Mysterium VPN is a decentralized VPN, or dVPN. Instead of renting servers in data centers, it routes your traffic through nodes, which are internet connections shared by independent operators. Many of them are home broadband lines with residential IP addresses. It started out with pay-as-you-go billing in crypto and now sells fixed subscriptions in its main app.
That design suits some people, but it trades away steady speeds, reliable streaming and an audited no-logs policy. If those matter more to you, a centralized VPN is the better fit, and we recommend Proton VPN as the best Mysterium VPN alternative for most people. Our quick picks come first.
Quick picks: the best Mysterium VPN alternatives at a glance
We ranked all eight alternatives by their scores in our full reviews. These are the three highest.
1. Proton VPN - best overall Mysterium VPN alternative
Proton VPN is the switch we recommend to most Mysterium users, and it scores 9.0/10 in our Proton VPN review. Where Mysterium sends you through whichever home connection an operator is sharing that day, Proton runs its own network in 140+ countries under Proton AG in Switzerland. Securitum has audited its no-logs policy five years running, and the 2026 report found no logging of browsing, DNS queries, destinations or identifiable connection metadata.
Consistency is what stood out when we set it against Mysterium's node lottery. Paid servers cut our download speed by no more than about 8 percent, and DNS, IPv6 and WebRTC leak tests stayed clean across dozens of countries. Netflix libraries, BBC iPlayer and HBO Max unblocked consistently on a paid plan, though Disney+ was less predictable. Mysterium has no multi-hop, while Proton's Secure Core routed us through Iceland, Switzerland or Sweden and cost us about 35 percent of our speed.
Paid plans add port forwarding on P2P servers and the Stealth protocol for censored networks. The apps have been open source since January 2020 and cover all the major platforms, including Linux, Apple TV and Fire TV.
Pros
- Five consecutive Securitum no-logs audits
- Free plan with no data cap and no ads
Cons
- Live chat is not 24/7 and is closed to free users
- Disney+ unblocking is hit and miss
VPN Plus costs $9.99 monthly, $3.99 a month on 1 year or $2.99 a month on 2 years, covers 10 devices and carries a 30-day money-back guarantee. You can pay by card, PayPal, cash or Bitcoin. The free plan offers 1 device and servers in 10 countries, but it picks the server for you and does not support streaming or torrenting.
2. NordVPN - best for speed and a large server network
If raw speed is why you are leaving Mysterium, NordVPN is the pick, and it ties Proton at 9.0/10 in our NordVPN review. On Mysterium, a nearby node cut a 74.81 Mbps connection to about 22.8 Mbps, roughly 30 percent of the line. NordVPN kept 95 percent or more of a gigabit line on nearby US servers, roughly 825 to 903 Mbps, and connections came up in about 1 to 2 seconds.
The apps ran without crashes or stalls across torrenting, streaming and everyday browsing. Netflix in 20+ regions, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer all unblocked on regular servers, with no special node to hunt for. Double VPN cost us roughly half our speed. We found the map interface clunky on smaller screens, so we used the quicker list view.
NordVPN runs about 9,000 servers. Because its own pages count virtual locations differently, its country total ranges from roughly 130 to 160+. It is based in Panama, and Deloitte completed its sixth no-logs assurance engagement, announced in February 2026. NordWhisper and obfuscated servers help on censored networks, and P2P servers, Meshnet and Threat Protection Pro round out the features.
Pros
- Near line-speed on nearby servers
- Six independent no-logs assurance reports
- Dedicated P2P and obfuscated servers
Cons
- No free plan
- Renewal price jumps well above the promotional rate
The Basic plan costs $14.99 monthly, $5.49 a month on 1 year or $3.49 a month on 2 years, with 10 simultaneous devices and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
3. ExpressVPN - best for streaming and beginners
ExpressVPN gives you one large connect button and a Smart Location pick, so you never weigh nodes by price and quality score the way Mysterium asks you to. That makes it the easiest app here to hand to someone who found Mysterium's per-node shopping confusing, and it scores 8.8/10 in our ExpressVPN review. Live chat answered us in under a minute, while Mysterium routes support through web-form tickets.
Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Prime Video and Hulu unblocked across many regions without buffering, while on Mysterium we needed a fresh residential node every few hours. Lightway held roughly 450 to 720 Mbps on US and UK servers from a gigabit line. On a slower home line, though, nearby-server downloads dropped by about 37 to 39 percent, a bigger hit than NordVPN or Proton VPN. Network Lock fired correctly each time a server timed out or our network changed.
ExpressVPN covers 113 countries with RAM-only TrustedServer hardware and automatic obfuscation. KPMG published an assessment of its TrustedServer and privacy-policy claims in June 2025. It is registered in the British Virgin Islands and has been owned by Kape Technologies since September 2021.
