VirtualShield is not a bad VPN, but it has been out-competed. It connects quickly and streams well, yet its network is small, its prices run high, and no independent firm has ever audited its no-logs policy. We scored it 7.0/10 in our VirtualShield VPN review, and all seven picks below beat that score.
NordVPN is the best VirtualShield alternative for most people. Proton VPN comes a close second and is the strongest free option, while ExpressVPN is the one we would choose for streaming. We judged every service against VirtualShield on the same points: audited no-logs proof, network size, device limits, speed on our own connections and what you pay once the first term ends.

1. NordVPN - Best VirtualShield Alternative Overall
NordVPN fixes the two things that hold VirtualShield back most, network size and proof of privacy. It runs 9,000+ servers from Panama, and its no-logs policy has been verified six times.
Key features
NordLynx, a WireGuard-based protocol, handles most connections, and obfuscated servers cover networks that block VPNs. Threat Protection Pro blocks ads, trackers and malware, and one account covers 10 devices across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and TV apps.
How it compares to VirtualShield
On nearby servers we lost only single-digit percentages of our speed, and a 4K stream played without buffering. Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Disney+ and HBO Max all unblocked on regular servers, which matters because Disney+ and Hulu failed on VirtualShield. Our one irritation came early. The desktop map made us zoom in before city-level servers appeared, so we switched to the faster list view. NordVPN's sixth no-logs assurance by Deloitte gives it the outside proof VirtualShield lacks. Our NordVPN review has the full scoring.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Connections held without drops, and the kill switch cut traffic when the tunnel failed
- Basic costs $5.49 a month on the 1-year plan, well under VirtualShield's App Store rates
Cons
- No free plan
- Renewal jumps well above the promotional rate and is charged about two weeks early
2. Proton VPN - Best Free VirtualShield Alternative
Proton VPN ties NordVPN on our score but wins for anyone who does not want to pay. VirtualShield has no free plan, while Proton's free tier carries no data cap or ads and needs no credit card.
Key features
The free plan covers 1 device on servers in 10 countries that Proton chooses for you, with the kill switch and Stealth protocol included. VPN Plus costs $9.99 monthly, or about $3.49 a month on the two-year plan, and adds 10 devices, 140+ countries and Secure Core multi-hop.
How it compares to VirtualShield
Installing it took us about two minutes, and the apps explain each setting in plain language. On the free tier we saw no throttling and never hit a cap, although we could not pick the location. On the paid plan, nearby servers cut our download speed by under 10 percent. Leak tests across dozens of countries came back clean for DNS, IPv6 and WebRTC. Proton has also passed an independent no-logs audit by Securitum for the fifth year in a row. Read our Proton VPN review for plan details.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Open-source apps from a Swiss company, Proton AG
- Netflix, Disney+ and Hulu unblock on paid plans without server hopping
Cons
- Free plan allows 1 device, with no streaming or torrenting
- Live chat is not 24/7 and not open to free users
3. ExpressVPN - Best for Streaming and Restrictive Networks
ExpressVPN's intro rate looks low, but it renews at $99.95 a year and costs more than NordVPN and Surfshark on comparable terms, so you are paying for polish. It has the most refined apps in this group, servers in 113 countries and the Lightway protocol, which keeps working on networks where VirtualShield struggles because it has no obfuscation mode.
Key features
TrustedServer runs every server in RAM, Network Lock acts as the kill switch, and MediaStreamer smart DNS covers devices that cannot run a VPN app. Basic starts at about $4.99 a month on a 15-month term, depending on the current promotion, and renews at $99.95 a year. ExpressVPN is based in the British Virgin Islands and owned by Kape Technologies.
