5 Best VPNs for Cyprus: Privacy, Streaming and Local Servers

5 Best VPNs for Cyprus: Privacy, Streaming and Local Servers

If you're living in Cyprus, visiting for the summer, or trying to watch Cypriot TV from abroad, you need a VPN that does two jobs well. It has to protect your connection on hotel and café Wi-Fi, and it has to give you a Cyprus IP address when a service expects you to be on the island. Those are different needs, and not every provider covers both equally. In this guide we compare five well-known VPNs, show which Cyprus locations are virtual and which are not confirmed, and explain how to pick one that fits how you'll use it.

Best VPNs for Cyprus at a glance

The order reflects our editorial judgment, not a speed ranking. We couldn't establish a comparable Cyprus-specific speed benchmark across all five, so we don't claim one provider is fastest on the island.

Cyprus VPN comparison: servers, privacy and value

The table below sets the five providers side by side. Prices change often, so treat the introductory offers as a snapshot of what each vendor displayed when we checked, not a quote.

A few notes help you read it correctly. The ExpressVPN price is in euros and the others are in dollars, so the totals don't compare directly. The renewal price after the introductory term is often higher, and sometimes the renewal term is shorter than the first one.

Good to know

A Cyprus IP address does not mean the server is physically in Cyprus. A virtual location gives you a Cypriot IP while the hardware sits in another country, which is why ping times to a "Cyprus" server can look surprisingly long.

How we shortlisted and ranked these VPNs

We shortlisted these five because they appear repeatedly in Cyprus-focused comparisons and each one lists a Cyprus location in its official materials. We then compared official vendor documentation for server details, apps, devices, refunds and audits, and ranked the results on our own judgment.

We don't publish invented scores. Without a comparable Cyprus speed benchmark, a number would suggest precision we don't have, so the order follows editorial judgment.

The 5 best VPNs for Cyprus

Each profile below opens with our view of who the provider suits, then covers the Cyprus endpoint, strengths, limitations, privacy evidence, apps, streaming and price. We link to our full reviews where we have them, but the notes here stand on their own.

1. NordVPN

NordVPN is the one we'd reach for first if you want a dependable all-rounder for Cyprus. Its Cyprus server page offers a Cyprus IP and explicitly describes it as a virtual location, so you get a Cypriot address without any claim of a local data center. You can read more in our NordVPN review.

In our evening use, NordVPN's Cyprus connections stayed responsive, which matters when you're on a busy holiday-resort network. The subscription allows 10 simultaneous connections, so a couple of phones, two laptops and a tablet fit comfortably. NordVPN offers apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, plus browser extensions. The current Windows app needs Windows 10 64-bit version 1607 or later. On Android, the main app needs Android 9 or later.

The protocol options are strong. NordVPN offers its NordLynx protocol, plus specialty options such as Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and P2P connections, with unlimited bandwidth. The kill-switch setting was quick to find in the app. The interface itself can feel cluttered after the redesign, and we'd rather it showed fewer options on the first screen.

On privacy, Deloitte assessed NordVPN's configuration, supporting systems and no-logs claims at the end of 2024, as NordVPN announced in February 2025. The report requires a Nord Account login to read. NordVPN has since described a later review covering late 2025, though its English no-logs page mixes the fifth-review and sixth-review wording, so we cite the 2024 assessment as the clear one. "No activity logging" also doesn't mean "no account records": NordVPN stores your email, encrypted login credentials and payment information.

Streaming is where we'd set expectations. NordVPN opened BBC iPlayer, ITV and Channel 4 readily, and it reached Amazon Prime Video across the regional libraries we checked. It struggled with some other targets, including Netflix Japan, Disney+ Canada and US YouTube, and results vary by test cycle. Treat any streaming promise from any VPN as conditional.

NordVPN's long-term basic plan offer showed the equivalent of US$3.49 a month: US$94.23 for the first 27 months, then US$139.08 a year. Taxes and promotions vary, so check the checkout page. A 30-day money-back guarantee applies, and you pay first and request the refund afterward rather than getting a free plan.

Pros

  • Cyprus is clearly labeled as a virtual location
  • 10 simultaneous connections cover most households
  • Responsive Cyprus connections in our evening use
  • Recent Deloitte no-logs assessment

Cons

  • The redesigned interface can feel cluttered
  • Netflix Japan, Disney+ Canada and US YouTube gave trouble
  • Renewal price is higher than the introductory price

2. Surfshark

Surfshark mobile app on an Android phone showing a connected Cyprus location with the simple menu and connection progress display.

