The 7 Best DuckDuckGo VPN Alternatives in 2026

The 7 Best DuckDuckGo VPN Alternatives in 2026

DuckDuckGo VPN is simple, private and audited, but you can't buy it on its own. It only comes inside the DuckDuckGo subscription, alongside AI and identity tools you may never use. It also covers just five devices, runs on a network that leans heavily on North America and Europe, and leaves out the advanced settings that power users expect.

If any of that is a sticking point, a standalone VPN will give you more for the same money or less. Our top pick is Proton VPN, which keeps DuckDuckGo's privacy stance while adding a far bigger network and a genuinely usable free plan.

How we picked these DuckDuckGo VPN alternatives

Before the picks, here is how we chose them. We started with the question a DuckDuckGo subscriber actually asks: what would I gain by paying for a VPN on its own? Every service had to beat, or at least match, DuckDuckGo VPN on privacy, and then offer something the subscription doesn't.

We weighed five things. First came an independently audited no-logs policy, and we note plainly where a provider has only infrastructure or security audits instead. Second, protocol choice, a working kill switch and leak protection. Third, the size of the server network and how well it handles streaming. Fourth and fifth, price and device limits, set against DuckDuckGo's $9.99 Plus plan and its five-device cap.

Hands-on, we measured download speed loss against an unprotected connection on nearby and distant servers. We also ran DNS and WebRTC leak checks and tried Netflix and the other big streaming libraries on every service that advertises streaming. The order you see is simply the score each VPN earned in our full review, highest first. Where two services tied, we placed the one that better fits a typical DuckDuckGo user first.

1. Proton VPN - best overall privacy-first alternative

Proton VPN keeps everything that makes DuckDuckGo VPN appealing, including a strict no-logs stance and a clean app, then removes nearly every limit. It scores 9.0 in our Proton VPN review, the joint-highest of any VPN on this list.

The network is the first big upgrade. Proton runs 20,798 servers in 149 countries, against DuckDuckGo's 47 cities. VPN Plus covers 10 devices instead of five, and it costs about $2.99 a month on the 2-year plan ($71.76 upfront, renewing at $6.99 a month equivalent) or $9.99 month to month. Proton AG is based in Switzerland, and its fifth consecutive annual no-logs audit by Securitum was published in 2026.

Speed held up well on our connection. Download speed dropped by only about 8 percent on nearby servers, and 4K video loaded in under four seconds without buffering. The paid plan unlocked more than 20 Netflix libraries, and we saw no IPv6, DNS or WebRTC leaks across dozens of countries. The advanced tools cost some speed. Secure Core multi-hop routing took roughly a third of our throughput, and the Stealth protocol ran about 10-35 percent slower than a standard connection.

Proton also has a free plan with no ads and no data cap. It is limited to one device, a small pool of servers and no streaming. The number of free countries also varies by account, because Proton assigns them from a rotating pool.

Pros

  • NetShield blocks ads, trackers and malware
  • Open-source, audited apps
  • Port forwarding and Tor over VPN included

Cons

  • Live chat runs 9 a.m. to midnight Central European Time, not 24/7
  • Refunds within 30 days are prorated to unused time

2. NordVPN - best for speed and features

Tied with Proton at 9.0 in our NordVPN review, NordVPN is the pick if you care more about raw speed and a full toolbox than about a Swiss address.

NordVPN runs 9,300+ servers, and its footprint reaches roughly 137 countries once you count virtual locations. The Basic plan costs $3.49 a month on the 2-year plan, $5.49 on the 1-year plan and $14.99 month to month, and it covers 10 devices. The company is based in Panama. Its sixth no-logs assurance engagement, carried out by Deloitte between November 10 and December 12, 2025, was announced in February 2026.

In our testing, download speed dipped around 7 percent, with no buffering in 4K streams and no stutter on video calls. Connections stayed stable without disconnects, and DNS and WebRTC leak tests came back clean. It unblocked Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video, Disney+, ESPN+ and YouTube TV, and we didn't need to hunt for a special streaming server.

