Review of SpamTitan – Affordable Spam Blocking for Businesses
Earlier this year I was asked to review WebTitan, a virtual web filtering application for business. Needless to say I loved the program, although I am happy my employers don’t use it on me, so I was more than happy when I was asked to review the companies main service, SpamTitan, a spam filter for web base email.
SpamTitan can be set up using a virtual server, on premises, or on demand. I personally reviewed the virtual options and needless to say it’s ridiculously easy to set up. All you have to do is send them your email server IP (if you use hosting then you can find this on the backend of your host) and change your MX records to point to SpamTitan’s own server. If you know where everything is at then the whole process only takes a few minutes, and if not, the people at SpamTitan offer excellent support and will walk you through the whole process via a video or on the phone.
SpamTitan is essentially an email spam blocker meaning that it’s only real function is to block spam emails going to your domain email. However, SpamTitan offers a couple of different features based on specific blocking including ways to customize what is and what is not considered as spam.
- Blacklist Emails
- Blacklist Domains
- Whitelist Domains
- Full Reporting
- Outgoing Disclaimer
Essentially you can specifically block an email address or domain, set your spam filtering to enable one or more emails or websites, and view every email that passes through quarantine.
Ease of Use
One of the first things I noticed about SpamTitan is that it’s very easy to use. Setup only takes a few minutes to put everything in place and then once your MX records have updated, you’re all good to go. The interface is incredibly easy to use and outlines everything you need to know and even if you aren’t very good with tech, you should have no problem working with it. Basically everything is very self explanatory and you should only take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with it. I actually declined the offered walkthrough in order to get a better idea of how easy to use the software is from the get-go and I had no issues whatsoever. However, if you want, they do offer a free live video tutorial to show you where everything is and how to change it.
The GUI is extremely simple and actually very lightweight and really just easy to use.
At the end of the day, the most important factor of any spam blocker is it’s effectiveness. I actually found SpamTitan to be really great as I didn’t receive a single spam message while testing it. In fact, I actually signed my email up to receive spam from a number of sites and not one of them showed up in my inbox. While most of us don’t sign up for spam, it’s great to know that the filters work well. SpamTitan uses ClamAV and Kapersky Labs for scanning which seems to be a highly succesful combination.
There are actually very few cons that I noticed about SpamTitan. The price is pretty reasonable for the product although a little expensive for very small businesses, it’s cheaper than most competitors. It also doesn’t seem to have too much in the way of individual email filtering for a domain, but that shouldn’t be a problem for most businesses.
SpamTitan has a lot of pros and I would actually be more than happy to recommend it. The major pros include that it is incredibly easy to setup, easy to use, offers great spam blocking, doesn’t block existing customers, and offers great customer support. While it doesn’t guarantee that it’s 100% accurate, it was for me, which is a huge pro. You can also set it up with multiple emails and multiple websites although you have to log in for each specific domain. I did not test it with multiple emails as I used my own personal domain brandycross.com and as an individual I have no need for multiple email accounts on my domain, but with all points considered it should be just fine. I really like that it is set up so that you can add an administrator to the entire account or to just one domain so that if you’re working wit a number of different clients and offer spam blocking, you can let each site owner log into their own domain to see the spam filtering.
All in all, SpamTitan is a great investment for anyone wanting to ensure the security of ingoing and outgoing mail. With prices starting at $450 per year for single appliance cloud based spam blocking, or $1080 per three years (a 20% discount) it’s definitely an affordable option for most small to medium businesses. SpamTitan also has enterprise solutions, so it’s pretty much a scalable product rather than a one size fits all. If you’re not sure, you can always try the 30 day free trial to see if you like it before committing it to your budget.