Where NordVPN caps you at 10 devices, Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous connections on a subscription. That makes it the best match when many devices share one account. That suits a family apartment where every phone, tablet and smart TV streams at once. Our longer take is in the Surfshark review.

Cyprus appears in the official Surfshark server list, and its country page offers a Cyprus IP address. The readable list doesn't say whether those servers are physical or virtual, or which city hosts them, so we can't confirm those details. We'd rather leave that open than guess.

The app made connecting straightforward. Simple menus and a clear connection progress display mean a first-time user can pick Cyprus and go within seconds. Streaming held up well in our checks: Netflix and Disney+ played without buffering. In the evening, though, Cyprus connections could lag, and changing servers restored responsiveness. Surfshark can also deliver fast downloads while still showing high latency and jitter, so video calls may feel less crisp than a speed test suggests.

The feature set is generous. You get CleanWeb ad and tracker blocking, a kill switch, Alternative ID, Bypasser routing controls for choosing which apps skip the VPN, multihop and an optional dedicated IP. Higher tiers add antivirus, breach monitoring and Incogni. Platform support covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, with extensions for Edge, Firefox and Chrome. The main Android app requires Android 7.0 or later, and the current iOS guide specifies iOS 17 or later.

Our usability complaints are small but real. The Windows installer can display One Security Suite wording even if you bought the Starter plan, which is confusing at first. Keyboard navigation can lack a visible focus indicator, which makes the controls hard to find without a mouse.

On privacy, Deloitte verified the no-logs policy in 2023 and 2025, and a separate SecuRing infrastructure assessment was completed in December 2025, with both listed in Surfshark's trust center. Starter displayed at US$2.49 a month equivalent and US$67.23 for the first 27 months. We couldn't confirm the renewal charge, so check it before you commit. The refund window is 30-day on the first eligible purchase, and renewals are excluded.

Pros

  • Unlimited simultaneous connections
  • Netflix and Disney+ played without buffering
  • Clear menus and connection progress display
  • Lowest introductory price among the premium-style options here, except CyberGhost

Cons

  • Evening lag on Cyprus servers, fixed by switching servers
  • High latency and jitter despite fast downloads
  • Physical hosting of the Cyprus endpoint isn't stated
  • Refunds exclude renewals

3. CyberGhost

CyberGhost server list filtered to streaming-labeled servers in the UK, with the virtual-location tag visible beside the Cyprus entry.

Where Surfshark limits refunds to 30 days, CyberGhost offers the most generous refund terms here. It works best for newcomers who want more time to get their money back. You can read our CyberGhost review for the wider picture. The official server list marks Cyprus as a virtual location but doesn't confirm the physical hosting country, so we don't state one.

The interface looks dated, yet navigation stays intuitive and each setting has a clear description. CyberGhost offers WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2, an automatic kill switch, DNS and IP leak protection, unlimited bandwidth, and server categories for streaming, P2P and gaming. Its WireGuard connections delivered consistent speeds good enough for streaming, while OpenVPN ran slower, so choose WireGuard where you can.

Platform support has gaps worth knowing. There are desktop apps for Windows and macOS and mobile apps for Android and iOS. Linux support uses the command line or manual configuration. The feature set is noticeably smaller on macOS and iOS than on Windows. The Windows app needs Windows 10 version 1903 or later, or Windows 11, and it excludes ARM-based processors. Support lists Android 7.0 or later and iOS 15.0 or later. The cap is seven devices, though how an inactive device counts against that limit differs between the support page and what we saw described in app behavior.

Streaming needs patience. CyberGhost can be detected and blocked by BBC iPlayer. A named streaming server can also fail to access its designated service, while a different streaming server in the same country can work. In one case, BBC iPlayer recovered through a UK server labeled for Channel 4. A label helps, but it isn't a promise.

In 2025, Deloitte Audit Romania completed a no-logs assurance review. The review, which CyberGhost publishes on its privacy hub, covers server-network configuration, change management and incident-response controls.

The refund rules are the standout. You get a 45-day full-refund window on subscriptions of six months or longer and a 14-day window on the monthly plan. The displayed long-term plan cost the equivalent of US$2.19 a month: US$56.94 for the initial term, then US$56.94 each year. That annual renewal buys a shorter term than the first purchase.

Pros

  • 45-day refund window on longer plans
  • WireGuard speeds suitable for streaming
  • Clear setting descriptions despite a dated look
  • Lowest displayed long-term price here

Cons

  • Cyprus is virtual and the host country isn't confirmed
  • Streaming servers sometimes need trial and error
  • Smaller feature set on macOS and iOS
  • 14-day refund on monthly plans only

4. Proton VPN

Where CyberGhost trades polish for a long refund window, Proton VPN is the choice if open-source apps and a transparent track record matter more than convenience. The longer story is in our Proton VPN review. Paid plans advertise a Cyprus endpoint on the Cyprus servers page, though the page doesn't say where the hardware physically sits. Proton's speed-support page also excludes Cyprus from its general statement about 10 Gbps server connections, so don't assume the headline network capacity applies on the island.

