Free Fast VPN apps promise lightning-fast servers, but on most phones the reality is a slow connection, a server list that only half works, and an ad every time you tap connect. If that sounds like the app on your phone, you probably want something quicker that you can also trust with your traffic.
We compared seven alternatives on the things that decide whether a VPN feels fast and safe: how much speed it loses on nearby and distant servers, what the free plan really includes, and whether anyone outside the company has checked its no-logs claim. We explain how we measured all of that in "How We Tested Speed and Ranked These Alternatives" further down the page.
The short answer: NordVPN is the fastest overall alternative, holding up on both an ordinary 100 Mbps line and a gigabit connection. If you want to stay free, Proton VPN is the one to install, because it is the most complete free plan we tested and it is backed by an audited no-logs policy.
Quick Answer: The Best Fast VPN Alternatives at a Glance
- Fastest overall: NordVPN (9.0/10), fastest across both line speeds we tested, with single-digit loss at 100 Mbps and the most gigabit headroom.
- Best free: Proton VPN (9.0/10), with a free plan that has no data cap and no ads.
- Best for unlimited devices: Surfshark (8.6/10), one subscription for every phone, laptop and TV in the house.
- Best free plan with generous data: Windscribe (8.5/10), with 10GB a month free and near-gigabit paid servers.
- Best for torrenting: Private Internet Access (8.4/10), with port forwarding and unlimited connections.
- Best free option for streaming: PrivadoVPN (7.5/10), whose free plan gets into Netflix.
- Fast free speeds, with trade-offs: Hotspot Shield (6.5/10), quick downloads but ads and more data collection.
Why Switch From Fast VPN?
"Fast VPN" is not one product. It is a generic store name that many unrelated developers use for free VPN apps on Google Play and the App Store. When we searched the stores, we found same-named listings from developers in Pakistan, Ukraine, Bangladesh, China, Vietnam and Singapore, often side by side in the results. That makes it easy to install the wrong publisher's app instead of the one a friend recommended. All of them are phone apps, and none of the listings we sampled offers a Windows, macOS or Linux version.
Speed is the most common reason people leave. When we tried Fast VPN apps, the free servers were slow, the app drained more battery than we expected, and some servers listed as available simply refused to connect.
Ads come next. Every Android listing we sampled carries Google Play's "Contains ads" label, and an ad could hang on screen until we disconnected the VPN. Some versions also sell a premium tier: the iOS app "VPN - Fast VPN Proxy" charges up to $49.99 a year after a 3-day trial.
Trust is what finally drives many users away. The listings advertise "military-grade encryption" and a "strict no-log policy", yet none names a company, a server count or an independent audit we could check those claims against. Support is usually a free Gmail address, with no ticket system or live chat. Data caps are not the issue, since the listings we sampled advertise unlimited bandwidth. The real cost is in what the apps declare about your data, covered in the safety section.

Keep in mind that the speed column mixes percentages and raw megabits, because a percentage loss means more on a slow line than on a gigabit one. Fast VPN itself is not in the table: there is no single app to measure, and no third-party speed test of any Fast VPN-named app exists.
The Best Fast VPN Alternatives
We ranked these seven services by their scores in our full reviews and used speed to break the tie at the top.
1. NordVPN: Fastest Overall Alternative
On a 1 Gbps line, a Seattle route through NordVPN reached about 903 Mbps, roughly three times what Private Internet Access managed on the same route. That gap is why NordVPN is the pick for anyone whose connection has outgrown what a free VPN can deliver. It shares the top score of 9.0/10 in our NordVPN review and wins the tie on speed.
The ordinary line told the same story. On a connection of roughly 100 Mbps, NordLynx (its WireGuard-based protocol) held downloads in the mid-90s on nearby servers, which works out to about 5 percent loss, with upload loss in the single digits too. That headroom shows in daily use: 4K streams played without buffering, and Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, Disney+ and HBO Max unblocked reliably. Connections held without unexpected drops, and the kill switch cut traffic when the tunnel failed.
