Getting online in Comoros usually means mobile data from one of two operators, Comores Telecom or Yas Comores (formerly Telma). No law restricts personal VPN use, and we found no website or platform block in force today. The country did cut the internet after the January 2024 election, though. Also, no VPN provider runs a physical server on the islands.
NordVPN is our top pick. It ties Proton VPN at 9.0/10, and its virtual Comoros servers support both WireGuard and obfuscation on the same location. For each provider we checked Comoros server status, nearby routes, protocol support and independent no-logs audits before ranking it.
Do you need a VPN in Comoros?
For most people the answer is yes, though mainly for privacy rather than for getting around blocks. Day to day, a VPN protects you on hotel and cafe Wi-Fi, keeps banking traffic private and lets you reach streaming libraries from your home country.
Internet access and censorship in Comoros
Roughly a third of Comorians are online. DataReportal's 2026 Comoros report counts 316,000 internet users, or 35.7% of the population, against 760,000 mobile connections. Most people get online through mobile data, since fixed lines are rare and often unstable. Comores Telecom (mobile brand Huri) and Yas Comores carry almost all traffic, and both have run 4G since 2018.
Censorship is limited but not absent. In mid-2013 Comores Telecom cut Skype and Viber, then restored them after public protests. Then, from January 17, 2024, the internet went dark during post-election protests. Access Now's statement on the Comoros blackout records it as the country's first documented shutdown, which lasted one to two days. Messaging was also restricted during the unrest. Internet Society Pulse has recorded no shutdowns in the last 12 months.
Is a VPN legal in Comoros?
Comoros has no VPN-specific law and no law restricting personal VPN use, so VPNs are legal because nothing bans them. The 2021 cybercrime law (Law No. 21-012/AU) does not mention VPNs in the summaries we found. The wider climate is mixed. Freedom House's 2026 Comoros report scores the country 41/100, Partly Free, and notes pressure on the press. A VPN does not make illegal activities legal, so respect local laws.

The best VPNs for Comoros, reviewed
NordVPN
NordVPN lists 2 Comoros servers labelled Moroni, and both support NordLynx (its WireGuard-based protocol) and NordWhisper obfuscation. That pairing gives you a Comorian IP and a disguise on one location. The servers sit outside the country, so they will not shorten your route.
In our testing, download-speed loss averaged around 5 percent on nearby NordLynx servers. Switching to obfuscation needed no extra setup: we picked the Obfuscated Servers category and connected. Those servers gave up a little speed for their disguise. When we had questions, support answered promptly and accurately.
The mobile app feels busy at first, and city selection hides behind a three-dot menu. Prices also climb sharply after the promo term. Our NordVPN review covers its 150-country network and December 2025 Deloitte no-logs audit.
Proton VPN
Proton VPN matches NordVPN's score and adds a usable free tier. Its Comoros entry is a Smart Routing location hosted in London, as Proton's Smart Routing documentation explains, and only paid plans can use it.
Stealth is the feature we would lean on if messaging gets restricted again, and it works on the free plan too. When the Smart protocol struggled to connect, we got through by manually selecting WireGuard or OpenVPN, then Stealth. Download speed held up well on nearby servers, while upload fell off on distant ones.
Support is slower than at rival services, with email replies taking about two days. Refunds are also prorated. VPN Plus costs $9.99 month to month. Our Proton VPN review covers its Swiss jurisdiction and May 2026 Securitum audit.
Surfshark
Surfshark puts no limit on devices. One subscription covers every phone and laptop at home, and setup takes under five minutes from download to a connected server.
On restrictive networks, its NoBorders and Camouflage connections can drop. They held up best for us on OpenVPN over TCP. Latency also jumped on nearby servers, which showed in calls but not in browsing. Live chat answered in under a minute. Our Surfshark review has the full test results.
CyberGhost
CyberGhost is the easiest app here, but the weakest if a network starts filtering VPN traffic. It has no obfuscation or stealth mode.
Its physical Nairobi servers are the closest real location to Comoros among the five picks. The app's rough edge showed up on macOS. We switched from one server to another mid-session, and the app briefly flashed a "no internet" message while the connection dropped. The connection then came back on the new server. Speeds also varied more from session to session than with the top picks. Its 45-day refund window is the longest here, which leaves time to test routes. Our CyberGhost review covers its 7-device limit.
ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN comes last of the five because it has no Comoros location and no WireGuard, but it asks the least of you before connecting. Obfuscation is always on, so there is nothing to configure.
On a phone, Lightway handled the switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data smoothly, and battery use stayed low. Speeds stayed close to baseline too, with ExpressVPN holding roughly 90 to 95 percent of base download speed even during 4K streaming. That headroom suits patchy 4G. It does not offer WireGuard, though Lightway fills the same role.
The apps are beginner-friendly but light on advanced settings. Basic renews at $99.95 a year, as our ExpressVPN review explains.
How we picked VPNs for Comoros
The picks are ordered by our scores for this page, from NordVPN and Proton VPN at 9.0 down to ExpressVPN at 8.2. Within that order, the four Comoros checks described in the introduction decided which job each VPN is best suited to.
How to set up a VPN in Comoros
Whichever pick you choose, setup works the same way. VPN apps download normally from the App Store and Google Play in Comoros, but setting one up and testing it before you arrive means everything is ready the moment you land.
- Subscribe and install the app on each of your devices.
- Choose WireGuard (or Lightway on ExpressVPN) as your protocol.
- Connect to the nearest location that suits your task.
- Leave the VPN on as your phone moves between mobile data and Wi-Fi.
WireGuard is the fastest and most battery-efficient protocol on local mobile data or an eSIM. If a VPN stops connecting, switch to IKEv2 or try a different server location.
Which server locations work best from Comoros
For browsing, East Africa, the Middle East or southern Europe give the lowest latency. Johannesburg is a physical location on every pick, with 16 NordVPN servers there. Paris and Marseille suit French-language services. On limited infrastructure, your base connection is usually the bottleneck, so server choice matters more than raw VPN speed. For streaming, connect to the country where the content is licensed, such as the UK or US.
Getting a Comoros IP address
A Comoros virtual location gives you a Comorian IP for local sites. Your traffic still travels to a server abroad, though, so the route stays just as long. Our guide on how to use a VPN to change your location covers the steps.
Nearby Madagascar and Mauritius locations are virtual too, so they offer no speed edge over Johannesburg or a European server.
Are free VPNs safe to use in Comoros?
Most are not. Free VPNs tend to get crowded, cap data or speed, and some monetise user data.
Proton's free plan is the usable exception. It has no data cap, but its free servers all sit outside Africa and get crowded at peak hours, and you cannot choose the country. See our best free VPN picks for more options.
