Moving Wallpaper Apps for iPhone

Moving Wallpaper Apps for iPhone

IOS 10 introduced Live photos, and unknown to many, it came with the option to set live or moving wallpapers on your iPhone. This feature simply allows you to integrate any Live photo, which is a short video like a GIF, into your iPhone background, so that you can see movement on your lock screen. While you could take your own Live photos, there are a few apps that allow you to choose from HD and high quality live photos to set moving wallpapers on your iPhone.

How to Activate a Live Wallpaper

  1. Activate 3D Touch in Device Settings (Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > 3D Touch > ON)
  2. Press and hold your lock screen, gently increasing the pressure until the background begins to move. It won’t move on its own, because this takes up to much of the iPhone’s system resources. Live backgrounds also only work on the lock screen. Importantly, they also only work on iPhone 6 and later devices.

Setting Your Own Live Wallpaper – To take a live photo, just tap the Live icon on your camera to ensure that it is on, take the photo, and then go into your Photos app. You can set it as a moving wallpaper just like you would with any other photo by tapping ‘share’ and then hitting “set as wallpaper’. You do have to set it as your lock screen wallpaper to see movement.

Live Wallpapers for Me – Live Wallpapers for Me is a free app but you can also choose to purchase it to remove ads. This app allows you to scroll through your options and will show you ads every few wallpapers you view. Like with other wallpaper apps, the live wallpaper must be downloaded and then set from your photos app. However, you also have to ensure that you have ‘Live’ selected, but it will select automatically.

Live Wallpapers & Themes Free – This app comes up fairly early on if you search for live wallpapers, but it doesn’t seem to have any functions. While the app has one photo, that’s all it will let you see. You should likely skip it.

Live Wallpapers – This app integrates standard and live wallpapers, and you can choose which you want to see from the category menu. The animated wallpapers include a selection of various themes, but you cannot sort through them to see specific categories. You will have to view ads in between some swipes. Live Wallpapers by Themify offers over 500 free live wallpapers, plus additional live wallpaper packs for $2.99 per pack.

Live Wallpapers for iPhone 6s, 6s Plus – Live Wallpapers for iPhone 6s, 6s Plus is a free app that allows you to sort through live wallpaper options based on category. While it is ad heavy and you will have to view ads every time you click through to a new category, it is one of the best organized free live wallpaper apps. However, many of the live backgrounds are only available with additional in-app purchases, where you can buy a pack of 400+ live wallpapers for $2.

Custom Live Photo Themes Free – This app offers a variety of crystal and light based art moving wallpapers, is completely free, and allows you to quickly set photos. However, there are not a great deal of choices and options in the app.

Pro Tip: Make Your Own – If you have a gif or video laying around that you would like to use as your life wallpaper, just use this app. It’s easy, free, and turns most types of moving recorded imagery into Live photos that you can use as a wallpaper.

What’s the catch? Your live wallpapers will only react when you press and hold on the lock screen and won’t work on your primary screen, you’ll also probably get tired of most of them pretty quickly. That aside, it’s still pretty cool to have a moving wallpaper on your iPhone.
