Best VPN for Cameroon in 2026

Best VPN for Cameroon in 2026

If you live in Cameroon or are heading there, you want a VPN that keeps your apps reachable when social media gets restricted, protects your data on mobile networks, and is legal to use. Here is the short answer. No Cameroonian law bans personal VPN use. Our top pick is NordVPN, which pairs audited no-logs privacy with one-tap Obfuscated Servers and physical servers in South Africa and France. Proton VPN ties it on score and is the better choice if you want to start free.

One limit applies to every service here. A VPN helps while the network is up, but none can connect once the internet itself is cut off. We ranked the five by our scores, which come from our full reviews and our testing for this page, then checked every provider's server list for what it offers near Cameroon.

Why you need a VPN in Cameroon

A VPN in Cameroon does two jobs: it keeps blocked apps reachable while the network is up, and it adds privacy and security on mobile data and public Wi-Fi. Most people connect by phone. DataReportal counts 12.6 million internet users, a 41.9% penetration rate. It also counts 29.0 million cellular connections on networks run by MTN Cameroon, Orange Cameroon, state-owned Camtel and Nexttel.

Blocks here tend to target apps rather than the whole internet. During the 2025 post-election blocks, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and Telegram timed out at the TLS handshake while everything else stayed up. That is exactly the kind of block a VPN tunnel gets around, because the network only sees an encrypted connection to a server abroad.

No pick has a physical server inside Cameroon, so every connection hops abroad. Yaounde and Douala have decent 4G, but coverage drops outside the big cities and in the Anglophone regions, so a light, fast protocol matters.

The best VPNs for Cameroon, reviewed

All five have audited no-logs policies and apps for all major platforms, including Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. The speed and streaming results come from our full reviews, not from tests run inside Cameroon.

NordVPN - best overall for Cameroon

NordVPN scores 9.0 out of 10 in our NordVPN review, tying Proton VPN for the top score. It leads because one paid plan covers privacy, speed and blocked apps with no free-tier trade-off. Its server list covers 150 countries, but Cameroon is not one of them. Its Chad, Ghana and Senegal entries are virtual, so the useful routes are 16 physical servers in Johannesburg and 262 in France.

Performance is where NordVPN earned its place on our bench. In our full-review testing, download-speed loss on nearby NordLynx servers averaged around 5 percent. When we switched to the Obfuscated Servers category, which now runs on NordWhisper, we gave up a little more speed for traffic that is harder to spot. There was nothing extra to set up: we picked the category and connected.

Deloitte issued its sixth no-logs assurance report in December 2025. Support answered us promptly and accurately. Basic starts from about $3.49 a month on the 2-year plan, or around $13 to $15 month to month, for 10 devices with a 30-day money-back guarantee. The price climbs sharply after the promotional term, and the mobile city picker hides behind an easy-to-miss three-dot menu.

Proton VPN - best free plan and Stealth protocol

Proton VPN ties NordVPN at 9.0 in our Proton VPN review. Its network spans 149 countries, and it is the only pick with a Cameroon location at all. That entry is a paid Smart Routing location: you get a Cameroonian IP, but the servers sit in Marseille and London. For a shorter real route, Proton runs physical servers in Lagos, Nigeria.

The free plan sets Proton apart. It has no data cap and no ads, and it includes Stealth, the protocol that disguises VPN traffic as ordinary web traffic. You can't pick a country on Free, though. It connects one device to one of 10 auto-chosen countries, none in Africa, and free servers get crowded at peak hours.

In our testing the default Smart protocol sometimes struggled to connect. Selecting WireGuard or OpenVPN by hand fixed most of those cases. When it did not, we opened Settings → Protocol and chose Stealth, and the connection went through. Our guide to whether Proton VPN works in China explains how Stealth behaves on heavily filtered networks.

Securitum completed Proton's fifth annual no-logs audit in May 2026. VPN Plus costs from about $3.49 a month on the 2-year plan or $9.99 month to month, for 10 devices. The 30-day refund is prorated, and email support replies take about two days.

Surfshark - best value, unlimited devices

If Proton is the free-plan choice, Surfshark is the value play. At $2.49 a month on the 2-year plan with unlimited devices, one subscription covers a whole household. It scores 8.6 in our Surfshark review and runs servers in 100 countries. Its African list includes Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, but not Cameroon.