There is no free plan. Basic costs $14.99 on monthly billing, or around $3.49 a month on the two-year plan, though that introductory rate moves with promotions and renews higher. NordVPN is based in Panama and runs RAM-only servers.
Pros
- Fastest across both line speeds we tested
- Reliable access to the major streaming services
- Six independent no-logs assurance engagements, the latest at the end of 2025
Cons
- No free plan
- Double VPN cuts speed by up to around 80 percent
- The desktop map needs zooming to reach city-level servers
2. Proton VPN: Best Free Alternative to Fast VPN
Proton VPN is for anyone who wants to leave Fast VPN without paying anything. It scores 9.0/10 in our Proton VPN review, and its free plan is the most generous on this list.
The free plan needs no credit card and runs on 1 device. The trade-off is control. Proton picks the server location for you, free servers cover only a small set of countries (a list Proton keeps expanding, so the count changes), and streaming and P2P are paid-only. Even so, free servers can reach 300 Mbps or more, and the free tier showed no throttling in our use.
Paid servers lost about 8 percent of download speed nearby, and on a gigabit line fast US servers delivered 500-700 Mbps, so the VPN was never the bottleneck. Setup took about two minutes, and we saw no DNS, IPv6 or WebRTC leaks across dozens of server countries.
VPN Plus costs $9.99 on monthly billing, or about $2.99 a month on the two-year plan (a promotional rate that renews higher), with 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries. Proton is based in Switzerland, and Securitum's on-site inspection in Zurich in August 2025 was an independent no-logs audit that found it fully complies with its no-logs policy.
Pros
- Free plan with unlimited data and no ads
- No speed cap on free servers
- Open-source apps
Cons
- Free plan limited to 1 device and an automatically chosen server
- No streaming or torrenting on the free plan
- Live chat is not 24/7, and email replies can take about two days
3. Surfshark: Fast Speeds on Unlimited Devices
On a MacBook, Surfshark lost about 31 percent of our download speed, yet nearby servers on other platforms lost only 7-10 percent. That spread matters less to the buyer it suits best, a household that wants one paid plan covering every phone, laptop and TV. It scores 8.6/10 in our Surfshark review.
Long routes cost almost as much as the Mac app did. Transatlantic hops lost roughly a quarter of our speed, and uploads dropped much more than downloads. Netflix worked across regions without detection, and the kill switch cut internet access the instant the VPN dropped.
There is no free plan, but a 7-day free trial runs through the iOS and Android app stores. Starter costs $2.49 a month on the two-year plan, with 4,500+ servers in 100 countries. Surfshark is based in the Netherlands and passed Deloitte no-logs assurance in 2023 and again in 2025.
Pros
- Unlimited simultaneous devices
- Native Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV apps that made setup painless
- RAM-only servers
Cons
- Much slower on macOS and long-distance routes
- Upload speed falls far more than download
- Renewal price is much higher than the intro rate
4. Windscribe: Best Free Plan With Generous Data
Windscribe's Los Angeles server reached 773 Mbps on our gigabit line, while Hong Kong crawled at about 14 Mbps. Route choice matters more here than with any other pick, but the free plan earns its place for another reason: it is the free pick when you need protection on more than one device. It scores 8.5/10 in our Windscribe review.
You get 2GB a month by default, rising to 10GB once you confirm an email address. Free servers sit in about 10 countries you choose yourself (Windscribe rotates which locations are free, so the count varies), and the free plan keeps the full feature set, including the R.O.B.E.R.T. tracker blocker and the firewall that works as a kill switch.
Between those two extremes, New York reached 508 Mbps and Seattle 338 Mbps, while London stayed under 200 Mbps. Free servers usually kept pace with Pro until congestion hit, then dropped by up to 90 percent, roughly twice in three hours of use. Netflix access was inconsistent, and support runs through a chatbot rather than a person.