Pros
- Simplest apps on this list
- KPMG-assessed privacy claims
- Fast live chat
Cons
- Bigger speed loss on slower home lines
- No multi-hop
Basic starts at about $2.79 to $2.99 a month on the 28-month term and renews at $99.95 a year. The starting rate is a range because ExpressVPN's promotional rate moves with running deals. It covers 10 devices (12 on Advanced, 14 on Pro), with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
4. Surfshark - best value for unlimited devices
Mysterium caps you at 6, 10 or 15 devices depending on the plan, while Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous connections on every plan. That removes the device math entirely, and Surfshark scores 8.6/10 in our Surfshark review. Native Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV apps made TV setup simple.
On macOS, our downloads slowed by only about 10 percent, even on a transatlantic server. The Windows app showed bigger slowdowns and occasional ping spikes. A 4GB torrent ran only about 5 percent slower with Camouflage Mode on, and the kill switch held with no IPv4, IPv6, DNS or WebRTC leaks. Netflix unblocked in 15+ regional libraries, plus Max, Disney+, Hulu and BBC iPlayer.
Surfshark B.V. is based in the Netherlands and runs 4,500+ servers in 100 countries. Deloitte verified its no-logs policy in 2023 and again in 2025. MultiHop and NoBorders mode for censorship bypass are included, but there is no port forwarding.
Pros
- Unlimited devices on every plan
- Lowest 2-year price of our paid picks
- Native TV apps
Cons
- Windows app is less consistent than macOS
- No port forwarding
The Starter plan is $2.49 a month on the 2-year plan, billed $67.23 for the first 27 months, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Month-to-month costs roughly $15.45 to $16.45, because Surfshark's monthly price differs by region and tax.
5. Mullvad VPN - best for anonymous sign-up and no-logs privacy
Swedish police visited Mullvad's office in 2023 with a search warrant and left with no customer data. Mysterium's privacy promise has never faced that kind of practical test. The outcome makes Mullvad a natural fit for anyone who chose Mysterium to avoid handing over personal details. It scores 8.5/10 in our Mullvad VPN review.
Sign-up took us seconds: Mullvad issued a random 16-digit account number and asked for no email or name. You can pay with cash, Bitcoin or Monero, and crypto is discounted 10 percent. Its audits, including Cure53 in June 2024 and X41 D-Sec in January 2026, test infrastructure and app code rather than providing a formal no-logs attestation. Whether that counts as "audited no-logs" depends on your definition.
The trade-offs showed up quickly in our use. US servers ranged from about 384 Mbps down to under 90 Mbps on a gigabit line. Netflix and BBC iPlayer threw proxy errors on the shared IPs, and access that worked one session failed minutes later. Everyday browsing ran into frequent CAPTCHA and Cloudflare checks.
Mullvad charges a flat EUR 5 per month however long you subscribe, with a 14-day money-back guarantee (cash payments excluded) and up to 5 devices. It runs 566 servers in 50 countries from Sweden and has used WireGuard only since removing OpenVPN in January 2026. Port forwarding was removed in 2023.
Pros
- No email or name at sign-up
- Cash and Monero payments
- Flat price with no renewal jump
Cons
- Weak, inconsistent streaming
- Five-device cap fills fast
- Email-only support
6. Windscribe - best free plan alternative
Mysterium's main app has no free plan, and Windscribe is the best place to start if you want a replacement that costs nothing. Its free plan gives you 10GB per month with a confirmed email (2GB without) and servers in 10 countries. Windscribe also scores 8.5/10 in our Windscribe review, level with Mullvad.
US connections kept about 91 percent of our download speed, with latency usually up by under 5 ms, and IP, DNS and WebRTC leak tests came back clean. Prime Video and BBC iPlayer worked on the first try. Netflix, Disney+ and Max needed several server switches, and Disney+ once threw error code 83. The free allowance ran out quickly once we used it for streaming content.
When you outgrow the free tier, Pro costs $9 a month or $69 a year and covers 69+ countries with unlimited simultaneous connections. Build-A-Plan is a cheaper way in, offering single locations at $1 per location per month, with a $3 minimum. Pro also brings one feature that maps neatly onto Mysterium: a residential static IP for $8 a month. Refunds are short and usage-capped. Windscribe's help pages show both 3-day and 7-day versions of the policy, so ask early.
Pros
- 10GB free each month
- Unlimited devices
- Optional residential static IP
Cons
- Cluttered home screen with icon-only location tabs
- No human live chat
Pro adds port forwarding with 7-day rules. Stealth obfuscation works, but it is slow and missing on iOS. Packetlabs audited Windscribe's infrastructure in June 2024, and its no-logs claim held up in a 2025 Greek court case. Ukrainian authorities seized two unencrypted Windscribe servers in 2021, and Windscribe says no user data was exposed.
