Whether you are heading to Egypt or already live there, the problem is rarely the app alone when your VPN connects but websites will not load. A VPN has to get through network filtering first, and then it has to keep your traffic private once it does. That is why the features that matter here are obfuscation, protocol choice and a sensible fallback plan, not the size of a server list.
NordVPN is the pick we would install first, mainly because of its obfuscated servers, its 10 simultaneous device connections and its smooth streaming access. ExpressVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and Private Internet Access each earn a place for a different reason. One distinction runs through this whole guide: use a foreign server to get online from inside Egypt. You need an Egyptian IP address when you are abroad and want to appear to be at home.
We built this comparison from vendor documentation and support pages, and we flag where those sources disagree.

How we evaluate VPNs for Egypt
We judged each provider on documented criteria rather than on a single speed number. In Egypt, a country entry on a server list says little about whether the connection works, so we did not treat the listing as proof of connectivity. Every price, device limit and refund term in this guide comes from the vendor's own pages, and where two official pages disagree we say so.
Connection reliability, obfuscation and privacy
Reliability starts with the tools a provider offers for networks that interfere with VPN traffic: its obfuscation method, the protocols it supports and the platforms each works on. Privacy covers the kill switch, DNS and WebRTC leak protection, and the logging policy. We counted a finding only when it appeared in the hands-on material we gathered. No source gave us a reliable, Egypt-specific success rate or a universal list of working servers, so we make no such claim. General speed results do not measure how a given Egyptian ISP behaves.
Streaming, calls, speed and total subscription cost
To evaluate streaming, calls and speed, we examined specific results for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and BBC iPlayer access, along with protocol performance on long-distance routes. For cost we looked at the whole commitment: the promotional price, the renewal, the device allowance and the refund terms. A low monthly figure that renews at a much higher rate is not a bargain, and we say so in each section.
The 5 best VPNs for Egypt
Each section below leads with what makes that provider distinctive for Egypt, then covers cost, limits and who should skip it.
1. NordVPN: Obfuscation and security features
NordVPN starts with a practical advantage for Egypt: its obfuscated server category is built for networks that interfere with VPN traffic. Current support instructions route that category through NordWhisper. On Windows, macOS, Android and iOS you reach it through Specialty Servers, and the Linux app exposes NordWhisper in its connection settings. NordWhisper works on all five of those platforms, but it does not work with Dedicated IP, Meshnet or Onion Over VPN servers.
When we set the app up on a desktop, the onboarding wizard explained each feature as the app started, which made the first connection less of a guessing game. The interface gives you more controls than a connect-only app, and NordLynx, the WireGuard-based protocol, delivered strong download performance. Streaming access also held up: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu worked in every streaming check we used. The one irritation we found is that local-network invisibility can interfere with printers and smart TVs, so turn it off at home.
The feature list is long. Beyond NordWhisper you get NordLynx, OpenVPN, a kill switch, DNS leak protection, split tunneling on supported platforms, Double VPN and Onion Over VPN. Malware-protection extras depend on the paid tier you choose.
The Egyptian IP question needs care. NordVPN's official location list includes Egypt, yet older comparison tables omit it and some third-party pages describe the endpoint as virtual. Treat the listed endpoint as available in current apps, but check your own app version. Even then, an Egyptian IP does not prove that the connection works from an Egyptian ISP.
On price, localized official pages show the Basic plan at roughly $3.49 per month, or $94.23 upfront for 27 months, while NordVPN's own pricing explainer advertises $2.99 per month for a two-year offer. Promotions and regional storefronts differ, so the checkout total and the included months decide the actual cost. Renewal is a separate matter: one localized Basic quote shows $139.08 per year, and the renewal amount can change with advance email notice. The 30-day money-back guarantee applies, and canceling auto-renewal is a separate action from requesting a refund. NordVPN describes a Google Play trial on Android for eligible first-time users, but there is no permanent free plan.