Pro costs $9 a month or $69 a year and covers 69 countries. On logging, a Greek court dismissed charges against Windscribe's CEO on April 11, 2025, accepting that Windscribe held no user logs.
Pros
- Up to 10GB of free data a month
- Unlimited devices, even on the free plan
- Open-source apps
Cons
- Congestion causes sudden speed drops on free servers
- Distant servers are slow
- Chatbot support only
5. Private Internet Access: Fast VPN for Torrenting
On a 1 Gbps line, Private Internet Access topped out at about 299 Mbps on a Seattle WireGuard server, roughly 70 percent below capacity. That makes it a weak pick for raw gigabit speed but a strong one for people who download large files over P2P. It scores 8.4/10 in our Private Internet Access review, largely thanks to how much of the app you can configure.
On ordinary broadband the picture is much better: nearby servers lost only about 4-5 percent. On a faster line, nearby servers delivered 150-200+ Mbps, while routes to Australia and Singapore dropped sharply. Port forwarding works on non-US servers, but the forwarded port changed with every reconnect, so expect to update your torrent client. Streaming is weak: US and UK Netflix no longer unblock, and Disney+ and Hulu detect the VPN.
There is no free plan. The monthly plan costs $11.95, and PIA rotates long-term deal lengths and bonus months by date and region. Servers cover 91 countries plus all 50 US states. PIA is US-based, owned by Kape Technologies since 2019, and Deloitte completed its third no-logs assurance for PIA on December 19, 2025.
Pros
- Port forwarding for faster torrent seeding
- Unlimited simultaneous connections
- Open-source apps and RAM-only servers
Cons
- Large speed loss on gigabit lines and long-haul routes
- Poor streaming unblocking
- Long settings list overwhelms beginners at first
6. PrivadoVPN: Free Alternative for Streaming
Connecting to PrivadoVPN often took 15-25 seconds, against about 5 seconds for the top services here, and its small network makes speed vary sharply with distance and server load. It is still the free option to try if Netflix is the reason you installed a VPN in the first place. It scores 7.5/10 in our PrivadoVPN review.
The free plan gives you 10GB every 30 days on 1 device across 13 server locations, with no credit card. PrivadoVPN has changed how its free tier behaves at the cap: it either slows to 1 Mbps or pauses until the allowance resets. Hulu and Prime Video only work on the paid app.
Nearby servers kept around 80 percent of line speed on ordinary broadband. On a faster line, US servers passed 200 Mbps and the UK managed about 129 Mbps. Distant servers lost up to three quarters and buffered HD video. The kill switch also overrides split tunneling, so you can't run both, and support is email-only.
Paid plans cost $10.99 a month, with a promotional 24-month rate that renews higher, and cover 10 connections in roughly 50 countries. PrivadoVPN is run by Privado Networks AG in Switzerland. Audit status can change, but as of September 2026 no independent no-logs audit has been published.
Pros
- Free Netflix access, which few free VPNs manage
- Generous free allowance that resets every 30 days
- Clean desktop apps that explain each setting
Cons
- No independent no-logs audit
- Weak speeds on distant servers
- Email-only support with inconsistent replies
7. Hotspot Shield: Fast Free Speeds (With Privacy Trade-offs)
Our Hotspot Shield results swung from one test round to the next. The best US runs hit 150-270 Mbps, while one round landed at 76 Mbps in Seattle and UK servers came in around 45 Mbps. That makes it the speed-first free option, not the privacy choice. It scores 6.5/10 in our Hotspot Shield review, the lowest on this list.
Its speed reputation is partly earned. Top10VPN's speed rankings put it first of 59 VPNs, and Hotspot Shield markets itself as the "World's Fastest VPN" on that basis. Uploads slowed sharply in our runs, though. Free-tier speed also depends on platform, and Security.org reports a 2 Mbps cap on mobile. In our runs, free servers were at least twice as slow as paid ones, and streaming on the free tier buffered often.
