If you want a VPN for public Wi-Fi, mobile data or streaming while you are in Côte d'Ivoire, NordVPN is the one we would start with. Surfshark suits households with many devices, ExpressVPN suits people who want simple apps, Proton VPN offers a free tier, and CyberGhost is the budget option. Using a VPN inside the country is not the same as getting an Ivorian IP address, which matters if you want local content from abroad. We cover that difference below.
Best VPNs for Côte d’Ivoire at a glance
All five services have apps for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and each advertises a money-back guarantee. The differences are device limits, pricing, refund length and whether you can pick an Ivorian IP location. Prices are introductory offers that change by region and renew at a higher rate, so check the final order summary before you pay.

How we selected VPNs for Côte d’Ivoire
We started with services that offer apps for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS and publish a clear refund policy and a pricing page we could read. We then compared device limits, protocols, kill-switch and obfuscation options, streaming behavior, setup friction and the way each service labels its locations.
The order of this list is editorial and based on that research. We have not run speed tests from Orange, MTN or Moov networks in Côte d'Ivoire, so we make no claim about the fastest local route. Where our hands-on notes appear, they describe how the apps behaved in use, not measurements from the country.
1. NordVPN
NordVPN is the best all-round choice for most people in Côte d'Ivoire. It offers NordLynx, OpenVPN and NordWhisper protocols, plus Double VPN, obfuscated servers and dedicated-IP options. In our testing everyday connections were fast and the apps were easy to use.
Most major streaming libraries opened for us, though access was not universal across every service or region. On restrictive Wi-Fi networks, such as a hotel or café that blocks VPN traffic, we switched from NordLynx to OpenVPN and the connection came back. That one change is worth remembering before you contact support.
NordVPN's pricing depends on region, and the offers we found varied. The price you see in Abidjan may therefore differ from US review offers. Its 30-day money-back guarantee is advertised on all plans. Evidence is also mixed on an Ivorian server: the current official country list omits Côte d'Ivoire, while one server-expansion report says Ivory Coast was added. We would not buy NordVPN for an Ivorian IP until you have confirmed it in the app.
Best for: Travelers and residents who want one dependable app on every device. Skip if: An Ivorian IP address is the main reason you are buying.
2. Surfshark
Where NordVPN caps you at 10 devices, Surfshark does not, which makes it the pick when the whole household needs coverage. It allows unlimited simultaneous devices, and its bundle includes ad blocking, Bypasser split tunneling, rotating IP and Dynamic MultiHop. Antivirus and breach alerts depend on the plan you choose. Apps run on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.
We used it on a laptop for ordinary browsing. Searching for a country was quick, and the disconnect button stayed visible whenever we wanted to disconnect. The app ran reliably without noticeable battery drain or device slowdown. That matters on a laptop you use away from a socket. We could stream from difficult platforms and several Netflix regions.
Pay close attention to the price. The headline $2.49 per month equivalent is an introductory rate paid upfront for 27 months, before VAT, and renewal moves to the standard rate. A 30-day refund covers eligible first purchases, including direct website purchases. Its country selector lists neighbors such as Ghana but no Côte d'Ivoire entry.
Best for: Families or small offices with many phones and laptops. Skip if: You prefer predictable renewal costs.
3. ExpressVPN
Where Surfshark offers a bundle of extras, ExpressVPN is the easiest app to hand to someone who does not want to configure anything. It runs Lightway, recommends server locations and lets you save desktop favorites. Connection protection blocks traffic if the tunnel drops. Device limits depend on the tier: Basic allows 10, Advanced 12 and Pro 14.
The large connect control and simple location picker made the basic app easy to navigate, and favorites made repeat connections quicker. Two quirks caught us out, though. After we installed the app on a laptop, the first connection only worked once we restarted the laptop. Later, a failed connection attempt left our ordinary internet traffic blocked until we dealt with the connection protection setting.
Current apps need Android 7 or above and iOS 15 or above, so older handsets may fall outside support. Basic costs $2.99 per month equivalent on a 28-month deal, then $99.95 per year, and new users get a 30-day money-back guarantee. The official server list shows South Africa and a virtual Nigeria location, but no Côte d'Ivoire.
Best for: People who want a simple app and do not mind paying more. Skip if: You need the cheapest renewal or an Ivorian location.
4. Proton VPN
Where ExpressVPN charges more for simplicity, Proton VPN stands out as the only service here with a verified Ivorian IP location. It is also the only one offering a free plan with unlimited data and no ads. The Plus plan adds country selection, streaming support, NetShield blocking, Secure Core routing, Tor over VPN and P2P. It protects 10 devices, while the Free plan allows 1 device at a time. Its apps are open source and include a kill switch and the Stealth protocol.
That Ivorian location comes with a catch, which we explain in the section on Ivorian IP addresses below. Free users also cannot choose a location, because free servers are assigned for you.
The interface is clean, with inline explanations and saved profiles that make advanced settings approachable. When streaming misbehaved with NetShield switched on, we built two saved profiles: one for browsing with NetShield and one for streaming without it. That solved the problem. We also compared protocols and found WireGuard performed strongly, while OpenVPN could be much slower. Some Australian services needed retries before playback worked, but Netflix opened across the US, UK, Canadian, Australian and Japanese regions we tried.