Pros
- Obfuscated servers through NordWhisper on all five major platforms
- Strong NordLynx download performance and reliable streaming access
- 10 simultaneous devices and a 30-day refund window
Cons
- Local-network invisibility can block printers and TVs
- Egypt endpoint listings differ between sources and app versions
- Renewal pricing is higher than the promotional rate
Best for: Travelers who want obfuscation and streaming in one app. Skip if: You need more than 10 devices on a single account.
2. ExpressVPN: Automatic obfuscation and ease of use
Where NordVPN gives you a menu of specialty servers, ExpressVPN is the easiest of the five to live with when you do not want to think about protocols. It applies obfuscation automatically on supported platforms, and its default troubleshooting advice is to leave the protocol on Automatic so the app picks one that suits the network, usually Lightway. You can also choose OpenVPN or WireGuard by hand.
Setup was straightforward across devices, and QR-code setup removed most of the friction on a streaming stick. The refreshed apps remain easy to operate, although the older interface was more streamlined and we miss it a little. Support starts with a chatbot, but you can escalate to human agents, whom we found helpful. On speed, Lightway Turbo delivers strong long-distance performance on Windows, while regular Lightway can perform less well and WireGuard can be faster on other platforms. If a long-haul connection feels slow, switching protocols is the first thing to try.
Streaming is mostly smooth, with one wrinkle: some Netflix regions took repeated connection attempts before playback began. Persistence usually paid off, but expect an occasional retry.
For people abroad who want an Egyptian IP address, ExpressVPN offers a virtual Cairo endpoint. It provides an Egyptian IP while the traffic actually runs through hardware in another region. That is fine for looking like you are in Egypt, but it is not evidence of a server physically inside the country.
The platform details are where we stay cautious. The vendor confirms automatic obfuscation on supported platforms, but the features page does not lay out every protocol and device combination. Check that your device is covered before you rely on it.
The Basic plan supports 10 simultaneous devices and Advanced supports 12. Promotional pricing for Basic is about $2.99 per month, or $83.72 for the first 28 months, then $99.95 annually, and Advanced is about $4.49 per month, or $125.72 for the first 28 months, then $119.95 annually. Those are upfront promotional terms, and currency, tax and renewal terms can change. The 30-day refund window covers first-time direct subscribers, and purchases made through the Apple App Store or Google Play are excluded from the vendor guarantee. Mobile trial length varies by offer and storefront, so the length shown on the in-app enrollment screen applies.
Pros
- Automatic obfuscation on supported platforms with no menus to dig through
- Lightway, OpenVPN and WireGuard, plus an Internet Kill Switch and private DNS
- Virtual Cairo endpoint for an Egyptian IP abroad
Cons
- Premium pricing for the Advanced tier
- Some Netflix regions need repeated attempts
- App-store purchases fall outside the refund guarantee
Best for: Anyone who wants a connect-and-go app that handles protocol choice itself. Skip if: You want to tune every routing setting by hand.
3. Surfshark: Value and multiple devices
Where ExpressVPN caps you at 10 or 12 devices, Surfshark is the value pick for a simple reason. One account covers an unlimited number of simultaneous devices, with no fixed household cap. For a family in Cairo or a traveling group sharing phones, laptops and a router, that matters more than a few cents on the monthly rate.
Its obfuscation works differently from the others. OpenVPN over UDP or TCP uses obfuscated servers, and Camouflage is the name for that automatic obfuscation. OpenVPN is listed for Android, macOS, Windows, iOS and Linux. WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 are the documented protocols, and a newer option called Dausos is limited to the macOS App Store app. We found a concrete benefit in switching protocols: moving from WireGuard to OpenVPN established a connection on a filtered office network where WireGuard failed. The trade-off is that Camouflage cannot be turned off separately from OpenVPN, which limits fine-grained control.