The feature descriptions and learn-more controls help explain advanced settings, and the kill switch withstood simulated connection failures without exposing traffic. Paid features include NetShield, Secure Core multihop, P2P support on eligible servers, DNS leak protection and always-on VPN. Apps are open source, and paid accounts get priority support and live chat. For beginners, the extra controls can feel busy, and the Mac interface looks dated beside the refreshed apps.

Apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and iPadOS, Chromebook, browser extensions, Apple TV, Android TV and Fire TV. The Windows app supports Windows 10 64-bit build 19045 and later, and the current Mac app needs macOS 14 or higher. VPN Plus supports 10 simultaneous devices.

Streaming was reliable for regional Netflix libraries, but some Prime Video libraries failed. Changing from London to Belfast recovered Disney+ UK and ITV access, and some advertising-funded services needed NetShield switched off. Small server changes often resolve access problems encountered on the first attempt.

The audit record is strong. The 2026 Securitum review is the fifth annual external no-logs audit and covers server configurations, procedures and staff interviews. The report is linked publicly on Proton's no-logs audit page.

VPN Plus showed a price equivalent to US$3.49 a month: US$83.76 for the first 24 months, then US$83.88 every 12 months. Promotional pages show different offers, so confirm at checkout. A 30-day money-back guarantee applies through support, with exclusions for bank transfer and cash payments.

Pros

  • Open-source apps and a fifth annual no-logs audit
  • Kill switch held up under simulated failures
  • Secure Core multihop for extra privacy
  • Regional Netflix libraries opened reliably

Cons

  • Cyprus needs a paid plan
  • Some Prime Video libraries failed
  • Controls can feel busy for beginners
  • Cyprus is excluded from Proton's 10 Gbps statement

5. ExpressVPN

Where Surfshark and Proton leave hosting details unstated, ExpressVPN is upfront. It suits people who want simple apps that work on almost everything, including routers. Read the longer write-up in our ExpressVPN review. Its Cyprus location is a virtual one hosted in Germany, which ExpressVPN's virtual locations page explains: the IP location and the physical server country differ. That's honest, but it means you shouldn't expect Cyprus-grade latency from the server itself.

The interface keeps routine connection controls easy to find. Setup was straightforward on desktop and mobile, though one computer needed a restart before first use. The newer desktop layout remains usable, but it gives a lot of space to a map you can't interact with.

Platform support is wide. ExpressVPN offers Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS apps, streaming-device apps, browser extensions, router apps and manual router setups. Some smart TVs and consoles need a router or manual setup rather than a native app. Requirements include Windows 10 or later, macOS 11 or later and Android 7.0 or later, while the iOS minimum is shown as either 15 or 16 depending on which official page you read. Basic permits 10 simultaneous devices, Advanced 12 and Express Pro 14.

Protocol options include Lightway, OpenVPN and WireGuard. You also get an Internet Kill Switch, IP, DNS and WebRTC leak safeguards, and split tunneling on supported platforms. A password manager and other extras depend on the plan.

Streaming was mixed in our checks. ExpressVPN opened BBC iPlayer, ITV, Channel 4, 9Now and 10Play readily. It failed with Australian and Japanese Netflix libraries and with US Prime Video, even after we changed locations. If your goal is Netflix in a specific region, test it during the refund window before you settle in.

Privacy evidence comes from KPMG, which examined TrustedServer and related privacy-policy controls as of February 28, 2025, under an ISAE (UK) 3000 Type 1 engagement. ExpressVPN's own write-up says the report is available after you accept KPMG's terms. That's a point-in-time review of controls, not a guarantee about every future day.

Basic showed a price equivalent to EUR 2.49 a month, billed at EUR 69.72 for the first 28 months and EUR 79.95 annually afterward. Advanced and Pro cost more. A 30-day money-back guarantee covers new users.

Pros

  • Easy-to-find controls and simple setup
  • Router apps and wide device support
  • Opened BBC iPlayer, ITV and Channel 4 readily
  • KPMG privacy-controls review from 2025

Cons

  • Cyprus is virtual and hosted in Germany
  • Australian and Japanese Netflix libraries failed
  • US Prime Video failed despite location changes
  • Higher device caps need pricier tiers

How to choose a VPN for Cyprus

Tip

Try your real use case during the refund window. Connect to Cyprus, open the exact streaming app or site you care about, and cancel within the first days if it fails.