The free Basic plan covers 1 device with no credit card, but it only reaches US-based servers, and its data allowance has differed between app versions. On mobile it plays unskippable video ads when the app opens and when you connect or disconnect. Premium costs $12.99 monthly.
Privacy is the weak spot. Hotspot Shield is US-based and run by Pango, part of Point Wild. Its privacy policy collects your originating IP (deleted on disconnect, per the company), device information, bandwidth usage and aggregated domains visited. The Center for Democracy & Technology filed an FTC complaint over its privacy practices in 2017.
Pros
- Quick connections, in about 7 seconds
- Free plan with a kill switch and split tunneling
- Apps for smart TVs and routers
Cons
- Collects more connection data than the other services here
- Unskippable video ads on the free mobile app
- No no-logs audit, only a 2023 security audit
How We Tested Speed and Ranked These Alternatives
Speed was our starting point, since it is why most people look for a Fast VPN alternative. For each service we compared connected download and upload speeds against the unprotected line, first on nearby servers and then on long-haul routes to the UK, Asia and Australia. We ran those comparisons on an ordinary line of about 100 Mbps and on gigabit connections, because a VPN that loses 5 percent on home broadband can behave very differently on a line ten times faster. We used each provider's fastest protocol, WireGuard or a WireGuard-based option such as NordLynx.
We also checked for DNS, IPv6 and WebRTC leaks, watched whether the kill switch cut traffic when the tunnel dropped, and tried the major streaming services. For every free plan we recorded the data allowance, device limit, ads and behavior at the cap. On privacy we weighed jurisdiction, published audits and court records, not just the wording of each policy. For the Fast VPN baseline, we installed same-named apps and read each listing's data declarations. The final order follows the scores from our full reviews, with speed deciding any tie.
Free vs Paid: What You Give Up for Speed
Free plans are a fair way to replace a Fast VPN app, but they limit your data and make you share a small set of servers with everyone else. For more options beyond speed, see our full roundup of the best free VPNs.
Data Caps and Speed Throttling
Proton VPN is the only service here whose free plan has neither a monthly data allowance nor a speed cap. Windscribe and PrivadoVPN both cap free data at 10GB per month or per 30-day cycle. That covers browsing and messaging but runs out fast if you stream video. Hotspot Shield advertises unlimited free bandwidth, but it pays for that with ads, and its free servers trailed the paid ones in our runs.
Throttling is not always a hard limit. Windscribe's free servers kept pace with Pro most of the time, then dropped sharply when congested, which is harder to plan around than a clear cap.
Server Network Size and Load
Paid plans open the whole network: 140+ countries on Proton VPN, 100 on Surfshark and 91 on PIA. Free users share a much smaller pool. Proton chooses your free server, Windscribe offers about 10 free countries, PrivadoVPN has 13 free locations, and Hotspot Shield's free tier sticks to US-based servers. Fewer servers means more people per server, so free speeds swing more at busy times. Distance matters just as much, as the gap between Windscribe's West Coast and Asian routes in our review above shows.
Is Fast VPN Safe? Why Free VPN Apps Are Risky
Not every free VPN is risky, and Proton VPN and Windscribe show that a free plan can be both safe and useful. The concern with Fast VPN apps is how they make money and how little they tell you about it.
How Free VPN Apps Make Money
Servers cost money, so when a VPN app is free and has nothing worth upgrading to, you are the product. Fast VPN apps earn from ads, optional subscriptions and, in some cases, your data. On Google Play, "Fast VPN: Secure and Unlimited" (500K+ downloads) declares that it may collect and share location and app-activity data with third parties, and that the data can't be deleted. "Fast VPN - Secure Vpn Proxy" (1M+ downloads) declares it may share app activity, app performance and device IDs with third parties.
The App Store is no clearer. "Fast VPN & Proxy Unlimited" shows "No Details Provided" for its privacy label, while "VPN - Fast VPN Proxy" declares usage data used to track you, plus device ID and coarse location collected for third-party advertising.
