Is a Wix Free Website Worth It?

If you want a free website, is one of the best options on the web. While other sites like WordPress also offer free websites, the Wix editor is one of the easiest tools to get started with if you don’t know design or PHP. While WordPress requires a lot of fiddling with themes to get the look you want, Wix is simply drag and drop. With unique features, you can also edit every single element on the page, making Wix one of the most customizable free websites out there. And like all of their competitors, Wix enables you to easily upgrade to hosting and an own-domain with a few clicks of a button.

How to Set Up a Free Wix Website

Getting Used to the Wix Editor

The Wix Editor can be a little confusing at first, purely because everything is editable. However, Wix uses a very simple method that gives you maximum control over everything. Every object is editable, you can change all colors, fonts, and text, and every item can be moved somewhere else.

  1. Click on an object. Move it to see what happens
  2. Left click. You can change the design, change the background, etc.
  3. Repeat this with literally any item.

Adding Elements

Wix is great because it allows you to easily add and remove any page elements. If you click the + button on the left hand menu you can see 17 different element options, each of which have numerous sub-options. You can add any of this content to your site for free. You can also edit each element to customize the background, the images, the font, the text, the size, the position, and more.


Wix allows you to easily add free apps to your free site with the click of a button. These add functionality ranging from a blog to social feeds to newsletters and much more. Many of them are completely free and all you have to do to add them is click on the app. Some do have premium options, but you will be asked if you want the premium option.

Mobile Editor

Wix offers a mobile editor, which is great if you’re one of the growing number of people who don’t own a laptop or desktop. You can easily work with Wix right from your tablet or even your phone if you’re desperate. It’s also a little easier to work with on a touch screen, because you can pinch to zoom and get object sizes exactly right.

For example, you can get hosting, a domain, and free design and building tools for just $8.50 per month, or $102, which is highly competitive when compared to other plans. If you’re comparing Wix with Squarespace, their basic plan starts at $11. So, has a lot to offer if you’re looking for an affordable place to build a free website and then upgrade it later as your venture grows and you can invest more in it.

Wix’s app marketplace also allows you to add a range of very customizable features which makes designing a page or a store very easy no matter what your skill level.

If you know code or want a technical solution for your website, a Wix free site is probably not for you. However, if you’re like most and want something that’s easy, fast to set up, and that doesn’t require any technical knowledge, Wix is a great solution. If you can find your way around Paint, you can probably make Wix work for you. And, if you can’t, there are still plety of great themes that you can use to set up your site.
