Bitdefender VPN's free tier gives you 200 MB of encrypted traffic per device each day, and it picks the server for you. That covers email and light browsing, but not streaming or an evening on hotel Wi-Fi. If you need more, NordVPN is our best overall alternative, and Proton VPN is the best free option.
We ranked seven alternatives by their HTS review scores and judged each one on the things we check with every VPN: speed loss on nearby and distant servers, kill switch and leak behavior, streaming access, and what you actually pay after the first term.
Why Look for a Bitdefender VPN Alternative?
Bitdefender VPN is a sensible add-on for people already inside Bitdefender's security suite, and our Bitdefender VPN review scores it 7.2/10. The limits appear once you rely on it every day. Bitdefender doesn't run its own servers: the VPN uses Hotspot Shield's Hydra protocol and network, operated by Pango (now Point Wild), alongside WireGuard. The kill switch was the weak spot in our testing, because it could fail to cut traffic when the tunnel dropped, which briefly exposed our real location, and it isn't always on by default.
Free plan data cap
The Basic tier is 200 MB per device, per day, on a server you cannot change. In our testing that allowance ran out after roughly 10 minutes of video, and the app kept prompting us to upgrade. The same capped VPN ships with Bitdefender Antivirus Free and Total Security, so many users hit the limit without ever choosing a VPN.
Premium VPN removes the cap for $6.99 on monthly billing, and Bitdefender's VPN plan page extends it to up to 10 devices and adds a 7-day free trial that needs no credit card. On the annual plan, the first year works out to about $2.50 to $3.33 a month. That rate is promotional and changes with Bitdefender's regional sales; the plan then renews at about $69.99 a year ($5.83 a month).
Fewer advanced features (split tunneling, multi-hop, dedicated IP)
Premium isn't bare, but most of its advanced tools come with limits. App-based split tunneling works only on Windows and Android; on macOS and iOS you can only route websites around the tunnel. Double Hop, Bitdefender's multi-hop mode, is Premium-only, skips macOS, and runs on seven preset country pairs, with up to five custom pairs on Android and iOS. There is no dedicated IP option, no Linux app and no browser extension. Next to the mainstream VPNs below, the settings felt thin in our testing, with fewer toggles to tune.
Streaming and server-choice limits
Bitdefender lists more than 3,000 servers in 100+ countries, although independent counts differ depending on how locations are counted. Free users can't choose any of them. On Premium, we got into Netflix US, UK, Canada and Australia, plus Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max and BBC iPlayer, but access didn't hold steady. A library that loaded in one session could fail on the next, and Netflix and Hulu sometimes detected the VPN outright.
Finding a working server took trial and error, and there's no Smart DNS for devices that can't run the app. Distant servers also sent ping up sharply on Windows, so video calls and gaming felt laggy even when download speed looked acceptable.
Best Bitdefender VPN Alternatives at a Glance
We ranked the picks by their HTS review scores. NordVPN and Proton VPN tie at 9.0/10, so NordVPN takes the overall slot for its streaming reliability and Proton VPN takes the free slot. Long-plan prices are introductory rates, and Bitdefender VPN sits in the last row as the baseline.

1. NordVPN - Best Overall Bitdefender VPN Alternative
NordVPN fixes the two things that bothered us most about Bitdefender VPN: patchy streaming and a kill switch we couldn't fully trust. On nearby servers we lost only single-digit percentages of download and upload speed, and 4K streams played without buffering. Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, Disney+ and HBO Max unblocked reliably. Connections held without unexpected drops, and when the tunnel did fail, the kill switch cut traffic as it should.
The privacy backing is stronger as well. Deloitte has now completed six no-logs assurance engagements for NordVPN, the latest with fieldwork in late 2025, and the company is based in Panama. You also get tools Bitdefender lacks, including a Linux app, obfuscated servers and a dedicated IP add-on. The desktop map needed zooming to reach city-level servers, so we switched to the quicker list view. Our NordVPN review scores it 9.0/10.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Threat Protection Pro blocks ads and trackers
- Post-quantum encryption on RAM-only servers
- Meshnet links your own devices privately
Cons
- Renewal charges land about two weeks before the term ends
- Double VPN cuts speed by around 80 percent on preset pairs
- $14.99 on monthly billing
2. Proton VPN - Best Free Alternative to Bitdefender VPN
Proton VPN gives Bitdefender free users the most room to grow, because its free plan never runs dry partway through the day. Installation took about two minutes, and the apps explain each setting in plain language. On the free tier we saw no throttling. The catch mirrors Bitdefender's free plan: the app picks the server location for you.
