If you need a VPN in Gambia, the real question is whether you want protection on the network you are using or a Gambian IP address. Those are different jobs. NordVPN is our pick because it covers both: strong everyday privacy and a listed Gambian server location. Its main tradeoffs are a steep renewal price and a cramped mobile layout. Surfshark, ExpressVPN and Proton VPN each beat it on one point, such as price, setup or a free tier, so the table below shows where each one fits.

Our four VPN picks for Gambia
NordVPN
NordVPN is the one we would install first. Its official server table lists Gambia with one city, plus neighbouring Senegal, so it is the only provider here that offers a Gambian exit location. That listing shows coverage, not where the hardware physically sits, and we would not promise that every bank or streaming site accepts it.
On a Windows laptop, the app connected promptly and did not strain the machine in ordinary use. It also handled most streaming services we tried without CAPTCHAs, buffering or dropouts, although US YouTube and Australian Prime Video stayed blocked. Mobile is the weak spot. The phone interface feels cramped, even though the controls are stable and intuitive. The macOS app lacks the split-tunneling and full-system kill-switch options you get elsewhere.
Each account covers 10 devices, and the 30-day refund window starts at your first purchase. Watch out for the renewal cost. The advertised Basic deal works out to $3.49 a month, but the plan renews at $139.08 a year.
Best for: Anyone who wants a Gambian IP address or one app for everything. Skip if: Renewal price matters more than server coverage.
Surfshark
Where NordVPN gets pricey at renewal, Surfshark is the best value for a busy household. It allows unlimited simultaneous connections, so one subscription lets everyone in the family connect their phones, laptops and TVs. The Starter offer is the cheapest of the four at $2.49 a month on the 27-month deal, and the 30-day refund window gives you time to test it.
In our testing the split-tunneling controls were straightforward, including website exclusions on iOS. When WireGuard could not connect on restrictive Wi-Fi, switching to OpenVPN got us online. The kill switch blocked exposure reliably in failure tests. Netflix libraries opened without us changing servers or settings.
There are two limits. The rotating IP feature can log you out of sites that tie a session to one address. The renewal amount was not published clearly when we checked, so read the checkout page before you commit.
Best for: Families and anyone with more than ten devices. Skip if: You need a Gambian exit IP.
ExpressVPN
Where Surfshark leans on value, ExpressVPN is the easiest of the four to set up. Login uses an activation code, and streaming devices can be paired with a QR code, which helps if you are configuring a TV or tablet on a slow connection. As part of its privacy design, its servers run from RAM, so data clears on reboot. The company states that it keeps no browsing or connection logs.
The desktop layout is simple, though its large map is not interactive and wastes space. Speeds depend on the platform, and the fastest results we saw were on Windows. On iPhone, the app lacks split tunneling and auto-connect, so its controls differ from those in the desktop app. ExpressVPN connected to BBC iPlayer, ITV, Channel 4, 9Now and 10Play without repeated attempts.
Basic allows 10 devices, with 12 on Advanced and 14 on Pro. The Basic deal is $2.99 a month on a 28-month term and renews at $99.95 a year, which is cheaper than NordVPN's renewal. Direct buyers get a 30-day refund, while purchases through Apple or Google follow the store's rules instead.
Best for: People who want the least setup friction. Skip if: You rely on iPhone split tunneling.
Proton VPN
Unlike the three paid-only options, Proton VPN is the pick if you want to start free. The free plan has no data cap, no ads and no activity logs, but it supports one device at a time and assigns your server automatically. That makes it awkward to reach a specific country, and repeated server changes involve waiting. Paid Plus adds streaming, P2P and NetShield and supports 10 devices. It costs $3.49 a month on the 24-month offer ($83.76 upfront), then renews at $83.88 every 12 months.
The apps are open source, and its no-logs policy has been assessed by Securitum. Secure Core routes traffic through hardened servers in Switzerland, Iceland or Sweden before it exits the VPN. The kill switch held up under interruption tests. The tradeoff is complexity: the many advanced controls can confuse beginners. NetShield can also interfere with ad-funded streaming such as Channel 4, and changing exit city sometimes restores access.
Best for: Privacy-focused users who want a free starting point. Skip if: You want a Gambian IP or a no-fuss interface.
Why use a VPN in Gambia?
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server, which keeps cafe, hotel and shared networks from reading your data. That is the most practical reason to use one here. US State Department guidance for The Gambia advises travelers to update device software, use reputable VPN or VoIP applications and avoid public Wi-Fi.
Access is the second reason. Authorities shut down the internet, international calls and SMS around the December 2016 election. That shutdown is a historical event, not a current restriction. A VPN cannot restore service if the network itself is cut, so install the app and download your server list before you travel.
Public Wi-Fi, streaming and the limits of VPN protection
A VPN hides your traffic from the local network and your internet provider, but not from the sites you log into. It does not make you anonymous, and it does not stop phishing. Streaming is hit and miss everywhere. NordVPN and Proton each failed on some libraries while working on others, so treat any streaming promise with caution.
Using a VPN inside Gambia and getting a Gambian IP address are different things. Most providers here give you privacy on a local connection but no server in the country. Only NordVPN lists a Gambian location among these four.
How to choose a VPN for Gambia
Start with what you need the VPN to do. If it is private browsing on shared Wi-Fi, any of the four will work. If you need a local IP for a banking or government site, check the provider's server list before you pay.
Server locations, speed and reliable mobile connections
We found no reproducible speed or latency measurements on Gambian networks, so we will not rank providers by local performance. Choose for reliability instead. A kill switch, a protocol fallback such as OpenVPN, and apps that reconnect cleanly matter more on an unstable mobile network than peak speed.
Privacy, device support and total subscription cost
Look for an independently assessed no-logs policy, which NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton all publish. ExpressVPN relies on RAM-only servers. Then count devices and compare the renewal price, not the headline price. A long intro term can look cheap until the renewal arrives.
How to set up a VPN in Gambia
- Subscribe and install the app on every device before you travel, since app stores and vendor sites can be slow to load abroad.
- Sign in, then open Settings and turn on the kill switch and auto-connect where the app offers them.
- Connect to the nearest server unless you need a specific country.
- Check that the connection holds when you switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
Download the apps and log in once on a trusted network before you go. If a connection fails later, the advice in NordVPN's own Windows troubleshooting guide applies to every app: try a different country and set the protocol to Auto.
Which VPN should you choose?
If you are unsure, start with the cheapest route. Proton Free costs nothing, and every paid plan here carries a 30-day refund, so you can test one on your own network and cancel if it disappoints.
