hide.me is a fast, privacy-focused VPN, but its limits push plenty of users to look elsewhere. The free plan now gives you unlimited data, yet it limits you to 8 locations, one device and restricted speeds. Streaming support, port forwarding and a fixed IP are Premium-only, and even on Premium our Netflix results were inconsistent. Others want a jurisdiction with a longer audit record, or a dedicated obfuscation mode for censored networks.
Proton VPN is our top pick for a switch. It matches hide.me's no-cap free plan, then scales to a paid tier with stronger streaming and a no-logs audit every year.
We compared every alternative against hide.me on speed, streaming, leak protection, audits and price. The method is explained near the end of the page.
Quick Picks: The Best hide.me Alternatives at a Glance
Each score matches our full review of that VPN, so you can set it directly against hide.me's 8.2.
Why Look for a hide.me Alternative?
hide.me has been on the market since 2012, and it gets more right than wrong. Our hide.me VPN review scores it 8.2/10. The reasons to leave are specific, so it helps to know which ones apply to you before you pay for something else.
Where hide.me Falls Short
The free plan is the first sticking point. According to hide.me's current plans, free users get unlimited data but only 8 server locations and one connection. hide.me restricts free speeds without publishing the ceiling, and measured free speeds swing widely with server load. In our testing, free-plan speeds could drop 70 to 90 percent below the line's normal speed. That was fine for browsing and email, but too slow for streaming or large downloads.
Streaming is the second gap. hide.me lists streaming support, a fixed IP and dynamic port forwarding for Premium only. On Premium, Prime Video, Max, Hulu and BBC iPlayer worked for us. Netflix was less predictable. It unblocked in several regions through the streaming server list but failed on other attempts, and Disney+ failed as well.
Jurisdiction and obfuscation are the last two gaps. hide.me is run by eVenture Ltd. in Malaysia, which sits outside the 5/9/14 Eyes alliances. That is a reasonable base, but some users prefer a provider whose logging claims have been tested under legal pressure, as Mullvad's and PIA's have been. hide.me also has no mode built to defeat deep packet inspection. Its SoftEther and SSTP protocols can run over TCP 443, which sometimes passes restrictive networks, and those two protocols sometimes failed to connect for us.
When hide.me Is Still Worth Keeping
hide.me is worth keeping if your main need is fast paid servers. On WireGuard, our paid connections kept about 95 percent of baseline download speed and about 88 percent of upload. DNS, IPv4, IPv6 and WebRTC leak tests passed on the secure protocols.
It also treats long-term customers well. The 26-month plan costs $2.69 a month, billed $69.99, and it renews at the same price and duration. Few rivals on this list make that promise. Add Premium port forwarding and payment in Monero, and hide.me still suits a privacy-minded torrent user.
hide.me Alternatives Compared
hide.me sits in the last row as the baseline. Only Surfshark and Private Internet Access undercut its long-plan price, so most picks earn their place on features rather than cost.

The Best hide.me Alternatives, Ranked
We ranked the picks by their HTS review scores. Each entry covers what it does better than hide.me and what you give up by switching.
1. Proton VPN: Best Free hide.me Alternative
Proton VPN is the one switch that works whether you pay or not. Our Proton VPN review scores it 9.0/10, well ahead of hide.me.
Like hide.me's, its free plan has no data cap and no ads, but Proton picks the server for you from a small rotating pool of countries. You cannot choose a location, stream or torrent on it. The paid VPN Plus tier is where it pulls ahead, at $2.99 a month on the 2-year plan or $9.99 month to month. It covers 10 devices across 20,000+ servers in 149 countries.
We connected to a nearby paid server and lost only about 8 percent of our download speed, and 4K video loaded without buffering. Paid plans unlocked more than 20 Netflix libraries plus BBC iPlayer, Disney+ and HBO Max, which is the streaming consistency hide.me lacked for us. Secure Core multi-hop was the slow spot, costing roughly a third of our speed. No IPv6, DNS or WebRTC leaks showed up across dozens of countries.
Proton AG is based in Switzerland, and Securitum has audited its no-logs policy every year from 2022 to 2026. The Stealth protocol handles censored networks, running about 10 to 35 percent slower than a standard connection.
Pros
- Free plan with no data cap and no ads
- Stealth protocol for restrictive networks
- Port forwarding on paid plans
- Settings explained in plain language
Cons
- Free plan gives no country choice, streaming or torrenting
- Live chat is not 24/7 and is closed to free users
- Refunds are prorated, so only unused time comes back
2. NordVPN: Best hide.me Alternative Overall
Where Proton wins on its free tier, NordVPN wins as the most complete paid VPN. Our NordVPN review scores it 9.0/10, and it has no free plan at all.