Upgrading to VPN Plus changes the picture. Paid Proton VPN cut our download speed by under 10 percent on nearby servers, and Netflix, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, HBO Max and Hulu unblocked without server hopping. We found no DNS, IPv6 or WebRTC leaks across dozens of server countries. Securitum's 2025 no-logs audit report found that Proton fully complies with its no-logs policy after an on-site visit in Zurich, and the company is based in Switzerland. Our Proton VPN review scores it 9.0/10.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Secure Core multi-hop and the Stealth protocol
- Open-source apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS
- VPN Plus spans 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries
Cons
- Live chat isn't 24/7, and email replies can take about two days
- No streaming or P2P on the free plan
- $9.99 on monthly billing
3. ExpressVPN - Best for Streaming
ExpressVPN is the steadiest option here for streaming and calls, which is exactly where Bitdefender VPN wobbled. Connections stayed rock solid through long daily use in our testing, and Network Lock, its kill switch, rarely tripped. Download speed dropped by roughly 37 to 39 percent on Windows and Mac, a bigger hit than NordVPN, but ping rose by only 5 to 6 ms. That matters if Bitdefender's distant servers made your video calls lag. Netflix, Hulu and ESPN+ loaded without issues.
KPMG's 2025 assurance of ExpressVPN's privacy policy confirmed that it stores no browsing history, traffic destinations, DNS queries or connection logs. ExpressVPN is based in the British Virgin Islands and owned by Kape Technologies, which also owns CyberGhost and Private Internet Access. It applies obfuscation automatically on every server and ships apps for routers, Apple TV, consoles and browsers, none of which Bitdefender offers. Our ExpressVPN review scores it 8.8/10.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Lightway protocol on RAM-only TrustedServer hardware
- Up to 14 devices on the Pro plan
- Split tunneling included
Cons
- No multi-hop option
- $12.99 on monthly billing
- Renews at about $99.95 a year
4. Surfshark - Best for Unlimited Devices
Surfshark removes the device limit entirely, so a household that outgrows Bitdefender Premium can cover every phone, laptop and TV on one plan. Download speed dropped about 17 percent on Windows and about 31 percent on macOS in our testing, with steady latency. Netflix worked across regions without VPN detection, and the native apps made setup on Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV painless. When the VPN dropped, the kill switch cut internet access instantly.
Deloitte first verified Surfshark's no-logs policy in 2023 and followed with a second assurance in 2025. The company is based in the Netherlands. If you like Bitdefender's all-in-one approach, Surfshark One adds antivirus, breach alerts and Incogni data removal on top of the VPN. Our Surfshark review scores it 8.6/10.
Pros and cons
Pros
- CleanWeb blocks ads and trackers
- Dynamic MultiHop and a dedicated IP add-on
- RAM-only servers in 100 countries
Cons
- Monthly billing runs about $15 to $16.45, depending on region
- Camouflage mode works only with OpenVPN
- Starter renews at $79 a year
5. Mullvad VPN - Best for Privacy Purists
Mullvad asks for less personal data than any VPN here, which suits anyone uneasy that Bitdefender ties its VPN to a Bitdefender Central account. Sign-up took seconds: Mullvad generated a random 16-digit account number, which was our only login, with no email or password. Local speed loss was only around 6 percent, though distant servers slowed downloads noticeably. Streaming was hit or miss, with some servers reaching Netflix and others detected. Support is email-only, and replies came in hours rather than minutes.
The privacy record backs the approach. Mullvad has passed more than ten independent audits from firms including Cure53 and Assured AB, and a 2023 Swedish police raid found no user data to seize. It's based in Sweden, runs WireGuard only, and adds DAITA traffic-analysis defense, multihop and several obfuscation modes. The price is a flat €5 a month on any term, unchanged since 2009, and you can pay in cash or crypto. Our Mullvad VPN review scores it 8.5/10.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Open-source apps, including Linux
- Split tunneling on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android
- DNS-level ad and tracker blocking
Cons
- 14-day refund window that excludes cash, crypto and App Store payments
- No free plan or trial
- No port forwarding
6. Private Internet Access - Most Affordable Alternative
Private Internet Access has the lowest long-term price on this list, at about $2.03 a month on a plan of three years plus three bonus months ($79 upfront). PIA rotates its deal length and bonus months, so the intro rate and term differ by date and region. A native Linux app with a full interface also covers a gap Bitdefender leaves open.
Speed loss was small in our testing, about 4 percent on local servers and 18 percent on international ones. The desktop app's long settings list felt overwhelming at first, then became easy once we had tuned it. Streaming is the trade-off: US and UK Netflix no longer unblocked, and Disney+ and Hulu detected the VPN. Deloitte completed its third no-logs assurance of PIA in December 2025, and the service runs RAM-only servers. PIA is based in the United States and owned by Kape. Our Private Internet Access review scores it 8.4/10.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Open-source apps
- Servers in 91 countries plus all 50 US states
- Choice of AES-128 or AES-256 encryption
Cons
- US jurisdiction
- About $11.95 on monthly billing
- Dedicated IP costs extra
7. CyberGhost - Best for Beginners
CyberGhost is the easiest step up if Bitdefender's simple dashboard is what you like most about it. Setup was quick and beginner-friendly, and switching protocols on desktop took about four seconds. Its streaming servers are labeled by service, and Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, Disney+ and Prime Video unblocked on the first try. Nearby servers lost little speed, roughly 5 to 19 percent, but long-distance servers dropped by about 44 to 59 percent. The Windows app looks dated next to newer rivals, while the mobile apps are cleaner.