Day to day, most controls are simple toggles. There are fewer advanced settings than in Private Internet Access or Proton VPN, which suits beginners and frustrates tinkerers. Alternative ID is convenient to reach from the Android app when you are filling in a registration form. Download performance stays strong, but streaming access is less consistent than with the strongest competing services.
Obfuscation and connection reliability vary by protocol, platform and network. On Egyptian networks the Surfshark app can show connected while websites still fail to load. If that happens, change protocol or server before assuming the subscription is at fault.
An Egyptian IP location is offered, but it is virtual. The endpoint is physically hosted in France, so it is useful for appearing Egyptian online and is not proof of hardware inside Egypt.
On cost, the Starter offer is about $2.49 per month, or $67.23 upfront for 27 months, and the page shows One at the same promotional price. Equal first-term prices do not mean equal renewal costs, and the Starter renewal is quoted at $79 per year, subject to currency and taxes. The 30-day guarantee applies only to the initial purchase, not recurring payments. Prepaid, gift-card and certain reseller purchases are excluded.
Pros
- Unlimited simultaneous devices on one subscription
- Low promotional monthly price
- Kill switch, CleanWeb filtering, Bypasser split tunneling and NoBorders assistance
Cons
- Streaming access is less consistent than the leaders
- Camouflage cannot be switched off apart from OpenVPN
- The 30-day guarantee covers only the initial purchase
Best for: Households and travelers with many devices. Skip if: Streaming reliability is your top priority.
4. Proton VPN: Privacy features and free-plan limits
Where Surfshark keeps things simple, Proton VPN is the privacy-first option, and it is the only provider here with a permanent free plan. That free plan has unlimited data, randomly assigned locations, an audited no-logs policy, a kill switch and DNS leak protection. It supports just 1 simultaneous device connection, while VPN Plus supports 10.
Stealth is Proton's anti-censorship protocol, available on free and paid plans. Documented support covers Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and iPadOS, and Android TV. Linux is murkier. The support guide still tells you to enable the Proton Protocols beta toggle for Stealth in the Linux GUI, but a recent news report calls the Linux release stable. Linux availability therefore depends on the installed app. There is also a reason to keep a backup plan: OONI's censorship findings record blocking of Proton privacy services in Egypt beginning in 2023. That is a block on Proton's websites, not proof that the VPN itself fails, but it can complicate signup and downloads from inside the country.
Here is the part that trips up free-plan users. Egyptian IP endpoints are paid-only, and Proton Free does not include Egypt at all. You can still use the free plan from within Egypt if it manages to connect to an available foreign endpoint, but you cannot choose where.
The apps are feature-dense, and they can require more navigation than ExpressVPN or Surfshark. The Mac interface also looks older than the refreshed apps. The kill switch held up during forced-interruption checks, exactly as a privacy tool should. On a Mac, though, it can interfere with casting to an Apple TV. Download speeds stayed consistent with little fluctuation, and NetShield removed many ads and trackers without making page loads feel slower. Disney Plus access can fail even when other major streaming services work.
VPN Plus adds NetShield, Secure Core, P2P support, streaming support, split tunneling and a browser extension, and Proton Unlimited bundles other Proton products. The pricing page shows VPN Plus at about $3.49 per month on the two-year selection, while the signup route shows $71.76 for the first 24 months at about $2.99 per month. Promotional routes differ, the selected checkout offer controls, and the introductory figure does not establish renewal pricing. To receive a full refund, you must cancel and submit your request within the 30-day window. Cash and bank transfers are excluded.
Pros
- Permanent free plan with unlimited data
- Stealth protocol on free and paid plans
- Kill switch that held up in forced-interruption checks
Cons
- Free plan has no Egyptian server and only 1 device
- Dense apps need more navigation
- Disney Plus access can fail
Best for: Privacy-focused users who want a free fallback. Skip if: You need an Egyptian IP address on a free plan.