7. IVPN - best small, audited, privacy-first provider
IVPN has the long audit record Mysterium lacks: Cure53 audited its no-logs policy in 2019 and has run annual security audits since. It is a small Gibraltar-based provider. Streaming and app reliability are mostly what hold it to 7.0/10 in our IVPN review.
Sign-up took seconds with an auto-generated account ID and no email or password. Nearby WireGuard connections lost only about 5 to 10 percent of our download speed, but a US-to-Canada connection lost about 64 percent. Netflix unblocked in the US, Canada, UK and Australia, though not every time, while BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu, Max and Prime Video stayed blocked. DNS and WebRTC leak tests passed, and the kill switch held when we switched servers.
IVPN runs 89 gateways in 41 countries, includes multi-hop on all plans and uses V2Ray and obfsproxy to get around censorship. You can pay by cash, Monero, Bitcoin, card or PayPal.
Pros
- Cure53 no-logs audit plus annual security audits
- Multi-hop on every plan
Cons
- Apps sometimes log out on their own
- Price feels high for the network size
- No port forwarding since 2023
Standard costs $6 a month or $60 a year, Plus $8 or $80, and Pro Suite $10 or $100. Standard and Plus cover 5 devices and Pro Suite covers 10. There is a 30-day refund window but no free trial.
8. NymVPN - closest decentralized alternative to Mysterium
NymVPN scores 7.0/10 in our NymVPN review, and it is the pick if you still want a decentralized network. Like Mysterium, it relies on independently run nodes. Unlike Mysterium, it offers an Anonymous Mode that sends traffic through a 5-hop mixnet with packet timing mixing and cover traffic, while Fast Mode is a 2-hop WireGuard route for everyday use.
The anonymous sign-up worked as promised: a 24-word passphrase, crypto payment and no personal details. Fast Mode cut a roughly 300 Mbps line to around 100 Mbps, which still played 4K YouTube without buffering. Anonymous Mode often fell below 1 Mbps and some speed tests did not complete, so we kept it for messaging and email. Connections took about 4 to 5 seconds, and Netflix (US, UK and Canada) and Prime Video worked in Fast Mode.
NymVPN launched publicly in March 2025, and Cure53 ran a security audit of it in July 2024. Its system-wide kill switch is always on, which helps if a connection drops. There is no fastest-server option, so you pick entry and exit points yourself.
Pros
- Mixnet mode resists traffic analysis
- Pays with Monero, cash or $NYM
- Always-on kill switch
Cons
- Anonymous Mode is too slow for browsing
- No Android TV app or browser extension
The 1-year plan works out to about $4.00 a month, but prices shift with term, payment method and promotions. Paying with the $NYM token saves up to 75%. Accounts cover up to 10 devices under a 2 TB monthly fair-use cap, refunds are pro-rata, and apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS 16+ and Android.
Other Mysterium VPN alternatives worth knowing
Beyond the eight picks, Private Internet Access and CyberGhost both score 8.4/10 on our reviews, and TorGuard scores 7.4/10 in our TorGuard VPN review. The tools below are different kinds of privacy software.
Tor Browser and Orbot
Tor Browser routes your online activity through multiple volunteer relays for free and is the best-known decentralized privacy network. On Android, Orbot has a VPN mode that sends selected apps' traffic through Tor. Expect slower speeds, and expect some shopping and payment sites to block Tor exits.
Sentinel-based dVPNs, Psiphon and Hotspot Shield
The Sentinel dVPN network is an open-source, peer-to-peer network with 1,500+ bandwidth providers paid in its own token, and it shares Mysterium's node-quality trade-offs. Psiphon provides a free, open-source tool built to reach blocked sites rather than to anonymize you, and its free tier is speed-limited. Hotspot Shield is a mainstream centralized VPN that scores 6.5/10 in our Hotspot Shield review.

Why people look for a Mysterium VPN alternative
Mysterium VPN has genuine strengths. Setup is easy, and the node-based app needs no email, just a generated key. Its residential IPs get past blocks that catch ordinary VPN servers. It scores 5.4/10 in our Mysterium VPN review, with sub-scores of 4/10 for speed, 7/10 for streaming, 5/10 for privacy and 5/10 for value.
Residential exit nodes and variable speeds
An exit node is the final stop where your traffic leaves the network and reaches the website. Mysterium's residential IP network draws on 7,500+ residential IPs in 100+ countries on Plus and Pro, while Basic covers 57 countries. Because each node is someone's home connection, speed depends on that person's line.
That variability was the biggest problem in our testing. A good node held about 47 Mbps off a 103 Mbps line, but far nodes fell to roughly 13 Mbps in California and 1 Mbps in Japan. The app threw "connection failed" when a node had gone dormant, and the only fix was picking another one. We also caught a DNS leak on a US node in Florida, so we ran a leak check after every connection.