The extras go well beyond anything in the DuckDuckGo subscription. Threat Protection Pro blocks ads, trackers and malware, Meshnet links your own devices, and there are apps for Apple TV, Fire TV and Android TV. Double VPN is the weak spot, since it slowed our downloads by about 80 percent and uses fixed server pairs you can't choose.

Pros

  • Onion Over VPN and split tunneling included
  • Linux app, which DuckDuckGo lacks
  • Dark Web Monitor built in

Cons

  • Kill switch ships with aggressive defaults that need adjusting
  • Obfuscated servers exist in only about 16 countries
  • Month-to-month price is steep

3. ExpressVPN - best for streaming and ease of use

ExpressVPN trades a little speed for the most polished experience here, and it suits anyone who wants to install a VPN and never think about it again.

It has servers in 113 countries, and plans are tiered by device count: Basic covers 10, Advanced 12 and Pro 14. Expect to pay from about $3 a month on the 2-year Basic plan, though the promotional rate moves with running deals, and monthly pricing depends on the tier you choose. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee for new users. The company sits in the British Virgin Islands, and KPMG's 2025 assessment of its privacy policy and TrustedServer claims backs its no-logs promise.

Download speeds dropped by roughly 37-39 percent on our Mac and Windows machines, a bigger cut than NordVPN, yet still fast enough for 4K streaming and gaming. That speed gap is the main reason it sits at 8.8 in our ExpressVPN review, just behind the top two. It unblocked international Netflix libraries and worked with Hulu and ESPN+ on iOS. The Network Lock kill switch tripped only rarely under heavy daily use, the connection held steady otherwise, and DNS and WebRTC leak tests passed.

DuckDuckGo VPN has no router or TV support, while ExpressVPN covers Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV and routers. MediaStreamer Smart DNS handles devices that can't run an app. Its Lightway protocol and RAM-only TrustedServer setup round out the package.

Pros

  • Servers in all 50 US states
  • Split tunneling plus ad and tracker blocking
  • Linux app, unlike DuckDuckGo

Cons

  • Costs more than NordVPN and Surfshark for comparable terms
  • Email support can take close to 48 hours to reply

4. Surfshark - best value for unlimited devices

Surfshark answers DuckDuckGo's five-device cap more directly than anyone else on this list: it has no cap at all. It scores 8.6 in our Surfshark review, and it is the cheapest paid pick here on a long plan.

The Starter plan costs $2.49 a month on the 2-year plan ($67.23 for the first 27 months), with unlimited simultaneous devices, 4,500+ servers and 100 countries. You get a 30-day money-back guarantee, plus a 7-day free trial if you start on Android, iOS or macOS. Surfshark B.V. is based in the Netherlands, and a second Deloitte no-logs assurance report in 2025 followed its first in 2023.

Performance was less even than NordVPN's. Our download speed losses ranged from about 10 percent on long-distance links to around 30 percent in some Mac runs, and Windows speeds could lag behind. Streaming was a strength, though. It changed Netflix regions without being flagged, and torrenting with Camouflage Mode switched on ran only about 5 percent slower than without the VPN. The kill switch held during connection drops, and Bypasser gave us fine-grained app and site exclusions.

Beyond the VPN, CleanWeb blocks ads and trackers, and MultiHop and post-quantum encryption are available on some platforms.

Pros

  • RAM-only servers
  • Alternative ID for masking your email address
  • Apps for Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV

Cons

  • Upload speeds are only passable next to downloads
  • Month-to-month billing costs several times the long-term rate

5. Mullvad VPN - best for anonymous sign-up

If DuckDuckGo's appeal for you was privacy above everything, Mullvad VPN goes further than any other service here, because it never asks who you are.

When we signed up, there was no email field. Mullvad issued a random account number, and we could have paid with cash or crypto as well as card, PayPal or bank wire. The price is a flat EUR 5 a month (about $5.69), with no long-term discounts, 10% off for crypto and a 14-day money-back guarantee that excludes cash payments. There is no free plan or trial. Like DuckDuckGo, it covers 5 devices, and it runs 566 servers in 50 countries and 91 cities from its base in Sweden.