5. Private Internet Access: Customization and connection options
Where Proton asks you to learn a dense app, Private Internet Access is the tinkerer's choice outright. Its granular app, IP and DNS controls reward users who want to tune routing behavior, and the feature list backs that up: OpenVPN and WireGuard, configurable encryption, split tunneling, automation rules, MACE filtering, a kill switch, open-source apps, a no-logs policy, RAM-only servers and an optional dedicated IP.
The connection tool most relevant to Egypt is desktop Multi-Hop and Obfuscation. It routes through a Shadowsocks or SOCKS5 proxy before the VPN endpoint, so it is a proxy-plus-VPN path and not two VPN exits. The vendor warns that the extra routing can add latency and cut speed, and advises against it on already unstable links or for latency-sensitive video calls and gaming. We also found a small trap: switching back to WireGuard can stop the OpenVPN-dependent Multi-Hop configuration without a clear warning. After changing protocols, confirm that the setting still applies.
Installation and initial setup were straightforward on Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. Sustained connections stayed stable even though peak download performance trails faster competitors. DNS and WebRTC leak checks passed, and the kill switch blocked traffic during tested failures. For content, BBC iPlayer and other regional services can work, while some US YouTube content remains inaccessible.
PIA is also candid about the Egypt problem. It lists Egypt among countries that actively restrict VPN access and where connecting can be difficult. Connectivity depends on your Egyptian ISP, the server IP, network filtering and your connection method. Egypt appears in the official in-app location list, so you can pick an Egyptian IP from abroad, but a country entry does not establish reliable access from inside Egypt.
Support findings are mixed. Customer support can be slow or unresponsive, yet email replies can arrive promptly and live chat can be faster. The chat interface is easier to find on the main site than on support pages.
On cost, the official offer is about $2.03 per month for three years plus three extra months, then $79 every three years. The monthly plan is $11.95, and the annual plan is $47.88 for the first year and renews at $47.88. Those are USD prices, and taxes, currency and later renewal changes can affect the charge. Subscriptions carry unlimited simultaneous connections, and new subscribers get a 30-day money-back guarantee, while app-store purchases follow their own refund terms.
Pros
- Granular app, IP and DNS controls
- Unlimited simultaneous connections
- Lowest promotional monthly rate and leak checks that passed
Cons
- Peak download speeds trail faster rivals
- Support experiences are mixed
- Multi-Hop adds latency and can quietly stop after a protocol switch
Best for: Users who want fine control and long, stable sessions. Skip if: You want a no-fuss app that decides everything for you.
Which VPN features matter in Egypt?
Features matter differently in Egypt than in a country with an open internet. Three groups decide whether a VPN is useful: how it handles filtering, how it protects you once connected, and how forgiving the business terms are if it does not work.
An Egyptian server list entry tells you where your traffic appears to come from. It does not tell you whether your connection will work from an Egyptian ISP.
Obfuscation and protocol support on your device
Obfuscation tries to hide the fingerprint that identifies VPN traffic. It helps, but it has limits: research on obfuscated OpenVPN has shown that some obfuscated configurations remain identifiable. Do not treat any provider's obfuscation as invisible. To understand how different obfuscation modes behave, read obfuscation modes explained, which uses a provider we do not rank here as an example.
Check your own device against the provider's documentation before you travel. The platform lists are in the reviews above; the two caveats worth carrying with you are that PIA's obfuscation is a desktop feature and that ExpressVPN does not publish a full device matrix.
Kill switch, DNS leak protection and logging policies
A kill switch stops your traffic if the tunnel drops, which matters most on unreliable networks. DNS leak protection keeps your lookups from reaching your ISP. All five providers offer both. Logging policies differ in wording: ExpressVPN states a no-activity, no-connection-logging policy on RAM-only TrustedServer infrastructure, Proton has an audited no-logs policy, and PIA has a no-logs policy with RAM-only servers.