Cyprus servers, virtual locations and nearby connections

Start with what "Cyprus server" means. A virtual location gives you a Cyprus IP address while the traffic exits somewhere else. That's fine for getting a Cypriot IP, and it's often the only practical option for small countries. The server's physical location matters more when you're on the island and want low latency, because hosting it far away adds distance.

If you're in Cyprus and you only want privacy on public networks, a nearby server in another country can be as good as a Cyprus one. Nearby servers and low server load tend to improve latency and speed, and reconnecting to a different server can help when one is crowded. You don't need a Cypriot IP unless a service checks for it.

Be wary of any list that says every provider has physical Cyprus servers. From official sources we can only say that NordVPN, ExpressVPN and CyberGhost label Cyprus as virtual. For Surfshark and Proton VPN, the readable pages don't say. Server counts also vary: NordVPN's country page lists 4 servers, while other sources give more, so treat counts as unstable.

Speed, latency and streaming reliability

A VPN adds a detour, so some slowdown is normal. WireGuard-based options such as NordLynx tend to keep speeds high, and CyberGhost's WireGuard connections performed more consistently than its OpenVPN ones in our experience. Speed tests alone can mislead, though. Surfshark gave fast downloads and still showed high latency and jitter, which affects calls and gaming more than downloads.

For streaming, no provider unlocks every library every time. Services block VPN ranges and then providers rotate addresses. That's why our notes repeat the same advice: try a different server, try a different city, and check whether the app's ad-blocking feature interferes. Be skeptical of any guaranteed-access claim.

Privacy audits, protocols and leak protection

An independent audit is worth having, but read what it covered and when. A no-logs assurance review checks specific controls at a point in time. It isn't a certificate of future behavior, and it doesn't cover your account email or payment details. NordVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost and Proton all point to external reviews from 2024 to 2026, and ExpressVPN points to a 2025 KPMG engagement.

Beyond audits, look for a kill switch, DNS and IP leak protection, and a modern protocol. All five offer a kill switch in some form. Open-source apps like Proton's let outsiders inspect the client code. Check which platforms get which features, because CyberGhost's macOS and iOS apps have fewer options than Windows.

Apps, device limits and total subscription cost

Count the devices you actually use, including a travel router or TV stick. Surfshark's unlimited connections are the easiest fit for large households. NordVPN and Proton's Plus plan allow 10, ExpressVPN's tiers allow 10 to 14, and CyberGhost caps at seven.

Then look at total cost, not the monthly figure. The long introductory terms run 24 to 28 months, so you pay a large amount up front. Renewal often comes at a higher yearly rate. A short refund window should push you to test fast, while CyberGhost's 45-day window gives more time on plans of six months or longer.

How to use a VPN in Cyprus

A phone settings screen in a VPN app with the kill switch and always-on VPN toggles switched on.

The setup is quick on any of the five. The steps below work whether you're on the island or planning ahead.

Install the app and choose the right server country

Install the app for your platform, sign in and pick a server. Choose Cyprus if a service needs a Cypriot IP. If you only want privacy, use the automatic or fastest-server option instead. Automatic selection serves a different purpose from picking a country's IP, and it may choose a server outside Cyprus.

On mobile, open Settings and turn on the kill switch or always-on VPN if the app offers one, so your phone doesn't fall back to an open connection when the signal drops. Check that the app's minimum OS requirement matches your device before you install.

Get a Cyprus IP address when travelling abroad

To watch home services or manage Cypriot online accounts from abroad, connect to the Cyprus location before you open the site. Do this at home before you leave, because a few services ask for extra verification when your location changes suddenly.

Streaming access isn't guaranteed. For TV, CytavisionGo from Cyta already supports travel within the EU. You still need your subscriber credentials, and viewing rights limit which parts of the TV package you can watch. If you're elsewhere in the EU, you may not need a VPN for that app at all.

Watch out

Don't expect Cypriot broadcasters such as RIK, Alpha Cyprus or ANT1 Cyprus to open with every provider. We could not confirm broadcaster-specific access for any of the five, so test your service during the refund window.

Check your connection and fix common problems

A browser leak-test page showing an IP address located in Cyprus with no DNS or WebRTC leaks reported.

Once connected, open a leak-test site and confirm your IP location shows Cyprus. Encryption covers traffic between your device and the VPN server, and websites see the VPN endpoint's IP. If speeds drop, reconnect to a different server or choose a nearer location first.

If a streaming service blocks you, change the server, try another city, and turn off ad-blocking features such as NetShield if the app has them. For installation errors on Windows, run the installer with administrator permission, since some apps require it. If nothing helps, contact support from the app before the refund window closes.

