Switching to the Obfuscated Servers category cost a little more speed, the usual trade for traffic that is harder to spot. It needed no extra setup, because the category now runs on NordWhisper. For Benin the hub that matters most is South Africa, where NordVPN's servers have topped 400 Mbps in regional tests, though they slow down somewhat in the evening peak.

Privacy rests on six independent no-logs assessments, the latest by Deloitte in 2025, and support was prompt, with accurate answers from human agents. The Basic plan costs about $3.49 a month on the 2-year plan (the promo price moves with sales and currency) or $12.99 month to month, for 10 devices with a 30-day money-back guarantee. The price climbs sharply at renewal, and on mobile the city picker hides behind an easy-to-miss three-dot menu.

2. Proton VPN - best free plan

Proton VPN ties for our top score (9.0 in our Proton VPN review) and is the only pick with physical servers in Nigeria. Its Lagos servers make it the shortest real route out of Benin. Paid plans add Smart Routing locations for Togo, Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal, but those are hosted in London, so they give a regional IP rather than a shorter path.

The free plan has no data cap, no ads and the Stealth protocol. You cannot pick a country, though. The app connects you to one of 10 auto-chosen countries, none in Africa, and free servers get crowded at peak hours. In our testing the default Smart protocol struggled to connect, so we switched to WireGuard or OpenVPN manually. Where that was not enough, turning on Stealth from Settings > Protocol > Stealth got the connection through. Download speed held up well on nearby servers, while upload fell off sharply on distant ones.

Securitum has audited the no-logs policy every year from 2022 to 2026. VPN Plus costs $3.49 a month on the 2-year plan or $9.99 month to month. The 30-day refund is prorated to unused time. Support is slower than rivals, with email replies taking about two days.

3. ExpressVPN - most consistent speeds

Where Proton wins on proximity, ExpressVPN wins on steadiness, and the phone is where that showed. Setup starts with copying an activation code from checkout into the app, and from then on it is one-click connect. In our full-review testing it held roughly 90 to 95 percent of base download speed through 4K streaming and large downloads. When our phone moved between Wi-Fi and mobile data, Lightway carried the connection across smoothly with low battery use. Obfuscation is always on, so there is nothing to configure.

That consistency earns it 8.8 in our ExpressVPN review, but location is its weak spot for Benin. Nigeria is a virtual location hosted in Spain, so across its 113 countries, Johannesburg is the closest physical server. A 2025 KPMG assessment backs the no-logs policy.

Basic costs $2.99 a month on the 2-year plan, then autorenews at $99.95 a year, which makes it pricier than rivals over time.

4. Surfshark - best value

If ExpressVPN costs more over time, Surfshark is the value play. At $2.49 a month on the 2-year plan with unlimited devices, one subscription covers a whole household's phones and laptops. It scores 8.6 in our Surfshark review. Its African list includes Lagos, Ghana and South Africa, across 100 countries.

Getting started took under five minutes from download to a connected server. In our full-review testing, a large torrent then finished only about 5% slower than without the VPN, although uploads lagged behind downloads. Latency jumped even on nearby servers, which showed in calls but not in browsing. Camouflage and NoBorders modes target restricted networks, but on heavily restrictive connections they can drop and fail to reconnect. They held up best for us on OpenVPN over TCP. Live chat answered in under a minute, and the answers were accurate. Deloitte verified the no-logs policy in 2023 and again in 2025.

5. CyberGhost - easiest for beginners

CyberGhost is the easiest app here, and the only pick with no way around a VPN block. It has no obfuscation or stealth mode, so it is the weakest choice if a network blocks VPN traffic, as happened in Benin in 2019. What it offers instead is simplicity. It scores 8.4 in our CyberGhost review, highest on value, streaming and ease of use, and on mobile, selecting a server connects you automatically. Its Lagos location has 26 servers, but they are virtual; real proximity comes from 67 physical servers in Johannesburg and 776 in France, 625 of them in Paris.

Streaming is where it shone in our full-review testing. On nearby streaming servers, HD and 4K streams started quickly without buffering, with latency around 21 to 23 ms. Switching locations briefly dropped the tunnel before the new connection settled, and our DNS and WebRTC leak tests came back clean.

It costs $2.19 a month on the 2-year plan, with a 45-day money-back guarantee and 7 devices.

No law we found prohibits personal VPN use in Benin, though there is no VPN-specific law that explicitly permits it either. The Digital Code, Law 2017-20, regulates the supply of cryptology services rather than banning their use. A VPN doesn't change what you can legally post: Article 550 of the same code criminalises false information and harassment online, punishable by up to two years in prison. Freedom House's latest Benin country report rates the country 61/100, Partly Free.