Mullvad has no dedicated no-logs certification. Its evidence is a fourth infrastructure audit by Cure53 in 2024, which found no traffic-anonymity issues, plus 2026 audits of its engine and Android app.

Speed is where it earns much of its 8.5 in our Mullvad VPN review. It was the fastest VPN we measured, with an average download speed loss of about 2 percent, and some nearby servers even tested slightly faster than no VPN at all. The kill switch worked, Lockdown Mode added stricter blocking, and DNS and WebRTC leak tests passed. Streaming was a weak point: Netflix worked in Canada and Australia, but the US and UK libraries were repeatedly blocked. Mullvad is WireGuard-only now, having removed OpenVPN in January 2026.

Pros

  • DAITA traffic-analysis defense and multihop
  • Open-source apps
  • Quantum-resistant tunnels

Cons

  • No setup tutorial and no automatic fastest-server option
  • Email-only support, though replies can come within 15-20 minutes
  • Unreliable for US and UK Netflix

6. Windscribe - best free alternative

Windscribe is the one to try if you would rather not pay for a VPN at all. DuckDuckGo has no free VPN tier, while Windscribe gives you 10GB a month once you confirm an email (2GB without) on unlimited devices, across about 10 countries.

The free plan uses the same encryption as the paid one and includes R.O.B.E.R.T., Windscribe's DNS-level blocker for ads, trackers and malware. If you outgrow it, Pro costs $9.00 a month or $69 a year ($5.75 a month) and opens up more than 69 countries and 112 cities. There is also a Build a Plan option at $1 per location per month, with a $3 minimum. The company is based in Canada.

Windscribe has no dedicated no-logs audit. Instead, Packetlabs audited its RAM-only server stack in June 2024. A Greek criminal case against its co-founder was dismissed in April 2025 for lack of user data, and Dutch authorities who seized a server in February 2026 found no logs.

On Pro, speeds held close to our baseline on nearby servers, at about 92 of 95 Mbps, which helps it tie Mullvad at 8.5 in our Windscribe review. Long routes such as Singapore were another story: a 3GB download that finished in under five minutes on a US server stretched to almost 15 minutes on a distant one. The free servers also saw periodic speed drops of up to 90 percent at busy times. The desktop app has more menus and toggles than most VPNs, and custom R.O.B.E.R.T. rules live in the website account panel rather than the app.

Free VPNs still cost money to run. Stick with a free tier backed by a paid product, such as Windscribe or Proton, rather than an unknown app with no clear business model. Our roundup of the best free VPNs covers the other options we trust.

Pros

  • Wide protocol choice, including Stealth and WStunnel
  • Static IPs available
  • Apps for Linux, TVs and routers

Cons

  • Double Hop needs the desktop app and browser extension on different locations
  • Human ticket replies can take around 18 hours, with no live chat

7. Brave VPN - best if you already use Brave Browser

Brave VPN is the closest like-for-like swap on this list, and that is both its appeal and its problem. Like DuckDuckGo VPN, it is a browser company's add-on, and it scores 6.5 in our Brave VPN review, below DuckDuckGo's own 7.4.

It costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, the same as DuckDuckGo's Plus plan, but you get the VPN on its own and it covers 10 devices instead of five. There is a 7-day free trial. The service runs on 300+ servers across 40+ regions, with apps for Android, Windows, iOS and macOS, and Linux is listed as coming soon. It is powered by Guardian, a company in the United States, and unlinkable purchase tokens mean Brave can't tie your VPN use to your account. Assured carried out independent 2024 security audits of its software and infrastructure.

The trade-offs showed up quickly. Download speeds dropped about 35-40 percent on domestic servers, and Netflix, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer all blocked its servers. There is no protocol toggle, split tunneling, multi-hop or obfuscation, and the protocol it uses depends on your platform. Kill switch support arrived recently and not on every platform, so check it on your own devices.

Its Firewall + VPN mode does block trackers across the whole device, which is a nice extra if you already live in the Brave browser.

