What is Amazon Fresh? A Review and Overview

Amazon Fresh is Amazon’s grocery store for fresh produce and food, which ships right to your door. The service costs $299 per year ($14.99 per month + the $10.99 per month for Amazon Prime) after you use your 30 day free trial, and includes Amazon Prime, with free Amazon shipping, two free eBooks per month, and free Amazon video streaming. If you’re already an Amazon Prime member, you’ll be spending about $4 extra per week for the service.

What is Amazon Fresh

Amazon Fresh offers a selection of fresh vegetables and fruits, meat, and even vegan and vegetarian options. They have a surprisingly large selection in some areas (like tomatoes), and a lackluster collection in others (like dried beans), as well as a monthly collection of coupons and deals you can use to save money, a selection of local delis and restaurants that will give food to Amazon Fresh for delivery, a drug store, and even prepared foods. These aren’t available in every location, but most areas have quite a few options

What Can You Buy at Amazon Fresh

Amazon Fresh offers most of the foods that you would use on a regular basis in your kitchen, including pasta, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, beer and wine, frozen foods, dairy, eggs, juices, meat, poultry, and seafood, condiments, sauces, canned foods, and much more. In fact, in many areas, they have a larger selection than most grocery stores, which is a huge step forward from their previous small selection.

What About Quality

There have been issues with some orders shipped out by Amazon Fresh. The most important of these is that you won’t be able to choose vegetables based on preference. For example, you can choose whether you want ripe or unripe avocados, but you can’t choose exactly how soft the avocado should be. Some complaints suggest that not all orders are edible, but we haven’t seen any issues with it in our own orders. In fact, all of the food was quite fresh, and very good.

In one instance, we were shipped the wrong item, and Amazon surprised us by offering a $10 coupon as a “We’re sorry” for a $4.80 item (Ground beef). We did not have to return the wrong item.

Amazon Fresh Cost & Value

The main concern for anyone purchasing from Amazon Fresh is cost and value. One important consideration is that they aren’t trying to undercut local stores, but instead, are offering prices that are comparable with local options. This means that prices vary depending on which city you are in, and will be mostly comparable or competitive with what you can get in Safeway, HEB, or whatever other local store you use. We compared prices from three different locations, and in each case, the same shopping cart was about $3 more from Amazon than the brick and mortar store.

Getting Free Shipping from Amazon Fresh

Amazon Fresh is a best value if you can get free shipping. While you can get free shipping in many areas on any order over $50. This is the best way to make Amazon Prime Fresh valuable, because you’re already paying roughly $25 a month for the privilege of home delivery, so paying for shipping over that rate sucks. At $50 orders, you can place one or more orders per week depending on how many people you’re feeding, and get the free shipping.

Who Is Amazon Fresh For?

Amazon Fresh obviously Isn’t for everyone. If you prefer to pick out your own foods, know where to shop locally to get the best prices or the best produce, or are picky about the exact condition of your food, then you probably don’t want this service. If you live right next to a grocery store, you’re also still better off shopping the normal way.

However, if you’re always busy, work late, or work at odd hours, don’t have the time to go to the grocery store, have to drive for a long time to get there, or even hate it, Amazon Prime Fresh is a great idea. For $25 a month, you can cut costs of gas (which can be considerable over the year) and save yourself a lot of time. If you order early in the morning, you can also get dinner time deliveries, or just order during the day to get early morning deliveries. Since they also have a bakery, this is a great way to get fresh bread and meat without having to worry about spending time to go get it. Amazon Fresh’s biggest value is time, because you can put together everything you need in 10-15 minutes instead of the 40-80 minutes usually required for a typical grocery store run.
