VyprVPN still does two things well. Its Chameleon protocol gets past VPN blocks on restrictive networks, and it owns every server it runs. NordVPN is our top pick to replace it, with Proton VPN as the privacy pick and Private Internet Access as the budget pick.
The gaps are specific. The network has stayed at 700+ servers. The only independent no-logs audit dates from 2018, and a 2023 move to Texas-based Certida took the service out of Switzerland and put it under US jurisdiction. Streaming is patchy, the plan stops at 10 devices, and several rivals now offer more for less. We score VyprVPN 6.8/10 in our VyprVPN review, and every alternative below scores 8.4 or higher.
VyprVPN Alternatives Compared
NordVPN and Proton VPN tie at the top on our scores, but each pick offers a different trade-off against VyprVPN. VyprVPN sits in the last row as the baseline. Prices are introductory long-plan rates unless noted, and most of them move with promotions.

The Best VyprVPN Alternatives in 2026
Each pick below fixes a specific VyprVPN weak spot, and the list is ranked by our review scores.
1. NordVPN: Best VyprVPN Alternative Overall
NordVPN replaces VyprVPN's network of 700+ servers with more than 9,000, and that scale shows up in speed. Speed is a big part of why it scores 9.0/10 in our NordVPN review. On nearby servers we lost only single-digit percentages of speed, and connections held without unexpected drops. When we lined NordVPN up against VyprVPN location by location, NordVPN came out faster in every one. Picking a city took a little learning, because the desktop map needs zooming before city-level servers appear, so we switched to the list view and found it quicker.
Privacy is the second gain. NordVPN is based in Panama. Its sixth Deloitte no-logs assurance engagement finished in December 2025, and the company announced it in February 2026. For restrictive networks, NordVPN's Obfuscated Servers now run on NordWhisper, a protocol that hides VPN traffic inside ordinary web traffic.
Pros
- Double VPN, Meshnet and Threat Protection Pro in one app
- RAM-only servers and post-quantum encryption
- Same 10-device allowance as VyprVPN, so nothing is lost
Cons
- The introductory two-year rate moves with promotions and renews higher
2. Proton VPN: Best for Privacy and Swiss Jurisdiction
Where NordVPN wins on speed, Proton VPN wins back what VyprVPN gave up in 2023: a home in Switzerland. Proton published its fifth consecutive annual no-logs audit by Securitum on June 19, 2026. That is eight years newer than VyprVPN's only audit.
Getting started was quick. Installation took about two minutes on our machines, and the apps explain each setting in plain language. Support was the slower part: when we emailed a question, the reply took about two days, and live chat is not staffed around the clock. Proton VPN costs $9.99 on monthly billing or about $3.49/month on the two-year plan, which renews at a different price. It scores 9.0/10 in our Proton VPN review.
Pros
- Secure Core multihop routing through privacy-friendly countries
- Stealth protocol on every plan, Free included
- Open-source apps
Cons
- NetShield and port forwarding are paid-only
- The Free plan picks your server location for you
3. ExpressVPN: Easiest Switch for Speed and Streaming
ExpressVPN is the pick if streaming is what pushed you away from VyprVPN. We streamed Netflix libraries in several countries, plus ESPN+ and Hulu, without issues. We also checked the kill switch the hard way: when a server timed out and when we changed networks mid-session, Network Lock fired correctly both times.
The easier switch comes from obfuscation that applies automatically on supported platforms, with no special servers or toggles. ExpressVPN has servers in 113 countries, sits in the British Virgin Islands under Kape Technologies, and passed a KPMG assessment of its TrustedServer setup and privacy policy in June 2025. Basic starts at $4.99/month for the first 15 months. ExpressVPN changed its featured term and intro price within weeks, though, so the starting rate depends on the current promotion. We score it 8.8/10 in our ExpressVPN review.
Pros
- Lightway protocol with post-quantum encryption
- Router apps and Aircove routers, where VyprVPN needs manual router setup
- 10, 12 or 14 devices depending on tier
Cons
- Costs more than NordVPN and Surfshark on comparable terms
- Basic renews at $99.95 a year
4. Surfshark: Best for Unlimited Devices
ExpressVPN raises the device cap to 14 at most; Surfshark removes VyprVPN's 10-device cap entirely. We set it up on Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV, and the native apps made each install painless.
One setting deserves attention after install. The kill switch is off by default, and on IPv6 networks we occasionally saw IPv6 addresses leak. Turn it on first. Surfshark passed Deloitte no-logs checks in 2023 and again in 2025. The Starter plan costs $2.49/month on the two-year plan ($67.23 for the first 27 months), under VyprVPN's $3, then renews at $79 a year. We score it 8.6/10 in our Surfshark review.