Plus shows $3.49 per month equivalent, $83.76 upfront for 24 months, then $83.88 every 12 months. The 30-day guarantee does not cover cash and bank-transfer purchases.
Best for: Anyone who wants an Ivorian IP location or a free starting point. Skip if: You want the lowest introductory price.
5. CyberGhost
Where Proton VPN wins on location, CyberGhost is the budget option, with a $2.19 per month equivalent and a $56.94 initial bill, then $56.94 annually. The checkout page mixes 26-month, two-year and two-years-plus-three-month labels, so check that the final order summary matches your intended purchase before paying. Monthly is $12.99 and six months is $41.94. Refunds run 45 days on six-month and longer plans but only 14 days on monthly.
It allows 7 simultaneous connections. Servers are labeled by activity such as streaming, gaming and P2P, and the service includes an automatic kill switch, unlimited bandwidth and live chat. The apps for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS are straightforward to install, though layouts feel less modern than some rivals, and Linux needs manual configuration.
CyberGhost has weaker spots. On Windows, we set up website exclusions and found that they override the selected protocol by forcing OpenVPN, undoing our earlier choice. On mobile, a connection attempt stalled on us, and disconnecting could stall too. Netflix can load promptly and play smoothly, yet some other streaming services can still fail to open. No Côte d'Ivoire entry appeared in its server directory.
Best for: Budget-minded users on a long plan. Skip if: You rely on mobile and want the smoothest connect and disconnect.
Why use a VPN in Côte d’Ivoire?
A VPN encrypts your traffic and hides your real IP address from the sites you visit and from the network you connect through. That helps most when you are on a network you do not control. It does not make you anonymous, because cookies, account logins and other tracking methods still apply.
Public Wi-Fi privacy and the limits of VPN protection
Hotels, cafés and airports are typical public Wi-Fi settings. A VPN stops the other people on that network from reading your traffic. A kill switch blocks unprotected traffic if the tunnel drops. Even so, a VPN does not stop every attack. It will not help if you type a password into a fake login page or install a malicious app, and it is not a substitute for fraud protection on a mobile-money account.
On Android, open the system VPN settings and turn on always-on VPN, then block connections outside the VPN, so the phone sends nothing unprotected if the tunnel fails.
Streaming from Côte d’Ivoire and accessing Ivorian content abroad
Streaming libraries depend on the country your VPN location appears to be in. Inside Côte d'Ivoire, a VPN lets you pick another country to reach its catalog, but results vary by service and no provider guarantees every platform. Going the other way, from abroad, you need an Ivorian IP location, covered in the next section. An Ivorian IP is not proof that a local broadcaster or banking app will accept you, and we have not tested those services.
Can you get an Ivorian IP address with a VPN?
Sometimes, and it is rarer than the marketing suggests. Of the five services, only Proton VPN lists an Ivorian location. NordVPN's evidence is mixed, and Surfshark, ExpressVPN and CyberGhost did not list Côte d'Ivoire in their official directories. Several do list nearby countries such as South Africa, Ghana and Senegal, which are not a substitute.
Local IP addresses, virtual locations and nearby servers
A virtual location gives you an IP address that appears to be in a country while the server sits elsewhere. Proton's Ivorian location is hosted in London. A server's physical proximity is a separate matter: having a country's IP address does not mean the hardware is nearby. For regional streaming, choose the country of the content, not the closest server.
If speed matters more than appearing Ivorian, a nearby real server will usually feel better than a distant virtual one. ExpressVPN's Smart Location picks a server by speed, latency and distance, which is a sensible default.
How to set up a VPN in Côte d’Ivoire
Setup takes about as long as installing any other app. Sign up on the provider's own site, because store and reseller routes can change refund and account terms.
Install the official app and enable connection protection
Download the app from the provider's website or your phone's official store, sign in and allow the VPN configuration when your phone asks. Then switch on the kill switch or connection protection in settings. With ExpressVPN, a restart may be needed after install. If you are choosing a phone-specific service, our guide to the best VPN for Android covers that case.
Choose a server and check your connection
Tap Connect and the app picks a location automatically. With a paid account, you can choose a specific country from the list if you want. Recent connections are saved. Then open a site that shows your IP address and confirm it matches the location you chose.
What to try if your VPN is slow or will not connect
Work through these in order:
- Switch protocol. NordVPN on OpenVPN worked for us on restrictive Wi-Fi, and Proton's WireGuard was far quicker than OpenVPN.
- Pick a different server in the same country, or a nearby country.
- Turn off NetShield or similar filters if streaming fails, as with Proton VPN.
- Check your phone's mobile data allowance, since VPN traffic still uses it.
- Update the app. Older phones may fall below the supported Android or iOS version.
Can you use a free VPN in Côte d’Ivoire?
Yes, but choose carefully. Proton VPN's Free plan, described above, is the only free option we would suggest, and it keeps no logs. Free tools from unknown developers can sell data or inject ads, so stay with a provider you can name. Our guide to the best free VPN compares the field if you want more choice.