CyberGhost, like Bitdefender, is based in Romania, and Kape owns it. Deloitte Romania completed its third no-logs assurance of the service in Q4 2025. Live chat runs 24/7, a welcome change from Bitdefender, where our chats connected within about a minute but a fix could take more than a day. The 7-device limit is tighter than most rivals allow. Our CyberGhost review scores it 8.4/10.
Pros and cons
Pros
- NoSpy servers and RAM-only hardware
- Servers in 100 countries
- Dedicated IP add-on
Cons
- No multi-hop option
- Doesn't work in China
- Only 14 days to claim a refund on the monthly plan
Bitdefender VPN vs Alternatives: Price Comparison
Bitdefender VPN's pricing looks cheap on monthly billing. Premium costs $6.99 a month, less than NordVPN at $14.99, ExpressVPN and CyberGhost at $12.99 each, or Proton VPN Plus at $9.99. If you pay month to month, switching will cost you more, not less.
The savings come on long plans. Most alternatives drop below $3.50 a month for the first term, while Bitdefender's annual plan renews at about $69.99 a year. Those long-plan rates are introductory, so each provider moves them with promotions and they renew higher. Mullvad is the exception, charging the same €5 every month on any term, so there is no discount to chase and no renewal jump to plan around.
Refund windows matter when you're testing a replacement. Bitdefender, NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark and PIA all give you 30 days, and Proton prorates the refund for unused time. Mullvad allows 14 days.
Free Bitdefender VPN Alternatives
Proton VPN is the only pick on this list with a permanent free plan, and it's where we'd send Bitdefender free users first. It has no ads, needs no credit card, and puts no daily limit on your traffic. You get one device and free servers in a limited set of countries: Proton says 10, and it has expanded the free server list over time.
TunnelBear is the other name that comes up, and our TunnelBear review rates it 7.5/10. Its free plan gives you 2GB of data a month, which ran out in roughly 20 minutes of HD video in our testing. That is less than Bitdefender's own free tier, since 200 MB a day adds up to around 6 GB over a month on one device. Since early 2026 TunnelBear's free tier has also dropped manual country selection and split tunneling. In its favor, the map-based one-click interface is quick to set up, Cure53 has completed its eighth annual security audit, and McAfee has owned the service since 2018.
To try a paid VPN for free instead, use Surfshark's 7-day trial through the iOS and Android app stores, or Bitdefender's own 7-day Premium trial.
How to Switch from Bitdefender VPN (Cancel Auto-Renewal and Run Both Safely)
You don't have to give up Bitdefender's antivirus to change VPNs. Its malware protection keeps working on its own; only the VPN needs to step aside. Bitdefender VPN won't connect while another VPN app is connected on Windows, and Android and iOS allow only one active VPN at a time.
- Sign up for the new VPN and treat its refund window as your trial period.
- Disconnect Bitdefender VPN and turn off its auto-connect setting, so it doesn't compete for the tunnel at startup.
- Install the new VPN, connect it, and run a DNS leak test before you rely on it.
- Cancel Bitdefender's auto-renewal. Sign in to Bitdefender Central at central.bitdefender.com, click My Subscriptions, open the My Payments tab and click View details next to the product. Then click Manage your subscription renewal options, choose End Auto-Renewal and confirm.
Turn off auto-renewal as soon as you decide to switch, well before the renewal date, so the annual plan doesn't renew at its full price while you're still testing the new service.
When to Stay with Bitdefender VPN
Bitdefender VPN is a good fit if you already pay for Bitdefender's suite and value one bill and one app over extra features. Premium Security includes the unlimited Premium VPN, so its users already have the full version at no extra cost. Total Security includes the Standard VPN at 200 MB a day, which is enough for securing email and banking on public Wi-Fi.
It also does the basics well. The apps are clean, they install quickly, and the dashboard recommends a server automatically. Nearby servers cost us roughly 10 to 23 percent of our download speed, which is fine for browsing and HD streaming. DNS and WebRTC leak tests came back clean on Premium, and torrenting worked without problems. If you want a single security package, our guide to antivirus suites that bundle a VPN compares Bitdefender with the other options.
Final Thoughts
Bitdefender VPN is a convenient extra for suite users, but its capped free tier, limited advanced features and inconsistent streaming push many people toward a dedicated VPN.