Be realistic about what that buys you. A VPN routes your traffic through another network and changes your apparent public IP, which shifts trust to the VPN operator. HTTPS still protects page contents in transit, and a VPN does not remove tracking through accounts, GPS, cookies or fingerprinting.
Server locations, support and refund conditions
Server locations decide whether you can get an Egyptian IP abroad, while foreign exits are what you need inside Egypt. Support matters when a connection fails at an awkward moment. ExpressVPN's chatbot escalates to helpful human agents, while PIA support is mixed. Refunds are your safety net, and all five offer 30 days with conditions: buy directly from the provider where you can, since app-store and reseller purchases often follow different terms.
Which VPN server should you use for Egypt?
The right server depends on which side of the border you are on, and mixing the two up is the most common mistake we see.
Connecting from inside Egypt
From inside Egypt, you want a foreign exit, ideally in a nearby country with strong connectivity, using the provider's obfuscated option. There is no reason to select an Egyptian server, because you are already on an Egyptian network and the point is to leave it. Use the obfuscated option described in the relevant review above. If one location is slow, try another country before blaming the provider. A VPN also cannot restore internet access during a complete network blackout.
Getting an Egyptian IP address from abroad
An Egyptian IP address is useful when you live or travel outside the country and need local banking, a government portal or an Egyptian streaming catalog. The table above shows who offers one and on which plans. We could not confirm that every provider unblocks Egyptian streaming services such as Shahid or WATCH IT. A matching IP location alone is not enough, since streaming services can detect and block VPN exits. Use the money-back window to test the service you actually need.
How to set up a VPN for Egypt
Setup is the step most people leave too late. Download and configure everything before you arrive.
Install and prepare before traveling
Buy directly from the provider's site where possible, since that gives you the cleanest refund terms. Install the app on every device you will use, then sign in and open the settings. Download the alternative protocols or enable the obfuscated option now, because provider websites and app stores can be harder to reach once you are inside Egypt. Note the support page address and keep a backup ready, such as another provider's app or the free Proton plan. Proton's free plan supports only one device but costs nothing to have installed. Test the whole setup on your home network first, then switch your phone to mobile data and test again, because a VPN that works on Wi-Fi can fail on a mobile carrier.
Connect and check your IP address and DNS
Connect to your chosen server, then open an IP lookup page and confirm that the address belongs to the VPN's exit and not to your ISP. Run a DNS leak test next to confirm that lookups also go through the tunnel. If the app says it is connected but pages still fail to load, treat that as a connection problem and not a success, since a connected state alone proves nothing.
What to do if your VPN is not connecting in Egypt
Connection trouble is common enough that it deserves its own plan. Work through the steps in order and change only one thing at a time.
Try the provider's supported obfuscation settings
First, switch to the provider's documented option for restricted networks. On NordVPN, use the Obfuscated category through NordWhisper. The support documentation is mid-migration, and older reviews still describe OpenVPN as the requirement. On Surfshark, change from WireGuard to OpenVPN, which is what connected us on a filtered network. On ExpressVPN, leave the protocol on Automatic. On Proton, enable Stealth. On PIA, try Multi-Hop with obfuscation on desktop, remembering that it can slow things down. Do not assume a connected state means a working connection, since obfuscation is not guaranteed to stay hidden either.
Change server or network and contact support
If the protocol change does not help, try a different server country, then a different network, such as mobile data instead of hotel Wi-Fi. Reach out to support with the app version, your ISP and the protocol you tried. Expect different experiences: ExpressVPN's chatbot escalates to helpful human agents, while PIA's support can be slow or can answer quickly by email or live chat. If nothing works within your refund window, request the refund.
Why use a VPN in Egypt?
People use VPNs in Egypt for three overlapping reasons: reaching blocked sites, making calls and streaming, and protecting data on shared networks.