How it compares to VirtualShield
Netflix libraries in several countries, ESPN+ and Hulu all streamed without issues in our testing. Network Lock fired correctly each time a server timed out or we changed networks. The trade-off was speed. Downloads fell by roughly 37 to 39 percent on nearby servers, a bigger drop than we saw with NordVPN or Proton VPN. A 2025 KPMG assessment of ExpressVPN's privacy policy covers what VirtualShield asks you to take on trust. Our ExpressVPN review goes deeper.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Most polished apps in the group
- Router apps protect a whole home network
Cons
- Bigger speed drop than NordVPN or Proton VPN
- Email support can take close to two days to reply
4. Surfshark - Best Budget Pick for Unlimited Devices
Surfshark undercuts ExpressVPN on price and removes the device cap altogether. Starter costs $2.49 a month on the two-year plan, renews at $79 a year and covers unlimited simultaneous devices. VirtualShield markets unlimited devices too, but ties them to a 2FA feature that is still "coming soon", so the working limit is five per user for now.
How it compares to VirtualShield
Our download speed dropped about 17 percent on Windows and about 31 percent on macOS, while latency stayed steady throughout. Netflix worked across regions without detection. The native apps made setup on Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV painless, so one account covered every screen in a household. When the VPN dropped, the kill switch cut internet access instantly. Our Surfshark review covers the rest.
Key features
Surfshark runs the network from the Netherlands, with 4,500+ servers in 100 countries on RAM-only hardware. CleanWeb blocks ads, trackers and malware, Camouflage handles obfuscation, and Deloitte verified the no-logs policy in 2023 and again in 2025.
Pros and cons
Pros
- MultiHop, Nexus IP rotation and Bypasser split tunneling included
- Lowest two-year price among our paid picks
Cons
- Month-to-month billing is among the priciest in the category
- No free plan
5. Mullvad VPN - Best for No-Logs Privacy
Mullvad takes the opposite approach to VirtualShield's account model. VirtualShield's privacy policy lets it collect your name, email, phone number and postal address, while Mullvad asks for nothing and generates a random 16-digit account number instead.
Key features
Mullvad charges a flat EUR 5 a month whatever the term. It covers 5 devices, runs WireGuard only, and adds DAITA traffic padding, multihop and obfuscation. It is based in Sweden, and Cure53 completed its fourth infrastructure audit in 2024.
How it compares to VirtualShield
Sign-up took us seconds, because the account number is the only login. Local servers cost us only around 6 percent of our speed, while distant ones slowed downloads noticeably. Streaming was hit or miss, because some servers unblocked Netflix and others were detected. The strongest no-logs evidence came from a 2023 police search of Mullvad's offices, when officers arrived on April 18 with a warrant for customer data and left without taking anything. See our Mullvad VPN review for more.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Pay by cash, crypto, card, PayPal or bank transfer
- Same price on every term, with no renewal jump
Cons
- Email-only support, with replies in hours rather than minutes
- 14-day refund window, and cash payments are excluded
6. Windscribe - Best Free Plan with More Locations
Windscribe is the free alternative for people who find Proton's free tier too restrictive. Where Proton picks your server, Windscribe lets you choose your free location, and its free plan allows unlimited connections.
Key features
The free plan provides 10GB a month with a confirmed email, or 2GB without, on servers in about 10 countries that Windscribe rotates. Pro costs $9 monthly or $69 a year and opens 69+ countries. Windscribe has no dedicated no-logs audit, but a Greek court dismissed charges against its CEO on April 11, 2025, because the company held no user logs.
How it compares to VirtualShield
The free plan kept the full feature set in our testing, including the R.O.B.E.R.T. blocker and the firewall. Free servers ran at roughly the same speeds as Pro, but congestion caused sudden drops of up to 90 percent at busy times. The 10GB allowance covers only a few hours of HD video a month. Netflix access was also inconsistent on distant servers. Our Windscribe review has the details.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Double Hop, split tunneling and Stealth and WStunnel protocols
- Mobile apps are much simpler than the desktop app
Cons
- Refunds only within 7 days and under 10GB used
- No live chat, and human ticket replies can take around 18 hours
7. Private Internet Access - Best for Power Users
Where Windscribe's draw is its free plan, Private Internet Access suits people who found VirtualShield's settings too thin. Its desktop app exposes encryption strength, port forwarding and true per-app split tunneling, which VirtualShield's "Local Network Access" toggle does not offer.
