Does NordVPN work in India? Yes. It works in India and is legal to use, but NordVPN pulled its physical Indian servers after the 2022 CERT-In rules, and since January 2, 2024 a virtual location has handed out an Indian IP from hardware outside the country.
That split confuses most people who look into NordVPN for India. You can connect from Mumbai or Delhi and keep your traffic away from prying eyes, and you can pick up an Indian IP address while abroad. Does NordVPN Have Servers in India?
Not physical ones. NordVPN offers one virtual India location, listed as Mumbai, that gives you an Indian IP address. NordVPN confirms its India location is virtual and says it released it on January 2, 2024 as an exception, because customers kept asking for it.
The hardware behind that location sits in Singapore. Your traffic is routed through Singapore, while the websites you visit see an address registered to India.
The India location is one of 79 virtual locations NordVPN now runs, after it added about 30 in December 2025. The apps list virtual locations separately from physical ones.
Why NordVPN Removed Its Physical Indian Servers
The trigger was CERT-In's April 2022 directions, dated 28 April 2022 and effective 60 days after they were issued. VPN providers had to keep validated subscriber names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and assigned IPs for 5 years or longer. Every covered company also had to keep system logs for a rolling 180 days inside India and report cyber incidents within 6 hours, with up to one year in prison for non-compliance.
For a no-logs service, those terms were impossible to meet. ExpressVPN and Surfshark announced their exits in June 2022, and NordVPN pulled its physical servers out of India in 2022, shutting them down on June 26, 2022. CERT-In later extended the VPN-provider deadline to September 25, 2022, but the major services had already gone.
How NordVPN's Virtual India Server Works
A virtual location is a server in one country that uses an IP address from another. The CERT-In rules cover infrastructure inside India, so they don't reach NordVPN's India location. You still get the Indian IP that banking apps and Indian streaming services check for.
When we connected to the India location, the app gave us an Indian IP address even though the traffic was exiting through Singapore. The location sits in its own virtual-locations group, so there's no mistaking it for a physical Indian server. There is only one India location, though, with no second city to fall back on when it's congested.

Is It Legal to Use NordVPN in India?
Yes. The 2022 rules regulate VPN providers that run infrastructure in India, not the people who use a VPN service. The one narrow exception is a June 2022 National Informatics Centre directive telling government employees and contractors not to use third-party VPN services for official work.
Legal access isn't the same as an open internet, however. India's internet as partly free, one more reason to keep your online activity encrypted. A VPN never makes an illegal activity legal.
How to Set Up NordVPN in India
Here's how to set up NordVPN in India, from buying a plan to confirming your new Indian IP.
Step 1: Choose a Plan and Create an Account
Choose a plan on NordVPN's website and create an account with your email address. Every plan covers 10 devices at once.
Step 2: Download and Install the App
Download the app for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iOS. On Windows and Mac, the desktop setup wizard made our first-time setup quick, even if the interface feels dated next to newer VPN apps.
Step 3: Log In and Turn On the Kill Switch
Log in, then open Settings → Kill Switch and turn on the internet kill switch. If you're unsure what a kill switch does, it blocks all traffic when the VPN connection drops, so your real IP never slips out. That matters because connections occasionally drop and need an app restart or a server switch, particularly on Android.
Step 4: Pick NordLynx and Connect to a Server
Choose NordLynx in the app's protocol setting, then find India in the virtual-locations list and connect. On mobile the map view is awkward, so we search for India directly instead.

Best NordVPN India Server by Use Case
The NordVPN India location is the only one that gives you an Indian IP, but different tasks suit different servers:
- Indian banking or streaming from abroad: the virtual India (Mumbai) location.
- Everyday privacy inside India: quick connect, since you don't need an Indian IP to stay private.
- Torrenting: the P2P servers, which held steady speeds on large downloads for us.
- Office or college Wi-Fi that blocks VPNs: the obfuscated servers.
NordVPN Speed and Protocols in India
NordLynx, NordVPN's WireGuard-based protocol, gave us the best performance. It lost the least speed, followed by IKEv2, then OpenVPN UDP, with OpenVPN TCP the slowest. On a 200 Mbps Indian line, NordLynx kept downloads fast enough for HD streaming, though upload dropped more sharply.
Latency is the trade-off. Because the India location routes through Singapore, ping runs higher than a domestic server would give, and we measured 119 ms on one India connection. That's fine for streaming, but you'll notice it in fast online games.
For networks that block VPNs, NordWhisper disguises VPN traffic as ordinary web traffic. Outside India, the India location is your only NordVPN route to Indian content on JioHotstar, Netflix India, SonyLIV or Zee5, and results are mixed. Indian streaming services block VPN IP ranges on and off, so the India IP can load JioHotstar one month and refuse it the next.

NordVPN Privacy and Security for Indian Users
NordVPN is based in Panama and runs a no-logs policy, and India's log-retention rules don't apply to hardware outside the country. It has passed six independent no-logs assessments, and the sixth covered its standard, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated servers. Traffic uses AES-256 encryption.

How Much Does NordVPN Cost in India?
NordVPN bills Indian buyers in US dollars, so the rupee charge depends on the exchange rate and GST. On intro promotions, the two-year Basic plan has run at about $3.09 to $3.49 a month, roughly Rs 275 to 297 before tax, and those promotions rotate through the year. Renewal is billed at a much higher rate, and auto-renewal charges are the most common billing complaint, so set a reminder. Payment Options in India
NordVPN accepts credit cards, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, cryptocurrency and app-store billing, though some methods vary by region. PayPal is still offered to Indian buyers, but checkout options can change without notice. UPI doesn't appear on NordVPN's public pricing page, and we wouldn't count on RuPay cards either.