Pay-as-you-go pricing and crypto payments
Mysterium built its name on paying per gigabyte in MYST tokens. That model now survives mainly in the separate Mysterium Dark app. There, the per-GB cost floats with node supply, demand and the MYST token price, so no fixed rate exists. The main app sells Basic, Plus and Pro subscriptions, payable by card, crypto, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Mysterium's current pricing runs from $10.49 a month for Basic down to $2.59 a month on a 2-year plan, with Plus at $4.29 a month on 1 year or $2.99 on 2 years. Mysterium runs rotating promotions, so the entry rate can change between visits. Refunds are available for 30 days on 2-year plans but only 7 days on monthly and 1-year plans. Refund and cancellation trouble comes up repeatedly in complaints.
Running a node: legal and bandwidth risk
Using Mysterium VPN never makes your own device part of the network; Mysterium says its residential IPs come from operators who explicitly agreed to take part. The points below apply only if you run a node yourself to earn MYST.
Running an exit node means other people's traffic leaves through your IP address. Node runners choose which traffic to carry, from business categories such as data scraping to a Public category for Mysterium Dark users. Whether that is allowed depends on local law, your ISP's terms and the traffic types you enable. The node software cannot guarantee that operators will face no legal consequences.
Node help guides suggest a 4-core PC, 8 GB of RAM and a home connection of at least 50 Mbps, and they discourage mobile internet. Earnings are paid in MYST and cannot be predicted.
How we chose these Mysterium VPN alternatives
We started from what Mysterium does well and where it falls short. Worth keeping: crypto payments, low-friction sign-up and IPs that get past streaming blocks. Worth fixing: node-to-node speed swings, dormant nodes, leaks on individual nodes and an unaudited no-logs policy.
We judged each candidate on speed consistency, DNS and WebRTC leak results, kill switch behavior, streaming, torrenting, censorship bypass, sign-up anonymity, independent audits, price and device limits. The eight picks are ordered by each provider's score in our full review, highest first. Ties go to whichever provider better serves a typical Mysterium user.
What to look for in a Mysterium VPN replacement
The right replacement depends on which part of Mysterium you want to leave behind. Four questions separated our picks.
Centralized vs decentralized VPNs
A centralized VPN owns or rents its servers and answers for them, so it can be audited and tuned for speed. A decentralized VPN spreads traffic across independently run nodes, which removes the single company in the middle but adds node-quality variance. Because Mysterium traffic exits through a stranger's residential connection, that operator could in principle see anything not protected by HTTPS.
Decentralization alone does not guarantee anonymity either. dVPNs which do not mix traffic stay open to traffic-correlation attacks, and so does Mysterium, which has no multi-hop. Nym is a competitor, so read it as an informed argument rather than a neutral verdict.
Decentralized does not automatically mean more private. What protects you is how traffic is routed and who can see it at the exit.
No-logs proof, audits and RAM-only servers
A no-logs policy is only a promise until someone checks it, so look for a named auditor and a recent date. Proton, NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and IVPN all qualify, while Mullvad and NymVPN have security audits of their code and infrastructure rather than a no-logs check. RAM-only servers add protection because nothing written to them survives a reboot. Mysterium lists a no-logs policy and ChaCha20 encryption over WireGuard and OpenVPN, but no independent audit has been published. Its kill switch has also appeared and disappeared across app versions.
Streaming, torrenting and censorship bypass
NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark and paid Proton VPN unblocked major services on ordinary servers, with no node switching. If you seed torrents, check for port forwarding: Proton and Windscribe Pro have it, while Mullvad and IVPN removed it in 2023. For censored networks, look for an obfuscation mode such as Proton's Stealth or IVPN's V2Ray.
If you still have time left on a Mysterium plan, run your replacement alongside it for a few days to confirm your streaming services and torrent client work before you cancel.
Free plans, pricing and device limits
Only two picks have a free plan. Proton VPN's free plan has no data cap or ads but locks you to 1 device, while Windscribe's gives you 10GB a month and a choice of locations. The lowest long-term prices come from Surfshark and Proton, and Surfshark and Windscribe allow unlimited devices. Check renewal prices too, because NordVPN and ExpressVPN jump sharply after the first term.
Is Mysterium VPN still worth using?
For a narrow group, yes. If you want a residential IP to reach a streaming library and do not mind switching nodes when a stream drops, Mysterium does that well. It now has apps for iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and Android TV, plus browser extensions for Chrome, Brave, Opera and Opera GX.
For most people, our 5.4/10 score reflects the trade-offs covered above. Mysterium is operated by UAB "MN Intelligence" in Lithuania. Support runs through web-form tickets, and replies take around 12 hours. If you want privacy you can verify and speed you can plan around, any of our six picks that score 8.5/10 or higher makes a better daily VPN than Mysterium.
