This is shaping up to be a great year for gamers. Not only are game developers releasing a number of much-anticipated titles for the current console market, we are also expecting new console announcements from both Sony and Microsoft. This means that gamers have a lot to look forward to for games in 2013. Below, I’ve put together a list of the games coming out in 2013 that I am most excited to see. Unfortunately, several will not be available until the next-gen consoles come out during the holiday season.

DmC: Devil May Cry

Our first game in 2013 that we have to look forward to will be the next title in Capcom’s hit series. It features an alternate reality, and takes place in the demon populated town of Limbo City. The main character Dante will have a variety of weapons with which to hack and slash his way through the demonic minions including a sword named Rebellion and twin pistols dubbed Ebony and Ivory. Players will also have the opportunity to try out the game’s new Angel and Devil modes. In Angel mode, Rebellion becomes Osiris, much faster scythe that will allow Dante to quickly tear through his enemies. This attack should be excellent when facing groups of demons. In Devil mode, Dante’s sword becomes Arbiter which is slower, but much more powerful. This mode should be excellent when facing stronger, boss type enemies.

DmC: Devil May Cry will be released for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC on January 15.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a spin-off of Kojima Productions’ Metal Gear series occurs for a years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4, and features Raiden as he fights against Desperado Enterprises, a private military company that has turned terrorist activities. Unlike previous Metal Gear games, Metal Gear Rising will be more action than stealth oriented. This is a well suited change to Raiden’s character, who uses a powerful katana as his main weapon. This new game in 2013 will feature a specialized cutting system that will allow players unique control over Raiden’s actions with the blade.

The storyline featured in Metal Gear Rising is well-suited to Raiden’s unique personality. Still conflicted over his life as a child soldier, Raiden continues to work with a private military organization known as Maverick Security in Africa. While on a mission with them, he is attacked by enemy cyborgs from Desperado Enterprises, and barely survives. As he works to defeat the terrorists group throughout the game, his personality becomes darker and more conflicted resulting in a change in his appearance. Although some games coming out in 2013 are towards the end of the year, it’s not so with this one as it is out in February.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will release for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on February 19.

SimCity

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen an update to this Maxis classic and that’s one reason why it’s made it to our top five games in 2013 list. This new version will feature high definition 3-D graphics and run on the brand-new new GlassBox engine, and will offer long-awaited features such as multiplayer. Players will be able to create unique cities within their friends’ regions for the first time. Additionally, the city is full of each other in ways previously ignored by the game. For example, players can choose to create a specialized city that Sims from around the region may want to vacation in. Sims may also live in one city and work in another. While this city-building simulation may seem like it has been too-long coming to be popular, the game was enormously popular in the early 2000′s. Thanks to the continued popularity of EA’s The Sims series, fans have never really forgotten this classic simulation. I for one, am looking forward to sharing this game, not only with my friends, but with my children as well.

SimCity will release for PCs and Macs on March 5.

Tomb Raider

This reboot from Square Enix has been developed by Crystal Dynamics and finally reveals the origin story of the iconic character Lara Croft. Over the course of this game, players will Laura’s transformation from a frightened young woman to a hard-core survivor. After being stranded on a tropical island in the Dragon’ s Triangle Laura must learn how to fend for herself by finding food and water, as well as fighting off wild animals and malevolent mercenaries who wish to kill her and the other survivors. This action-adventure survival game will feature an open world, multiple side quests, and a 12 to 15 hour storyline. Fans of the series have looked forward to this release since it was announced in November 2010. The new Tomb Raider will be the first game in the series to receive an ESRB rating of M in the United States. This is another one of the games coming out in 2013 that we won’t have too long to wait for since it will be released on March 5th.

Tomb Raider will release for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on March 5.

Watch Dogs

While it doesn’t yet have a confirmed 2013 release date, this open-world action adventure game from Ubisoft is highly anticipated throughout the gaming community. The announcement at last year’s E3 conference was met with great enthusiasm by gamers both at the conference and across the Internet. Gameplay in Watch Dogs will center around the main character’s ability as a hacker. Players will be able to hack electronic systems in order to control or obtain vital information. Furthermore, Ubisoft has stated that all of the technology present in the game either exists in the real world, or is currently in development. Furthermore, the methods used within the game are plausible in the real world.

This game is coming out in 2013, but it currently does not have an exact release date. This is because it is expected to debut on Sony and Microsoft’s new consoles, which will most likely be announced at this year’s E3.

While there are other games in 2013 that I’m looking forward to playing, these are my top five so far. As something of an old-school gamer, I’m looking forward to experiencing your take on some classic series, as well as a new title that aspires to take gamers to a new place this year. Leave me a comment, and let me know what games you’re most looking forward to in 2013.