Internet censorship and blocked websites
Internet censorship is the main driver. Freedom House's Freedom on the Net 2025 report rates Egypt Not Free, with 28/100. The same report documents blocking of the news site Zawia3 in February 2025 and Cairo 24 in November 2024, so the government's blocking of news sites continues. The legal basis is Law No. 175 of 2018, Egypt's anti-cybercrime law, and the Library of Congress summary of that law describes Article 7 as authorizing investigative authorities to block certain websites. For earlier context, website blocking during COP27 in 2022 showed how quickly access to news and human-rights pages can change. That is a dated event, not a statement about today.
WhatsApp calls, VoIP and international streaming
Voice calling has its own history. Freedom House's coverage ending May 31, 2025 says announced plans to lift VoIP restrictions had not taken effect and that several calling services remained inaccessible. We could not verify the current status of WhatsApp voice and video calls across all carriers, so we will not promise that a VPN restores them. What we can say is that a VPN may help if calls are blocked at the network level, while a foreign server with good latency will serve you better than a distant one. Avoid PIA's Multi-Hop for calls, as the vendor itself advises against it for latency-sensitive video calls.
For international streaming, a VPN changes your apparent location. However, streaming services can detect and block VPN exits, so access is not guaranteed. NordVPN reached Netflix, Prime Video and Hulu across the streaming checks we leaned on, ExpressVPN sometimes needed retries, PIA reached BBC iPlayer, and Proton and Surfshark were less consistent.
Public Wi-Fi privacy and the limits of VPN protection
On hotel, cafe and airport Wi-Fi, a VPN encrypts the link between your device and the VPN server, which hides your traffic from other people on the same network. It does not make you anonymous. Your VPN provider can still see your traffic, and accounts, cookies and device fingerprinting still identify you. Treat a VPN as one layer, alongside HTTPS, updates and strong passwords.
Are VPNs legal in Egypt?
We could not verify a current Egyptian regulatory statement that affirms unrestricted consumer VPN use or requires state-approved VPNs. Sources conflict: Proton's Egypt page says VPN use is legal, while a broad TechRadar guide claims state approval is required. Neither replaces a verified determination from Egyptian authorities. What is documented is the website-blocking power in Law No. 175 of 2018 described above.
PIA also lists Egypt among countries that actively restrict VPN access, which is a statement about connectivity and not about law. We are not lawyers, and nothing here is legal advice. If your work or situation carries risk, check current local guidance before you travel, and do not rely on any VPN as protection from legal consequences.
Can you use a free VPN in Egypt?
You can, within tight limits. Proton VPN is the only provider in this guide with a permanent free plan, and none of the other four has a verified free tier.
Free plans versus trials and money-back guarantees
A free plan and a refund are different things. A free plan stays free: Proton's gives you unlimited data and a kill switch on 1 device. A trial is temporary. Android users may see a Google Play trial for NordVPN, and ExpressVPN describes a mobile trial whose length differs between sources, so check the in-app screen. A money-back guarantee lets you pay and then test for 30 days, which is the better route for judging whether a VPN works on your Egyptian connection.
Free Egyptian server availability and limitations
Proton Free does not include Egypt, so it cannot give you an Egyptian IP. You can use it from inside Egypt if it connects to a foreign endpoint, but the locations are randomly assigned and you cannot pick one. That makes it a decent emergency option and a poor tool for streaming or local access. Treat random free VPN apps from app stores with suspicion, since a service that costs nothing still has to pay for servers somehow.
Conclusion: Choosing a VPN for your needs
Match the pick to the job. Choose ExpressVPN if you want the app to choose protocols for you, Surfshark if one account must cover many devices, Proton VPN if a free fallback matters, and Private Internet Access if you enjoy tuning routing and want the lowest promotional price. NordVPN, from the top of this guide, remains the all-rounder for filtered networks and streaming.
Whichever you choose, install it before you travel, test it on more than one network, and use the 30-day refund window to judge it on your own connection. No provider can promise anonymity, universal unblocking or legal safety in Egypt, and the honest approach is to carry a backup protocol and a backup plan.