Setup took us under five minutes from download to a connected server. Camouflage mode, which switches on automatically with OpenVPN, and NoBorders mode both target restricted networks. On heavily restrictive connections, though, we saw both drop and fail to reconnect, and they held up best on OpenVPN over TCP. Finding a good server took some trial and error.

Live chat answered accurately in under a minute. Deloitte verified the no-logs policy in 2023 and again in June 2025. Month to month it costs around $13 to $16, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

CyberGhost - easiest for first-timers

CyberGhost is the simplest app on this list, and the only pick with no obfuscation or stealth mode. That makes it the weakest choice if a network starts filtering VPN traffic during a social media block. What it offers instead is ease: on mobile, selecting a server connects you automatically.

Streaming is where it shone in our full-review testing. On nearby streaming servers, HD and 4K streams started quickly without buffering. Switching locations briefly dropped the tunnel before the new connection settled, and speeds varied more between servers than with the top picks. It scores 8.4 in our CyberGhost review.

The closest physical options are 57 servers in Johannesburg and 10 in Nairobi, while its Lagos servers are virtual. It starts from about $2.19 a month on the 2-year plan, or $12.99 month to month, and its 45-day money-back guarantee on long plans is the most generous here. The cap of 7 devices runs out quickly in a big household.

ExpressVPN - most consistent connections

Where CyberGhost wins on ease, ExpressVPN wins on steadiness. In our full-review testing it held roughly 90 to 95 percent of base download speed and stayed steady through 4K streaming. When our phone moved between Wi-Fi and mobile data, Lightway carried the connection across smoothly with low battery use. Obfuscation is always on, so there is nothing to configure on a restricted network.

We rate it 8.2 for Cameroon (our ExpressVPN review has the full test), and location is its weak spot. It covers 113 countries, none of them Cameroon. Its Nigeria location is virtual and hosted in Spain, so Johannesburg and France are the realistic choices. A February 2025 KPMG examination backs its no-logs claims.

The apps are among the most beginner-friendly we have used, with few advanced settings. Basic costs $2.99 a month on the 2-year plan for 10 devices (14 on Pro). It then autorenews at $99.95 a year, making it pricier than rivals over time.

Internet shutdowns and censorship in Cameroon

Cameroon has cut the internet before, with blocks ranging from regional blackouts to targeted bans on social apps. Freedom House's Cameroon assessment rates the country 15/100, Not Free.

The Anglophone region shutdowns

In mid-January 2017, the government cut internet access in the Anglophone North-West and South-West regions after strikes by teachers, lawyers and students. Access stayed off until April 2017, about three months, and returned after international pressure. Access Now calls the 2017 shutdown in the North-West and South-West regions one of the longest recorded in Africa.

A second, narrower block began in October 2017 after renewed protests. Rather than the whole internet, it cut social media and messaging apps, including Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. The block was still in place in late January 2018.

A map of Cameroon with the North-West and South-West regions shaded, marking the area cut off from the internet between January and April 2017.

Social media blocks during elections and unrest

Before the presidential election on October 12, 2025, the #KeepItOn coalition urged MTN Cameroon, Orange Cameroon, Camtel and the regulator to keep the internet on. A significant nationwide connectivity disruption still began on October 23, 2025, amid post-election protests.

OONI's measurements of the 2025 blocks recorded TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and Telegram blocked from October 31 to November 5. The most interference showed up on Orange (AS36912), Camtel and NEWTELNET, while YouTube stayed reachable on most of the 12 networks tested. VPN websites were restricted too, with anomalies surging from November 1. Proton VPN's site was among those blocked. Proton logged Cameroon signups at 3000% above baseline on November 5.

What a VPN can and cannot do during a shutdown

No VPN restores access during a full network shutdown. When the network itself is cut, as in the North-West and South-West in 2017, there is nothing for the VPN to run over. A VPN can get you past app-level blocks like those in October 2017 and 2025, but only while the underlying connection is up.

Watch out

Install and test your VPN before tension builds. VPN provider websites were blocked alongside social media in 2025, so downloading an app during a block can fail.

No Cameroonian law bans personal VPN use. There is no VPN-specific law, so legality rests on the absence of a ban rather than an explicit permission. We found no case of anyone prosecuted for using a VPN.

What you post is a different matter. Law No. 2010/012 on cybersecurity and cybercriminality penalises spreading information "that cannot be verified", with up to four years in prison cited for false information. A journalist was arrested under it in 2018 over a tweet. Law No. 2014/028 on terrorism is tried in military courts, and at least five journalists have been charged under it. A VPN encrypts your traffic, but it does not change what is legal to say.