On our gigabit line, NordVPN kept 95 percent or more of the connection on nearby US servers, between about 825 and 903 Mbps. Regular servers unblocked Netflix, Max, Disney+, Prime Video and BBC iPlayer, with no need to hunt for a streaming list. Connections stayed stable with no disconnects, and DNS and WebRTC leak tests came back clean. Double VPN was the exception, cutting our downloads by around half on a fast line.
NordVPN also fills hide.me's obfuscation gap with obfuscated servers and NordWhisper. It is based in Panama, and its policy passed a sixth independent no-logs assurance by Deloitte, announced in February 2026. The Basic plan costs $3.49 a month on the 2-year plan, $5.49 on the 1-year plan and $14.99 month to month, for 10 devices.
Pros
- Streams from regular servers
- Obfuscated servers and NordWhisper for censored networks
- Near-full speed on nearby servers
Cons
- No port forwarding, unlike hide.me Premium
- Renewal price jumps well above the promotional rate
- Kill switch defaults are aggressive and need adjusting
3. ExpressVPN: Best for Streaming and Restrictive Networks
ExpressVPN trades NordVPN's feature depth for simplicity. Our ExpressVPN review scores it 8.8/10, and its apps are among the easiest we have used, with one large connect button and a recommended Smart Location.
Streaming is its strongest case against hide.me. Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Prime Video and Hulu unblocked for us across many regions. On a gigabit line, Lightway held roughly 450 to 720 Mbps on US and UK servers. On a slower home line, downloads dropped by roughly 37 to 39 percent, yet stayed fast enough for 4K streaming and gaming. When a server timed out during one session, Network Lock cut traffic correctly.
Obfuscation is built in and automatic, with no toggle to find. ExpressVPN covers 113 countries from the British Virgin Islands, and a KPMG assessment published in 2025 backed its no-logs claims. The 2-year Basic plan starts from about $3 a month for 10 devices.
Pros
- Most consistent streaming on this list
- Obfuscation works automatically
- Live chat answered us in under a minute
Cons
- Basic renews at $99.95 a year after the promotional term
- Port forwarding only through its router app
- No free plan, only a 7-day mobile trial
4. Surfshark: Best Budget Pick for Unlimited Devices
Surfshark is one of only two picks that cost less than hide.me. Our Surfshark review scores it 8.6/10, and the Starter plan is $2.49 a month on the 2-year term.
Its main advantage is unlimited simultaneous devices, compared with hide.me's 10. It changed Netflix regions for us without being flagged, and the native Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV apps made TV setup simple. With Camouflage Mode on, our torrent ran only about 5 percent slower than without the VPN. Speed losses ranged from about 10 percent on long-distance links to around 30 percent on some Mac tests.
Surfshark is based in the Netherlands, and Deloitte verified its no-logs policy in 2023 and 2025. It runs 4,500+ servers in 100 countries.
Pros
- Unlimited devices on every plan
- Camouflage Mode obfuscation
- Kill switch held during connection drops
Cons
- Renews at $79 a year after the first term
- No port forwarding
- MultiHop slows connections significantly
5. Mullvad VPN: Best for Anonymous Sign-Up
Mullvad takes the opposite approach to Surfshark's bundle of extras. Our Mullvad VPN review scores it 8.5/10 for a narrow, privacy-first design.
Signing up took seconds. Mullvad issued a random 16-digit account number and asked for no email or name. It charges a flat EUR 5 a month with no tiers or long-term discounts, and it takes cash. Our average download speed loss was only about 2 percent, though speeds varied by server. There is no automatic fastest-server option, so we picked locations by hand.
Its privacy record is the draw. Swedish police arrived with a search warrant in 2023 and left with nothing, because Mullvad stores no customer data. Cure53 audited its infrastructure in 2024. The trade-off is streaming, where Netflix US and UK and BBC iPlayer blocked its servers, and websites threw CAPTCHA challenges often.
Pros
- No email needed to sign up
- Pay by cash or crypto
- Lockdown Mode and a working kill switch
Cons
- Only 5 devices per account
- Port forwarding removed in 2023
- Email-only support, and a 14-day refund that excludes cash
6. Windscribe: Closest Free-Plan Match to hide.me
Windscribe is the free plan most like hide.me's, with a different set of limits. Our Windscribe review scores it 8.5/10.
hide.me Free gives you unlimited data on one device. Windscribe Free gives you 10GB a month with a confirmed email, about 10 countries and unlimited devices. Free servers saw periodic speed drops of up to 90 percent at busy times. On Pro, speeds held near our baseline on nearby servers, about 92 of 95 Mbps, but fell off on long routes such as Singapore.
