Top Five Free Tax Filing Programs

Filing your taxes is never fun but as of January 2016, there are several new technologies that will make filing just a bit less of a hassle. There are now 10 great options that will allow you to file your taxes for free, with software guidance, rather than having to fill out the paperwork yourself. While these free tax filing software programs are primarily only available to persons who make $63,000 or less per year (if you make more than that you should really be getting professional assistance), they are a great way to save time and money for everyone else.

These are the top 5 free tax filing software programs available in 2017.

TurboTax All Free SM

Top Free tax filing programs, free tax filing software, free tax filing, file taxes free

Our Rating: 9 out of 10

TurboTax Absolute Zero is one of the most well known tax programs out there, and coincidentally it’s also our favorite free tax filing program. Unfortunately, TurboTax All Free SM is only available if your gross adjusted income is $33,000 or less and you are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, but if you qualify, it is the best option out there. Interestingly, TurboTax was also the first tax filing program to offer a free solution, so if you can use it, we highly recommend it.

Why It’s Great:

  • Fast
  • Very Professional
  • Simple
  • Easy to Use
  • Imports Previous Year’s Tax Returns
  • Files both State and Federal Returns

EzTax Return

Top Free tax filing programs, free tax filing software, free tax filing, file taxes free

Our Rating: 6 out of 10

With free Federal filing you earn $64,000 or less, ezTaxReturn offers one of the highest barriers for free tax filing. However, free tax filing s only available for some states (AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, GA, IL, LA, MA, MD, MI, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NY, OH, PA, VA, and WI). You will also have to pay $20 extra to file your state returns at the same time. However, ezTaxReturn does hold up to their name with an easy to use program and lots of help with filing.

Why It’s Great:

  • Fast
  • Professional
  • Easy to use
  • Great for first time taxpayers

H&R Block More Zero

Top Free tax filing programs, free tax filing software, free tax filing, file taxes free

Our Rating: 8 out of 10

If you earn less than $64,000 per month and want to file online, you can do so with H&R Block More Zero. This free file option is one of the best for tax payers with Schedule A 1040 deductions, because H&R Block does not charge for them. The online software is relatively fast and easy to use, but will sometimes have glitches.

Why It’s Great:

  • Fast
  • Supports State and Federal Returns
  • Features a maximum refund guarantee
  • Free for Schedule A 1040s

1040 Free File Edition

Top Free tax filing programs, free tax filing software, free tax filing, file taxes free

Our Rating: 7 out of 10

If you earn $58,000 or less, are younger than 52, and are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, you can use the 1040 Free File edition. The software is very easy to use, offers PDF copies of your tax returns before you file, and makes it easy to file. However, there are some glitches and finding your way around the site might be difficult at first. Filing your state taxes costs $14.95.

Why It’s Great:

  • Very easy
  • PDF files

TaxAct Free File

Top Free tax filing programs, free tax filing software, free tax filing, file taxes free

Our Rating: 7 out of 10

If you earn less than $52,000 per year, are under 56, and qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, you can qualify for TaxAct Free File. This free tax filing software makes it easy to file online with a very simple infrastructure and step by step guidance. However, with poor customer service and a $15 surcharge for importing your previous year’s taxes, it’s not perfect. TaxAct Free File is not suitable if you have 1040 Schedule A deductions, own a home, or invest.

Why It’s Great:

  • Free state and Federal tax filing
  • Great and low-cost upgrade options
  • Easy step by step guidance

Filing your taxes shouldn’t mean paying for the service, and with these free tax filing programs, you can file free of charge online. Many of them will also help you e-file, so that you can directly submit your returns to the IRS.