Which protocol works best on MTN and Orange networks?

A WireGuard-based protocol is the best everyday choice on any Cameroonian network, with obfuscation switched on only when blocks start. We found no published VPN tests on individual operators, so we won't claim one protocol does better on MTN than on Orange.

WireGuard is the fastest and most battery-efficient protocol on local mobile data or an eSIM, and NordVPN's NordLynx is built on it. Our explainer on how WireGuard works covers why it is so light. Your base connection is the bottleneck far more often than the VPN.

The 2025 blocks filtered apps and websites by name during the TLS handshake. When that starts, switch on the obfuscated mode: Obfuscated Servers on NordVPN, Camouflage or NoBorders on Surfshark, or Stealth on Proton VPN. ExpressVPN does it automatically. Our guide on how to bypass a VPN blocker goes further.

Tip

If a VPN stops connecting, change the protocol to WireGuard or IKEv2, or try a different server location. One of those usually restores a reliable connection.

How to set up a VPN in Cameroon on your phone

Set it up before you need it, ideally before you travel. Our guide on how to use a VPN on Android covers the basics in more depth.

  1. Install the app from the Play Store or App Store. If the store or provider site is unreachable, Proton offers an Android APK direct from its website.
  2. Open the app's settings and choose WireGuard (NordLynx on NordVPN, Lightway on ExpressVPN).
  3. Turn on the kill switch so nothing leaks if the tunnel drops.
  4. Connect to France for French-language services or South Africa for a closer African route.
  5. Leave the VPN on as you move between mobile data and hotel Wi-Fi to avoid unprotected gaps.

Should you use a free VPN in Cameroon?

Most free VPNs are a poor fit. They get crowded, cap data or speed, and some monetise user data.

Proton VPN's free plan is the safe exception, with no data cap and Stealth included. The trade-offs are one device and no choice of country. Our roundup of the best free VPNs compares it with other no-cost options.

Streaming and local content from Cameroon

Paris and Marseille servers suit French-language services, and every pick has physical servers there. For US or UK libraries, connect to a server in that country. CyberGhost's streaming servers, labelled by service, are the easiest route for first-timers.

From abroad, Proton VPN's paid Smart Routing location is the only way among our picks to get a Cameroonian IP address, though it is served from Europe rather than from inside the country.

How we tested VPNs for Cameroon

We ranked the five by the scores from our full reviews, where we measure speed loss on nearby servers, check streaming and contact support. For this guide we also sorted each provider's locations near Cameroon into physical or virtual.

That check changed how we read the lists. Most "neighbouring country" servers, such as Chad, Gabon, Congo and Nigeria on several providers, are virtual locations hosted in Europe. They give a regional IP without a shorter route, so France and South Africa are the realistic physical choices. We then weighed obfuscation, audit history, device limits and pricing.

FAQ

Is using a VPN legal in Cameroon?
Yes for personal use, since nothing bans it. Cameroon's 2022 accession to the Budapest Convention on cybercrime covers cross-border cooperation on cybercrime and says nothing about VPN use.
Can a VPN help during an internet shutdown in Cameroon?
Only while some connection remains. Around elections and unrest, throttling and partial slowdowns tend to come first, especially in the Anglophone regions. A VPN can't make a throttled line faster, but it keeps blocked apps reachable while data still flows.
Which VPN has the best free plan for Cameroon?
Proton VPN. If you would rather try a paid service, ExpressVPN has a 7-day trial through the mobile app stores, and CyberGhost offers 24 hours on Windows and macOS, 3 days on Android and 7 days on iOS.
Will a VPN slow my connection on MTN or Orange?
A little, mostly through distance, so Europe servers add more delay than Johannesburg. Surfshark's latency jumped even on nearby servers, which shows in calls but not in browsing, and Proton's upload fell off sharply on distant servers.
Can I get a Cameroon IP address from abroad?
Only through Proton VPN's paid plans. Its Gabon and Congo locations are hosted in London and its Chad location in Marseille, so those are regional IPs from Europe too.
Should I install a VPN before traveling to Cameroon?
Yes, before you land. Buy direct if you want the vendor's money-back guarantee, because ExpressVPN subscriptions bought in the iOS or Android app are refunded by Apple or Google instead.
