Best VPN for Chad in 2026

Best VPN for Chad

Need to reach WhatsApp, Facebook or your bank from Chad without worrying about the next platform block? NordVPN is our top pick. It ties Proton VPN at 9.0/10, and its virtual Chad servers support both WireGuard and obfuscation. We found no law that bans personal VPN use in Chad, but authorities have blocked social media and cut the internet around political events. For each provider, we checked obfuscation, WireGuard support, nearby server routes and independent no-logs audits before ranking it.

The Best VPNs for Chad, Reviewed

NordVPN - best overall

NordVPN is the only pick here that pairs a Chadian IP with obfuscation on the same location. Its 2 virtual Chad servers, labelled N'Djamena, support NordLynx (its WireGuard-based protocol) and NordWhisper obfuscation. They sit outside the country, so they won't shorten your route.

In our testing, download-speed loss averaged around 5 percent on nearby NordLynx servers. Switching to obfuscation needed no extra setup: we picked the Obfuscated Servers category and connected. Those servers gave up a little speed for their disguise. With 262 servers in France alone, NordVPN has a strong fallback from Chad.

The mobile app feels busy at first, and city selection hides behind a three-dot menu. Prices also climb sharply after the promo term. Our NordVPN review covers its 150-country network and December 2025 Deloitte no-logs audit.

Proton VPN - best for privacy

Proton VPN matches NordVPN's score and beats it on free access. Its Chad entry is a Smart Routing location hosted in Marseille, and only paid plans can use it.

Stealth is the feature we'd lean on from a restrictive network, and it works on the free plan too. To turn it on, open Settings → Protocol and choose Stealth. When the Smart protocol struggled to connect, we got through by manually selecting WireGuard or OpenVPN, then Stealth. Download speed held up well on nearby servers, while upload fell off on distant ones.

Proton also runs physical servers in Nigeria and South Africa. Support is slower than at rival services, with email replies taking about two days. Refunds are prorated. Our Proton VPN review covers its Swiss jurisdiction.

Surfshark - best value

Surfshark trades some polish for price and scale. Unlimited simultaneous connections mean one plan covers a whole household. Setup took under five minutes from download to a connected server.

Its Camouflage and NoBorders modes hide VPN traffic, but they have limits. On heavily restrictive networks, we saw both modes drop the connection and then fail to reconnect. They held up best on OpenVPN over TCP, so set that protocol first. Latency also jumped on nearby servers, which we noticed in calls but not in browsing.

Surfshark has no Chad location; its African servers include Nigeria and South Africa. More in our Surfshark review.

CyberGhost - best for beginners

CyberGhost is the easiest app on this list and the weakest on censorship. It has no obfuscation or stealth mode, so it is the last pick to rely on if a network starts filtering VPN traffic.

On mobile, the app connects as soon as you pick a server. Speeds varied more between servers and sessions than with the other four picks. In our macOS testing, the app briefly showed a "no internet" message and the connection dropped when we switched servers.

Its closest African options are physical servers in Nairobi and 57 in Johannesburg. The 45-day refund window is the longest here. See our CyberGhost review.

ExpressVPN - best for streaming

ExpressVPN costs more than Proton over time, but it asks the least of you before connecting. Obfuscation is always on, so there is nothing to configure on a restricted network.

In our testing, speeds held roughly 90 to 95 percent of baseline download speed during 4K streaming. Its Lightway protocol handled a phone switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data smoothly, with low battery use. That matters on patchy 4G. ExpressVPN and NordVPN were also the most consistent at loading Netflix and BBC iPlayer through European servers.

It has no Chad location, and Johannesburg is its nearest physical African server. Basic renews at $99.95 a year, as our ExpressVPN review explains.

We found no law that bans personal VPN use in Chad. Legality rests on the absence of a ban rather than an explicit permission. Authorities have also blocked social media and ordered shutdowns.

Chad's main cybercrime law, Law 009/PR/2015, covers offences such as illegal access. Published summaries of it do not mention VPNs, and we found no case of anyone prosecuted for using one. Courts have offered little help against blocks: a complaint against Airtel and Tigo over the social media block was dismissed as unfounded in October 2020.

Freedom House rates Chad 15/100 and Not Free in its 2026 report, and RSF ranks it 93 out of 180 for press freedom. A VPN keeps your browsing private, but it does not change what local law allows you to post.

