Parrot AR Drone 2.0

The Parrot AR Drone 2.0 puts flight controls on your smartphone
Drones are becoming all the rage. Many different models are popping up for sale all over the place. The military is using them (of course, in a slightly different capacity than you or I). Even large retailers like Amazon are testing the waters with them, or considering doing so. Drones are amazing pieces of technology, and lots of fun, as well.

Why Camera Drones are Fun

Imagine being able to soar high above the rooftops, look around you, have no care in the world. Of course we’re human, so that’s impossible, for the most part. But with a camera drone, you can get close. Drones can take off and land from just about anywhere. They don’t need long runways and lots of open space to operate (although it helps) like radio control planes do. And with the added camera, you can have lots of fun checking out the neighborhood. What about checking your roof for damage after yesterday’s hail storm? Or spying on that bird nest in your tree? All of this is possible with a camera drone. In fact, the possibilities for fun are almost endless.

About the Parrot AR 2.0

The Parrot AR Drone 2.0 is simply amazing. It offers extreme precision control with its 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor and 1GB DDR2 RAM. It also runs on LInux 2.6.32, which is awesomely geeky! It’s 4 brushless motors and micro ball bearings offers smooth flight with very little noise (great for spying on the aforementioned birds), and the motor? Well, it’s reprogrammable. How cool is that?

The Parrot AR 2.0 is made from carbon fiber tubes and fiber charged nylon parts, which makes it quite durable. The inertial center is isolated by foam, and the sensors are coated with liquid repellent to make it semi-weatherproof.

Special Features of the Parrot AR Drone 2.0

One of the best features of the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 is the fact that it can be controlled via a mobile device. Apps for both Android and iOS let you fly the drone, with or without the device’s accelerometer, and switch camera angles all from within the app itself. It also allows you to to record pictures, video and navigation data and upload them instantly (assuming you have WiFi or a data connection).

The Parrot AR Drone 2.0 also allows for “Director Mode”, which lets you program a series of automatic movements so you can focus on shooting great video. You can pan, travel, and crane, as well as adjust the speed and movement in real time so that you can get your video sequence just right. What about white balance, exposure and luminosity settings? Yep, it includes that too. And when you’re done, you can upload your masterpiece to YouTube and the AR.Drone Academy.

Safety and Privacy Considerations

While you’re out having fun with the Parrot AR 2.0 camera drone, it’s important to take privacy and safety into consideration. You should never fly the drone where it can interfere with other people, vehicles or any type of aircraft. And never invade someone’s privacy or take photos and videos of someone without their permission. Doing so could theoretically land you in a lot of trouble.

Do you have a Parrot AR 2.0, or other type of drone? What do you do with it? Let us know.