Pro costs $69 a year, or you can build a plan at $1 per location per month with a $3 minimum. Windscribe is based in Canada. It has no dedicated no-logs audit, but Packetlabs audited its RAM-only servers in 2024, and a server Dutch authorities seized in 2026 held no logs.
Pros
- Unlimited devices, even on the free plan
- Stealth and WStunnel obfuscation
- Port forwarding on Pro
Cons
- Free data capped at 10GB a month
- Refunds only within 7 days and under 10GB used
- No live chat, and ticket replies took around 18 hours
7. Private Internet Access: Most Customizable Budget Alternative
Private Internet Access is the cheapest pick on the list, at $2.03 a month on the 3-year plan, billed $79. Our Private Internet Access review scores it 8.4/10.
Its apps expose kill switch levels, protocol, encryption strength and port forwarding, which suits tinkerers more than beginners. On nearby servers our downloads dipped only about 5 percent, and WireGuard ran about 5 to 10 percent faster than OpenVPN. Longer routes told a different story: a US-to-US connection lost about 42 percent, international routes averaged close to 60 percent, and uploads fell 80 to 90 percent.
PIA is based in the United States, which some privacy buyers avoid. Its no-logs claim has held up in court, starting with a 2016 FBI case, and Deloitte reviewed it again in February 2026. It covers unlimited devices in 91 countries.
Pros
- Lowest long-plan price here
- Port forwarding and deep customization
- 24/7 live chat that connected in seconds
Cons
- Steep speed losses on long routes and uploads
- Streaming works only on streaming-optimized servers
- US jurisdiction
What to Look For in a hide.me Alternative
The right replacement depends on which hide.me limit bothers you. These four checks separate the picks.
Free Plan Limits
Compare the whole free plan, not only the data cap. hide.me Free already has unlimited data, so a switch only helps if you gain something else. Proton matches the data and drops the location choice. Windscribe adds devices but caps data at 10GB a month.
Free-plan caps change often. hide.me dropped its old monthly data cap, so check each provider's current free allowance before you switch.
No-Logs Audits and Jurisdiction
Look for a recent, independent audit and a track record under pressure. hide.me's Securitum no-logs re-audit was published in 2024, following a first audit in 2015. Proton, NordVPN, Surfshark and PIA have each been audited in 2025 or 2026. Mullvad and Windscribe rely on infrastructure audits plus real-world tests such as police searches and server seizures.
Obfuscation for Censored Networks
If you travel or work on filtered networks, you need a mode that disguises VPN traffic. hide.me has none. Proton's Stealth, NordVPN's obfuscated servers, Surfshark's Camouflage Mode and Windscribe's WStunnel all fill that gap.
Price and Renewal Costs
hide.me's fixed-price renewal is a strength, so your switch should be about features rather than billing. Most alternatives renew higher than their promotional rate.
Surfshark renews at $79 a year and ExpressVPN at $99.95 a year after their first terms. NordVPN also renews well above its promo price. Mullvad stays at EUR 5 a month.
Best hide.me Alternative by Use Case
- Free VPN with no data cap: Proton VPN
- Streaming on regular servers: NordVPN
- Easiest apps for travel and restrictive networks: ExpressVPN
- A whole household on one account: Surfshark or Private Internet Access
- Anonymous sign-up with cash: Mullvad VPN
- Free plan across many devices: Windscribe
- Torrenting with port forwarding on a budget: Private Internet Access
Is There a Free Alternative to hide.me?
Yes, and Proton VPN is the strongest one. Like hide.me Free, it has no data cap, and it adds a clear upgrade path to a 9.0-rated paid plan. Windscribe is the better free choice if you need several devices connected at once and use less than 10GB a month.
Hotspot Shield also has a free tier, but we would not switch to it. Its Basic plan allows one device, offers a US-only location and shows ads. The daily data allowance varies by platform and region. Our review scores it 6.5/10, below hide.me. For a wider shortlist, see our guide to the best free VPNs.
How We Picked These Alternatives
We started from our full reviews and kept only VPNs that outscore hide.me's 8.2. For each one, we ran speed tests on nearby and distant servers, tried major streaming services, and checked for DNS, IPv6 and WebRTC leaks. We read each provider's latest audit report and noted its legal base. Then we checked the live pricing page, including renewal terms and refund rules. We also cancelled a hide.me plan to see how painful switching is.