Pros
- CleanWeb ad blocking
- Bypasser split tunneling
- Camouflage mode plus NoBorders for restrictive networks
Cons
- P2P servers are not labeled, so you have to type "p2p" into the server search
- Camouflage mode works on OpenVPN only, not WireGuard or IKEv2
5. Mullvad VPN: Best for Anonymity
If Surfshark covers more devices, Mullvad asks less about you. VyprVPN wants a name at sign-up and takes credit cards, PayPal and UnionPay but no cryptocurrency. Mullvad generates a random 16-digit account number, and that number is the only login. Sign-up took us seconds, and we never gave an email address.
On local servers we lost only around 6 percent of our speed, but distant servers slowed downloads noticeably. Streaming was hit or miss, with some servers reaching Netflix and others detected. Mullvad is based in Sweden and completed its fourth Cure53 infrastructure audit in 2024. A 2023 Swedish police raid found no user data. Mullvad costs a flat EUR 5 a month on any term, more than VyprVPN's two-year rate. Its anonymity and audit record are why it still scores 8.5/10 in our Mullvad VPN review.
Pros
- Pay by cash, crypto, card or PayPal
- DAITA and multihop built in
- Four obfuscation methods: QUIC, LWO, Shadowsocks and UDP-over-TCP
Cons
- 5 devices, half of VyprVPN's allowance
- Email-only support, with replies in hours rather than minutes
- 14-day refund window, and cash payments are excluded
6. Private Internet Access: Best Cheap VyprVPN Alternative
Mullvad charges one flat rate, and PIA goes the other way with deep long-plan discounts. Its three-year plan with bonus months works out to about $1.89/month, against VyprVPN's $72 for two years. PIA rotates its long-term deal price and bonus months, so the intro rate changes from week to week. The one-year plan costs $47.88.
Speed held up locally, with about 4 percent loss on nearby servers, but slowed over long distances. The desktop app's long settings list felt like a lot at first, then became easy once we had tuned it. Streaming was the weak spot: US and UK Netflix did not unblock, and Disney+ and Hulu detected the VPN. PIA shares VyprVPN's US jurisdiction under Kape Technologies, but it completed its third Deloitte no-logs audit in December 2025. We score it 8.4/10 in our Private Internet Access review.
Pros
- Unlimited simultaneous devices
- Open-source apps and a native Linux app
- Port forwarding, outside US servers
Cons
- Weak for streaming
- Obfuscation means turning on Multi-Hop and picking a Shadowsocks proxy country
7. CyberGhost: Best for Streaming and Torrenting on a Budget
CyberGhost ties PIA on our score, but in place of PIA's long settings list it offers a simpler, beginner-friendly app with dedicated streaming and torrenting servers. Its torrenting-optimized servers cover 87 of its 100-plus countries. We set a smart rule to launch CyberGhost when our torrent client opened, and it connected to our chosen server automatically.
Speed is less steady. Nearby servers were inconsistent, and long-distance servers dropped by about 44 to 59 percent. CyberGhost is based in Romania under Kape Technologies and completed its third Deloitte no-logs audit in late 2025. The two-year plan works out to about $1.99/month ($51.74 upfront). Monthly billing costs $12.99. We score it 8.4/10 in our CyberGhost review.
Pros
- 45-day money-back guarantee on two-year and six-month plans
- NoSpy servers and RAM-only servers
- Quick setup
Cons
- No obfuscation, so nothing replaces Chameleon
- 7 devices, three fewer than VyprVPN
- The Windows app looks dated next to the mobile apps
Which VyprVPN Alternative Beats Chameleon for Censorship?
Of the seven picks, ExpressVPN is the closest replacement for Chameleon, because its obfuscation turns itself on with nothing to configure. Chameleon scrambles OpenVPN packet metadata to get past deep packet inspection, and in our use it got through VPN blocks where standard protocols were detected. The cost is speed. Chameleon rides on OpenVPN. On VyprVPN's US servers, a 500 Mbps line fell to roughly 24-53 Mbps on OpenVPN, against about 210-301 Mbps on WireGuard. ExpressVPN's automatic obfuscation was faster than Chameleon, and in China, VyprVPN connections often failed even with Chameleon switched on.
The other picks need more care. Proton's Stealth protocol is available on every plan, Free included, though it connected in China only intermittently. NordVPN was reliable in China for years, but connection drops are now common. Surfshark failed there out of the box and worked most reliably with NoBorders and Camouflage mode together. Mullvad's four obfuscation methods work only inside its own app. CyberGhost has no obfuscation and was blocked in China almost immediately. Our best VPN for China guide goes deeper on that one country.
Why Look for a VyprVPN Alternative?