How it compares to VirtualShield
The long settings list overwhelmed us at first, but it became easy to use once we had tuned it. Speed loss was small, at about 4 percent on local servers and 18 percent internationally. Streaming is where PIA falls behind VirtualShield, because US and UK Netflix no longer unblock and Disney+ and Hulu detect the VPN. Our Private Internet Access review covers every setting.
Key features
PIA covers unlimited devices for $11.95 monthly, or about $1.89 a month on a three-year deal whose rate changes often. The apps are open source, and Deloitte completed its third no-logs assurance for PIA on December 19, 2025. Like VirtualShield, PIA is based in the United States, and Kape Technologies has owned it since 2019.
Pros and cons
Pros
- MACE blocks ads, trackers and malware
- Native Linux GUI app
Cons
- Weak for streaming
- Settings can overwhelm beginners
What about CyberGhost, Hotspot Shield, TunnelBear, and Psiphon?
These four often come up as VirtualShield replacements, but each missed our list for a specific reason. CyberGhost scored 8.4/10 in our CyberGhost review, and its streaming servers opened Netflix US, BBC iPlayer and Disney+ on the first try. It covers 7 devices, though, while PIA matched its score with unlimited devices.
Hotspot Shield scored 6.5/10 in our Hotspot Shield review, below VirtualShield. Its free mobile app plays video ads on every connect and caps speed at about 2 Mbps. TunnelBear scored 7.5/10 in our TunnelBear review, and its 2GB free allowance is gone after an evening or two of video. Psiphon is a censorship circumvention tool rather than a privacy VPN, and it logs visited domains for up to 90 days.
Is there a free alternative to VirtualShield?
Yes, and two of our picks offer one. VirtualShield itself has no free plan, only a trial. Its homepage lists the trial as 7 days, while its Terms leave the trial section blank. Proton VPN is the better free choice for privacy, because it has no data cap. Windscribe is better if you want to choose locations or connect several devices at once.
Many free VPNs rely on ads or data collection to pay their bills. Proton and Windscribe fund theirs through paid upgrades, but check the privacy policy before installing any free app.
We compare more options in our guide to free VPN alternatives.
Why look for a VirtualShield alternative?
Those free plans solve the cost problem, but cost is only one of VirtualShield's weak spots. Network size is the first. VirtualShield's support page lists 19 countries, but that list dates from early 2024. We counted far fewer live locations, so the real total is uncertain. Distant servers slowed down noticeably in our testing, and the small network left few nearby fallbacks when a server was busy.
Price is the second. VirtualShield costs $12.99 monthly or $107.99 a year through the App Store, and it does not publish its web prices. Features are the third. There is no obfuscation, and "Local Network Access" only controls traffic between devices on the same Wi-Fi rather than routing individual apps outside the tunnel. On Windows, the desktop app used 300MB or more of RAM with protection on, enough to slow an older laptop.
Is VirtualShield VPN safe and still worth using?
None of those weak spots makes VirtualShield unsafe. It is safe enough for everyday use on public Wi-Fi. It uses WireGuard, and the kill switch and IPv6 protection are on by default. Its privacy policy, last updated July 29, 2026, says it keeps no logs of the sites you visit, your IP address or your session lengths.
The problem is proof. No independent audit, transparency report or warrant canary backs that policy, and VirtualShield does not publish who owns or runs the company. It is a US business inside the Five Eyes alliance. Its policy allows it to share data with providers such as Google Analytics and to disclose personal information under subpoena. It stays worth using only if its fast live chat matters more to you than verified privacy.
How we chose these VirtualShield alternatives
We started from VirtualShield's weak points and looked for services that fix them. Every pick needed independent evidence for its no-logs claim, whether an audit, a court case or a police search. It also needed a larger network and apps for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
We then ran each VPN on our own connections, measuring speed loss on nearby and distant servers and testing the major streaming services. We also compared renewal prices, device limits and support response times. The final order follows each VPN's score in our full review, and every pick scored at least 8.4/10.