Why You Need a VPN in Chad

A VPN in Chad is mainly protection against platform blocks. From March 28, 2018 to July 13, 2019, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Viber were blocked on the main mobile networks. People used VPNs to get around a 16-month block on social media. Rights groups counted 911 days of disruptions between the 2016 and 2021 presidential elections.

Most people get online by phone. Only 13.2% of the population used the internet in October 2025, and 4G reaches about 36% of people, mostly in towns. A VPN adds some data overhead on costly mobile plans. It also adds an extra layer of protection on hotel Wi-Fi, as our guide on whether a VPN protects you on public Wi-Fi explains. Our Cameroon VPN guide covers similar limits next door.

Watch out

A VPN cannot restore a full shutdown. When traffic fell to about 20% of normal on February 28, 2024, and when an October 2024 fiber cut left Chad offline for at least 10 days, no VPN could connect.

How We Chose the Best VPNs for Chad

We ranked these five VPNs by our scores for this page, which start from our HTS review scores, then checked how each one fits Chad. Obfuscation came first, because it disguises VPN traffic as ordinary web traffic when a network interferes. Next was the WireGuard protocol, the fastest and most battery-efficient option on local mobile data.

Server proximity came third. No pick runs a physical server inside Chad, so every connection hops abroad. France, Germany and the Netherlands are the usual choices, with Johannesburg or Lagos as African alternatives. Finally, we wanted a recent independent no-logs audit, in which an outside firm checks that the provider keeps no record of your activity.

How to Set Up a VPN in Chad

Most VPNs run no servers inside Chad. NordVPN's Chad servers and Proton's paid Chad location give you a Chadian IP for local sites, but both are virtual and route traffic abroad.

  1. Pay for and install the VPN before you arrive, then test WhatsApp and Google on it.
  2. Open Settings → Protocol and choose WireGuard (NordLynx on NordVPN) for everyday use.
  3. Connect to France or Johannesburg for speed, or pick the Chad location for local sites.
  4. Turn on the obfuscated mode if a network interferes, and see our guide on getting past a VPN blocker if that fails.
  5. Run a DNS leak test to confirm your real location stays hidden.

If the VPN stops connecting, switch protocol or server. Keep it on while your phone moves between mobile data and Wi-Fi.

Should You Use a Free VPN in Chad?

A free VPN is a weak choice for Chad. Free services get crowded, cap data or speed, and some make money from user data.

Proton VPN's free plan is the exception. It has no data cap or ads and includes Stealth. However, you can't choose the country, its 10 free locations sit outside Africa, and the Chad location is paid-only. Treat it as a stopgap, or see our best free VPN roundup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which apps and websites are blocked in Chad?
We found no source documenting an app or site blocked in Chad today. WhatsApp was blocked nationwide from July 22, 2020, and social media was restricted again in February 2021. Access Now lists Chad among 15 African countries with shutdowns in 2025, but gives no dates.
Does a VPN work during internet shutdowns in Chad?
Only when the block targets apps rather than the whole network. During the 2020 WhatsApp block, people reached the app through VPNs. In the same period, the internet was also cut or slowed in parts of the country until August 18, 2020, and no VPN fixes that.
Which server location should I connect to from Chad?
Try a European server and an African one, because routing can make France faster than Johannesburg. For banking, connect to a server in your home country and keep two-factor authentication on, since banks can flag logins from unfamiliar locations.
Will a VPN slow down my connection in Chad?
Usually your mobile network is the bottleneck, not the VPN. ARCEP's 2025 audit scored Moov Africa 123.86/200 and Airtel 98.35/200 for service quality. Messaging stays workable over a VPN, while streaming struggles. Our guide on how much a VPN slows your internet explains why.
How can I pay for a VPN in Chad?
Pay online before you travel, because cards are rarely accepted outside major hotels. NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN and Surfshark take cards and PayPal, and most also take cryptocurrency. Proton even accepts cash by post.

Final Thoughts

NordVPN is the best VPN for Chad, thanks to obfuscated Chad servers and fast NordLynx speeds. Proton VPN suits privacy-first users who want a free fallback. Surfshark covers large households, CyberGhost fits beginners who mostly need protection on public Wi-Fi, and ExpressVPN is the easiest choice for streaming.