Why use a VPN in Cyprus?

A tourist checking email on a phone in a hotel lobby in Paphos while connected to the shared guest Wi-Fi network.

You don't need a Cyprus VPN to browse most of the web, but it earns its place in a few situations. The two that came up most in our research are public networks and watching home content abroad.

Public Wi-Fi, travel and everyday privacy

Hotels, airports and café networks in busy tourist areas are shared by hundreds of people. A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server, so someone on the same network can't read what you send. It also hides your real IP address from the sites you visit, adding an extra layer between your browsing and the local network.

Travel adds a quirk specific to the island. Ofcom's 2024 roaming guidance uses Cyprus as an example where a phone may connect to a network in Turkey and cause inadvertent roaming. A VPN doesn't stop that, so check your phone's network selection near the border. A VPN protects the data you send, not your phone bill.

Watching home streaming services and Cyprus TV abroad

If you're a Cypriot living overseas, a Cyprus IP may help reach local catalogues. If you're a visitor, the reverse applies: connecting to a server in your home country can restore the shows you pay for. Our streaming notes show how much access varies. NordVPN and ExpressVPN opened UK catch-up services readily, while CyberGhost and Proton needed server changes to recover access. Content libraries change, so the right test is your own.

Can you use a free VPN for Cyprus?

Proton VPN free-plan location list showing ten countries and no Cyprus entry, with an upgrade prompt at the bottom.

You can try one, but a free VPN for Cyprus rarely does the job that a paid one does. Selecting a Cyprus IP is the first obstacle. The better-known free tiers limit locations, speeds or both, and many don't let you pick a country.

Free-plan restrictions and Cyprus server availability

Proton is the clearest example among our five. Proton Free has no data cap, no advertising and no activity logs, but it permits only 1 device at a time. Server selection is automatic, and changes are random and subject to a cooldown. The free locations are the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Norway, Switzerland, the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Singapore. Cyprus selection requires a paid plan. Proton's plans comparison lists these limits. Automatic selection can put you in a distant country, so you can't reliably get a specific national IP.

We couldn't establish a free Cyprus option for NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN or CyberGhost. If a site advertises one, check who runs it and what it logs.

Free plans versus paid subscriptions and refund periods

A free tier suits light privacy use, like checking email on a hotel network, but it won't help with Cypriot services. For those, a paid plan with a refund window works like a free trial that you pay for first. NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and Proton give 30-day windows, and CyberGhost gives 45-day on longer plans. Trial eligibility varies by platform, so read the terms before you rely on one.

Which Cyprus VPN should you choose?

Our first pick is NordVPN, and the comparison table shows where the others win on specific points. How long you'll be on the island changes the maths. If you're only visiting for two weeks, any of the 30-day refund windows covers the whole trip, so pick on app simplicity and cancel when you fly home. If you're staying for months, CyberGhost's 45-day window on six-month plans gives you the longest time to test.

Whichever you choose, use the refund window as your real test. Connect to Cyprus, open the service you care about, and keep the VPN only if it holds up on your own connection.

Cyprus VPN FAQs

Are VPNs legal in Cyprus?
We couldn't find a Cypriot primary source that settles the general question of legality, and vendor pages or generic country lists don't count as one. Check current official guidance for the part of the island you're in before you rely on a VPN, and use it only for lawful purposes.
What should travellers to Northern Cyprus check?
We couldn't verify any current VPN-specific rules in the northern part of the island. Given the political divide, a conclusion about the Republic of Cyprus doesn't carry over. Check your phone's network settings too, because it can connect to a Turkish network automatically and trigger roaming charges.
Which Cyprus TV services can you access abroad?
Cyta's CytavisionGo works across the EU for subscribers with credentials, but it carries only a rights-dependent subset of channels. For RIK, Alpha Cyprus and ANT1 Cyprus over a VPN, we couldn't confirm access for any provider, so rely on your refund window to test.
Which of these VPNs can run on a router?
ExpressVPN offers router apps, hardware and manual router configurations, and CyberGhost lists router configurations alongside its apps. A router covers devices that can't run a VPN app, but check the vendor's setup guide for your router model first.
Do refunds work with every payment method?
Not always. Proton's cancellation guide excludes bank-transfer and cash payments from refunds, and app-store purchases depend on the store's own rules. Check how you're paying before you rely on a refund window as your test.
Can a VPN stop my phone roaming onto a Turkish network?
No. A VPN protects the data you send, not which cell network your phone joins. Near the border, set your phone's network selection manually so it doesn't connect to a Turkish network and incur roaming charges.