Logging, Ads, and Malware Risks
Free VPN apps have a documented history of worse problems than ads. CSIRO's study of Android VPN apps, a 2016 CSIRO study run with UNSW, ICSI and UC Berkeley, analysed 283 Android apps that use the VPN permission. Over 38% showed some malware presence, 75% used third-party tracking libraries, and 18% tunneled traffic without encryption. About 66% did not tunnel DNS traffic, and 16% ran proxies that modified web traffic.
The problem has not gone away. A 2025 paper on secret families of VPN apps found three families of Android VPN apps with over 700 million combined Google Play downloads that hid shared ownership, two of which shared hard-coded passwords the researchers used to decrypt traffic. None of these studies named an app called Fast VPN, but they describe the market Fast VPN apps belong to.
The worst case is a free VPN that turns your device into someone else's exit point. In the 911 S5 botnet takedown, US authorities dismantled a residential-proxy network of about 19 million infected IP addresses whose malware spread through free VPN programs such as MaskVPN and DewVPN.
Before you install any free VPN, read the Data safety or App Privacy section of its store listing. If data is shared with third parties, can't be deleted, or no details are given, pick a different app.
How to Choose a Fast VPN Alternative
Start with location. Every service here loses the least speed on nearby servers, so servers close to you matter more than a huge country count.
Next, count your devices. The free plans from Proton VPN, PrivadoVPN and Hotspot Shield cover 1 device, while Windscribe's free plan and paid Surfshark or PIA cover unlimited devices.
Then match the service to your main use. PrivadoVPN is the free way into Netflix, NordVPN and Proton VPN unblocked the widest range on paid plans, and PIA's port forwarding suits torrenting. For privacy, favor an independent no-logs audit or a court record, which rules out PrivadoVPN and Hotspot Shield for now. Unlike Fast VPN apps, every alternative here also runs on desktop platforms, so one account can protect your laptop too.
How to Get Maximum Speed From Any VPN
A VPN always adds some overhead, because traffic is encrypted and routed through an extra server. Our guide on how much a VPN slows down your internet explains where that loss comes from. These habits keep it small.
- Pick a nearby server. Speed drops with distance, so choose the closest location unless you need a specific country.
- Use WireGuard or the provider's fast protocol. Open the app's settings, find the protocol option, and select WireGuard, NordLynx or the equivalent instead of OpenVPN.
- Plug in when it matters. A wired Ethernet connection removes Wi-Fi as a bottleneck.
- Use split tunneling. Send only the apps that need protection through the VPN.
- Skip extra hops. Features like NordVPN's Double VPN add a second server and can cut speed by up to around 80 percent.
If a server feels slow, reconnect to a different server in the same city before you blame the VPN. Server load changes constantly, and a quieter server nearby is often much faster.
Free Trials and Money-Back Guarantees as an Alternative
A refund window lets you test a paid VPN on your own connection before you commit. Hotspot Shield offers the longest, a 45-day money-back guarantee on direct purchases. NordVPN, Surfshark, PIA and PrivadoVPN each offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, and Proton VPN's 30-day guarantee is prorated for unused time. Surfshark also runs a 7-day free trial through the mobile app stores.
Windscribe is the strictest: refunds are only available within 7 days of the first purchase with less than 10GB used, renewals are not refundable, and support asks you to troubleshoot first. If you would rather stay free for good, Proton VPN and Windscribe are genuine long-term options, not trials.
Bottom Line: Which Fast VPN Alternative Should You Use?
Start on Proton VPN's free plan. If its single device isn't enough, add Windscribe's free tier for the other phones and laptops, and move to Surfshark once you'd rather pay one bill than juggle two apps. Pay for PIA only if you seed torrents and can live with weak streaming. Choose PrivadoVPN only for free Netflix, and plan your viewing around the 10GB cap. Install Hotspot Shield only if you accept its data collection in exchange for its best-case speeds.