Pros

  • City-level server selection
  • Standalone mobile apps as well as the browser toggle

Cons

  • Blocked by Netflix, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer
  • Scores lower than DuckDuckGo VPN overall

What DuckDuckGo VPN gets right, and where it falls short

DuckDuckGo VPN is a good product, and our DuckDuckGo VPN review gives it 7.4 out of 10. It runs on WireGuard, it comes built into the same app as the rest of DuckDuckGo's privacy tools, and it follows a strict no-logging policy. That policy was checked by Securitum in a no-logs audit that ran from October 2025 to January 2026, with the report dated March 2026.

It also performs better than its reputation. On nearby servers, download speeds dropped only about 11-12 percent in our testing, so browsing and HD streaming felt unaffected. It unblocked the US, Canadian, UK and Australian Netflix libraries with no noticeable slowdown once the stream started, and our DNS and WebRTC leak tests came back clean.

What you get with a DuckDuckGo subscription

The bundle is now called the DuckDuckGo subscription, and it comes in two plans. The original subscription, formerly marketed as Privacy Pro, was renamed Plus when a higher Pro tier launched on March 18, 2026. There is no VPN-only plan.

Plus costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Along with the VPN, it includes advanced AI models in Duck.ai, Personal Information Removal and Identity Theft Restoration. The VPN covers up to 5 devices at once on iOS, Android, Mac and Windows, and you reach it through the DuckDuckGo browser rather than a standalone app. The subscription is only sold to residents of the U.S., U.K., E.U. and Canada.

Good to know

DuckDuckGo launched its subscription with the VPN in April 2024, initially in the US only. Help pages still use the old /privacy-pro/ address, so you will see both names online.

Why people look for a DuckDuckGo VPN alternative

The most common reason is simple: you want a VPN, not a bundle. If you have no use for data-broker removal or AI models, you are paying for them anyway.

The network is the next limit. DuckDuckGo lists 47 server locations across 31 countries and says it prioritizes North America and Europe. Choice within a country is coarse, too. The UK, for example, offers only a single location to pick. European and Australian servers cut download speed by about a quarter compared with the US, and latency to the UK rose sharply in our runs.

Uploads were the biggest surprise. Upload speeds fell roughly 70 percent, and past 90 percent on distant servers, which hurts video calls and large uploads.

The app is also deliberately bare. It is WireGuard only, with no protocol choice, speed-test tools or advanced settings to tune the connection. There is no multi-hop, obfuscation, Linux app, or router and TV support. Split tunneling exists but is limited and varies by platform. DuckDuckGo says traffic is blocked automatically if the VPN drops. On iOS, though, our connection occasionally dropped and the app sent a notification rather than giving us much control. Treat it as basic drop protection, not a full, configurable kill switch. Beyond identity-theft help, there is no dedicated VPN support channel either.

What to look for in a DuckDuckGo VPN alternative

A replacement should match what DuckDuckGo VPN does well and fix the gap that made you look elsewhere.

No-logs policy and independent audits

A no-logs policy is only a promise until an outside firm checks it. Look for a dedicated no-logs audit or assurance report, and check the date, because a report from several years ago says little about today's systems. Proton, NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Surfshark all have recent no-logs audits from firms such as Securitum, Deloitte and KPMG.

Security or infrastructure audits are useful too, but they answer a different question. Mullvad, Windscribe and Brave rely on those, and Windscribe adds a court-tested record. Jurisdiction matters as well: DuckDuckGo and Brave's VPN partner are both US companies, while Proton is Swiss and Mullvad is Swedish.

Protocols, kill switch and DNS leak protection

DuckDuckGo gives you WireGuard and nothing else. Most alternatives add a choice of protocols, including obfuscated or stealth options that help on networks that block VPNs. Check that the kill switch is a real, configurable feature, since knowing what a VPN kill switch does makes it clear why a drop notification isn't enough. DNS leak protection should be on by default, and a quick leak test after installing is always worth the minute it takes.

Server locations and streaming

More countries mean more ways to get a nearby, fast server and more streaming libraries. Proton, ExpressVPN and Surfshark each cover 100 or more countries, several times DuckDuckGo's 31. For streaming, NordVPN and ExpressVPN were the most dependable in our testing, while Mullvad and Brave struggled with the big US services.

