Are Refurbished Laptops Good?
If you’re looking for a discount or budget computer but don’t necessarily want the quality that you get for budget prices, then you’ve likely been told to look into refurbished options. Unfortunately the majority of people aren’t exactly sure what refurbished laptops are. Most know that refurbished laptops are used computers, but very little else. Because buying used computers is considered risky, you might be wondering if refurbs are actually any good. Keep reading to find out.
What is Refurbished?
Refurbished is any used item that is used but has been repaired, fixed, or cleaned up to a state as near that of new condition as possible. Many refurbished items are purchased broken, or gotten from trade-ins, when their original owners wanted a new laptop, and then fixed up, restored to factory condition, repackaged, and sold. Because the entire process involves renovating the laptop to a like new condition, it is safer to purchase a refurbished laptop than it is to purchase a secondhand one. Many refurbished laptops come with a warranty, and most are extensively tested before they are put up for sale. This benefits you as a buyer because you have less to worry about.
Different Types of Refurbished
One important thing to keep in mind is that there are three main types of refurbished. Each option comes with a different level of quality guarantee, and a different price-tag.
Factory Refurbished means that the laptop has been repaired and refurbished by the original manufacturer. This is the best way to go for quality assurance. Most manufacturers, like Apple, offer a one year warranty on all refurbished products, so that you get the same protection as you would from a new item. Unfortunately, pricing is usually only 20-30% lower than a brand new laptop, meaning that you don’t save a lot of money unless it’s a very old model. This is the safest way to go because it offers the most quality guarantee.
There are multiple small companies that purchase and refurbish laptops and computers for sale. These companies usually specialize in used electronics, sometimes offer a warranty, and do their own testing. Some of them are certified by the original manufacturer as refurbishing to manufacturer approved standards. This type of refurb is usually the best middle choice for safety, quality, and budget, as prices are usually 25-45% of the original new cost.
Seller refurbished means that the owner has taken steps to refurbish the laptop. This often comes with no quality guarantee, and no real guarantee that the person has done anything other than clean the exterior and reset it to factory default. However, this is the cheapest option because there is no service charge from a company. Make sure that you carefully read any specifications on a seller refurbished product, and talk to the owner before you make the purchase.
Buying Refurbished Items
Most of the time, refurbished items are a great in-between for anyone who wants the safety and quality assurance of a new computer, but the low prices of a used one. Prices are also in between used and new. For most buyers, refurbished laptops make a good business decision because they do offer the most assurance for the money.
