The High Tech Society’s Tech News Recap
January 26th – February 1st 2013
This past week has been a little quiet in the tech news arena, but we still have some great information to share with you. This week’s tech news recap will touch on information related to the ARGUS Drone, Twitter’s attempt to hide pornography on their Vine app, upcoming game releases for February, about the amount of Facebook mobile users surpasses desktop users for the first time ever, and exciting news from Nintendo UK. So, get a cup of coffee and get comfortable as we take you through the highlights of this weeks news in technology.
The ARGUS Drone Comes to Life
If you are familiar with the game Halo, then you are familiar with the ARGUS drone, if you aren’t familiar with Halo, the ARGUS drone is a flying ship equipped with the latest in spy technology that can detect, and often destroy the enemy. Now, the Defense advanced Research Projects Agency or DARPA for short, has named their new spy drone after the vehicle featured in Halo. The name ARGUS actually comes from Greek mythology and basically means a 100 eyed ‘all seeing’ god of war. DARPA’s ARGUS drone is equipped with many sensors and possibly a couple of rockets, but unlike the Halo drone, the real ARGUS is much bigger, better, and more accurate than the video game version could ever be.
Twitter Hides Porn on the Vine App
On Tuesday, Twitter started restricting how users can share sexually explicit clips on the Vine video application. This comes at a time that many users have expressed concern about adult content showing up on the app. Vine is very similar to Twitter, and users can create and search for content using hashtags.
Also on Tuesday, some hashtags that had worked previously began returning no results. These tags included terms such as nude, porn, naked, and sex. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that pornography has disappeared completely from the Vine app, but it does mean that Twitter has made a step in the right direction by making it much harder to find. February Game Releases
February is a great month if you are a gamer because there are sixteen new video games scheduled for release, and there are games coming out for every platform including: Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, PS3, Xbox 360, and much more. Some of the games we will see during the month include: Fire Emblem: Awakening, Dead Space 3, We Sing 80’s, Pro Evolution Soccer 2013, Sonic All sTars Racing Transformed, and Crysis 3. There are literally games to suit every age, genre, and taste.
Facebook Mobile Users Surpass Desktop Users
For the first time ever, the number of daily visitors to Facebook on mobile devices has been higher than the number of people visiting using computers. Facebook has stated that there are a little over 1 billion registered users in the world, with more than 600 million of them visiting the social networking platform on a daily basis, and more than 150 million of them are doing it from mobile devices instead of home computers.
Facebook has spent some time focusing on mobile users and have released many new apps and features that are specifically geared for the mobile crowd, and this policy has paid off. Currently, Facebook is the largest social networking platform in the world, and the Facebook mobile app is the most used app across both Android and iOS devices in the United States during 2012.