Price, devices and platforms

Compare the long-term price, but also the renewal price and the month-to-month rate, which can be several times higher. If you protect multiple devices for a household, Surfshark and Windscribe have no device cap, while most others allow 10. Platform support matters too: DuckDuckGo has no Linux, router or TV apps, and every paid alternative here except Brave covers more ground.

A checklist graphic comparing VPN plan features, with rows for no-logs audit, kill switch, device limit, server countries and 2-year price, and ticks against each criterion.

Can you keep using DuckDuckGo search and browser with another VPN?

Yes, and for most people that is the best setup. A VPN and a private search engine do different jobs. The VPN encrypts your traffic and hides it from your internet provider and the local network. DuckDuckGo's search engine and browser handle tracking at the search and browser layer. They block trackers and keep your searches out of the profiles that Big Tech companies build to target ads.

You can keep DuckDuckGo as your default search engine and default browser with any VPN on this list. Just turn off DuckDuckGo's own VPN from the DuckDuckGo browser or the Mac menu bar before you connect the new one, so the two tunnels don't compete.

A phone showing the DuckDuckGo browser open on a search results page while the status bar displays the VPN icon from a separate third-party VPN app.

Private search engines and browsers to pair with your VPN

If you want to move beyond DuckDuckGo entirely, several private search engines don't build a profile of you or sell your data. Brave Search runs its own index and fits naturally with the Brave browser. Startpage serves Google results without passing your identity to Google. Qwant is a European search engine with a privacy focus. Mojeek crawls its own independent index, and SearXNG is an open-source metasearch engine you can host yourself.

On the browser side, the DuckDuckGo browser and Brave both block trackers by default. Pair either one with a VPN from this list and you cover both the network and the browser.

DuckDuckGo VPN alternatives FAQ

Is DuckDuckGo VPN any good?
It is a solid VPN for light use if you already want the rest of the subscription. The DuckDuckGo app is well liked, with ratings of 4.8 on iOS and 4.7 on Android, and signing up for Personal Information Removal asks for little more than your name and the cities you have lived in, not a Social Security number. It is weaker value if the VPN is the only part you need.
Is DuckDuckGo VPN free?
No. The DuckDuckGo search engine and browser are free, but the VPN is only included in a paid subscription, with a 7-day free trial to start. The newer Pro plan costs $19.99 a month and includes the same VPN, adding higher-tier AI models and double Duck.ai usage limits, so there is no reason to pay for Pro just for the VPN.
What do I lose if I cancel the DuckDuckGo subscription?
If you cancel the subscription to switch VPNs, you keep the free search engine and browser but lose Personal Information Removal, Identity Theft Restoration and the advanced Duck.ai models. If you rely on any of those, keep the subscription and simply leave its VPN switched off.
Does incognito mode or a private browser replace a VPN?
No. Incognito mode only stops your browser from saving history on your own device, and your internet provider and network can still see where you connect. A VPN doesn't stop browser fingerprinting either, which you can check with EFF's Cover Your Tracks test. Combining a VPN with a tracker-blocking browser gives you the most coverage.
What does "most private" actually mean for a VPN?
It depends on which risk worries you. Jurisdiction decides which government can compel a provider to hand over data, an independent audit tests whether the no-logs promise holds in practice, and payment anonymity decides whether the account can be tied to you at all. No provider leads on every one of those, so rank them by your own threat. Our guide to the most private VPNs weighs each factor in more depth.
Is a proxy the same as a VPN?
No. A proxy usually reroutes traffic for one app or browser and often doesn't encrypt it, while a VPN encrypts all traffic from your device. We explain the difference between a proxy and a VPN in more detail, including when a proxy is enough.

Final verdict

Proton VPN is the best DuckDuckGo VPN alternative for most people. The runners-up each solve a narrower problem. Choose NordVPN for speed and streaming, ExpressVPN for the easiest setup, Surfshark for a household full of devices, Mullvad for truly anonymous sign-up, and Windscribe if you don't want to pay at all. Brave VPN only makes sense if Brave is already your browser.