Why you need a VPN in Benin

With the legal side settled, the practical question is what a VPN does for you there. Most of the open web and the major social platforms load normally in Benin, so the case for a VPN is privacy and resilience around elections rather than routine unblocking. DataReportal's Digital 2026 report for Benin counts 4.80 million internet users, a 32.2% penetration rate.

Internet shutdowns and social media blocks

Benin's best-documented disruption is the internet shutdown on the day of the April 2019 legislative elections. On 28 April 2019, Facebook, WhatsApp and other platforms were first blocked at ISP level, with Spacetel (MTN) most affected. Then the internet was cut nationwide. By the end of the day 99.5% of the country was offline, after about 15 hours of total blackout. Several VPN services were unavailable that morning, and RSF reported that the total cut, around 18:00 GMT, followed authorities noticing VPN apps in use.

No shutdown occurred on 11 April 2021, and we found no report of one around the 12 April 2026 presidential vote.

Watch out

VPN connections can be blocked during a targeted platform block, and once the network is cut nationwide no VPN can connect at all.

Public Wi-Fi and mobile data privacy

Benin has three mobile operators: Spacetel (MTN), Celtiis and Moov Africa. Spacetel is the largest, with about 6.96 million subscriptions. A VPN encrypts your traffic on all three and on hotel or café Wi-Fi. Keep it on while your phone moves between mobile data and Wi-Fi to avoid unprotected gaps during the handover.

What matters in a VPN for Benin

Server locations near Benin and speed

Pick by physical location, not by the flag in the list. Every connection from Benin hops to a neighbouring country or to Europe, and a virtual "Nigeria" server sends your traffic to Europe anyway. With a median fixed download speed of 24.49 Mbps, Benin connections have little headroom, so a physically close server matters.

WireGuard and obfuscation on variable connections

WireGuard is the fastest and most battery-efficient protocol on local mobile data or an eSIM; our guide to how WireGuard works explains why. Obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as ordinary web traffic, which helps when a network puts restrictions on VPN connections.

No-logs policy and jurisdiction

Favour a provider whose no-logs policy has been audited repeatedly and whose home country sits outside Benin. All five picks pass that bar.

Streaming and local content from Benin

For French-language services, Paris and Marseille servers are the natural choice, and every pick has physical servers in France. For US or UK streaming libraries, connect to a server in that country. CyberGhost played Netflix US, UK and Canada smoothly in our testing, while Disney+, HBO Max and Prime Video were reliable only on its dedicated streaming servers.

Can a free VPN work in Benin?

Most free VPNs are a poor fit. A CSIRO study of 283 Android VPN apps found that 18% didn't encrypt traffic and 38% had malware detections. Free servers also get crowded, many cap data, and some sell user data. Proton VPN's free plan is the safe exception.

How to set up a VPN in Benin

  1. Install the app before you arrive and confirm your banking and messaging apps work through it.
  2. Open the app's settings and choose WireGuard (NordLynx on NordVPN, Lightway on ExpressVPN).
  3. Connect to Lagos, Johannesburg or Paris, depending on what you need.
  4. Leave the VPN on as you move between networks.

If an app store is unreachable, Proton offers an Android APK direct from its website.

If your VPN stops working in Benin

Open Settings > Protocol and choose WireGuard or IKEv2, or change server location. One of those two fixes usually restores the connection. If a network blocks VPNs outright, switch on your provider's obfuscation mode.

How we tested VPNs for Benin

We ranked the five by the scores from our full reviews, where we measure speed loss, run DNS and WebRTC leak tests and check streaming services. On top of the physical-or-virtual check of each server list, we weighed obfuscation, audit history and price for a connection that starts in Benin.

FAQ

Will travellers get in trouble for using a VPN in Benin?
We found no known cases of travellers being penalised for using one. That reflects the absence of a ban rather than an explicit permission, so the content you post still has to stay within local law.
What is the best VPN for Benin?
NordVPN for most people. If you want the longest window to change your mind, CyberGhost's 2-year and 6-month plans carry a 45-day refund.
Can I try a paid VPN for free first?
On two picks, yes. CyberGhost offers free trials of 24 hours on Windows and macOS, 3 days on Android and 7 days on iOS, and ExpressVPN has a 7-day trial through the mobile app stores. The others rely on their money-back guarantee instead.
Does a VPN help during internet shutdowns or social media blocks in Benin?
Only during a partial block. Social media interruptions came in the weeks before the 2021 vote while the wider network stayed up. That kind of partial block is when a VPN with obfuscation is useful. During a full shutdown, nothing connects.
Will a VPN slow my connection in Benin?
A little. A Europe server adds more delay than one in Lagos or Johannesburg, so pick the closest location that meets your need.
How can I pay for a VPN in Benin?
An international card is simplest. PayPal, Google Pay and crypto work on most picks, though NordVPN's PayPal option depends on your country, and Proton also accepts cash by mail.