VyprVPN has stood still on four things that matter in any VPN comparison: network size, ownership, audits and streaming.
Server Network That Stopped Growing
VyprVPN runs 700+ servers, all owned by VyprVPN, in clusters on six continents, with over 300,000 IP addresses. That self-ownership is a privacy plus, but the footprint is small next to NordVPN's 9,000+ or Proton's 20,000+. VyprVPN counts cities and countries differently across its own pages, and some of its locations are virtual, so we put the country total at "about 70". It also does not say which ones are virtual, so a server labeled for one country can sit somewhere else.
Ownership Change and Jurisdiction
VyprVPN is now owned and operated by Certida, LLC, a US business headquartered in Texas. The move from Switzerland-based Golden Frog came in 2023, and VyprVPN's Certida FAQ confirms Certida as the parent company. VyprVPN's privacy policy now redirects to Certida's own policy page. The service still says it keeps no traffic logs, but those promises now sit under US law rather than Swiss law.
Aging Audit Record
VyprVPN has one independent no-logs assessment, and it is from 2018. VyprVPN's 2018 Leviathan audit report was prepared for Golden Frog, and both the final report and the retest are dated November 9, 2018. Leviathan found a limited number of identifying logs from "inadvertent configuration mistakes", including kill-switch API logs that held user IP addresses. All three High and three Medium findings were marked fixed on retest. Every alternative above has an audit from 2024 or later.
Inconsistent Streaming and Speeds
Netflix works only on specific VyprVPN servers, and finding the one that reaches the US library often meant asking support. Streaming sites such as Netflix and Disney+ can detect the wrong country, and Google services sometimes read VyprVPN IPs as coming from Iran. Streaming topped out at 1080p in practice. Distant servers slowed to a crawl with sharply higher latency, which makes VyprVPN a poor choice for gaming. On Windows, ping jumped from single digits to around 94 ms with the VPN on, and upload speed dropped by about three quarters.
Are There Free VyprVPN Alternatives?
No, not among full-featured VPNs, with one exception worth knowing: Proton VPN Free. VyprVPN has no free version, and its mobile trial has come and gone, so the 30-day refund is the dependable way to test it. Proton's free plan has no data limits, no ads and no credit card requirement. It covers 1 device with servers in 10 countries, picks the location for you, and blocks P2P and streaming. We saw no throttling on the free plan. That makes it a fair internet privacy option for browsing, but not a replacement for a paid plan.
Instead of settling for a free VPN, test a paid one inside its refund window. CyberGhost gives 45 days on its long plans, most picks here give 30 days, and Mullvad gives 14.
When to Stay with VyprVPN
Not everyone needs to leave, though. Stay if Chameleon already gets you online on a restrictive network and you torrent. VyprVPN allows torrenting on every server and does not throttle P2P traffic. Setup is quick, and the apps are easy to navigate, with server search and per-server ping values. The two-year plan at $72 is also fairly priced. Leave if you rely on an iPhone, because the iOS app has no kill switch and no split tunneling. Our full VyprVPN review covers the rest of its features.
How to Switch from VyprVPN
Switching is simple if you do it in this order, so you never pay twice or go unprotected.
- Buy the new VPN before you cancel VyprVPN, so your devices are never without protection.
- Inside its refund window, install it on every device and try the things you used VyprVPN for, such as streaming, torrenting or a restrictive network.
- Turn on the kill switch in the new app. Surfshark ships with it off.
- Log in to your VyprVPN account on the website and cancel from the subscriptions section. Inside 30 days of purchase, that gets you a full refund.
- Uninstall the VyprVPN apps. If you set VyprVPN up on a router from its manual firmware guides, replace those settings with your new provider's.
How We Chose These VyprVPN Alternatives
We started from VyprVPN's weak spots and judged each replacement on six criteria: server footprint, audit recency, jurisdiction, obfuscation, price and device cap. A pick had to beat VyprVPN clearly on at least one of them without falling behind on audits. The ranking follows our full review scores, from NordVPN and Proton VPN at 9.0/10 down to PIA and CyberGhost at 8.4/10, against VyprVPN's 6.8/10. Where two picks tied, we put the cheaper all-rounder first, which is why PIA sits ahead of CyberGhost. We then checked each provider's current pricing and audit reports and weighed what we saw on speed, streaming and censorship.

Bottom Line
After all seven reviews, NordVPN is still the alternative we would move to first, but the right second choice depends on why you are leaving. If the Swiss home was VyprVPN's draw, Proton VPN gives it back with a 2026 audit. If Chameleon kept you, ExpressVPN's automatic obfuscation is the closest match. If price is the issue, PIA and Surfshark cost less on long plans and drop the 10-device cap entirely.
